I ate at the Friendly's in Fall River a few weeks ago. They are always pretty busy. It's decent food for the price.
I really, really, REALLY wanted to buy my local pub when it went up for sale. However, I didn't even need to see the books. Tourism in town is down and just by judging from going to many places, people in the place plunking down cash is way, way down. Sure, the time to buy is now if you can take losses for a few years and maybe, sometime in the future you'll see profitability. Just too risky unless you know enough people to guarantee asses in the seats pounding down beers and burgers. It can be done, and is being done, but the article points out the real problem, far too many seats compared to the number of paying customers. Everyone is fighting over the same customers and cutting their prices to do so.
Buffalo Wild wings really seemed to have it going on last I saw one in 2006. Great concept. No idea how they're doing now. It's sad that just about every industry experienced this idea that you could expand so large that profits would always go up. The housing boom and perceived wealth factor has really f*cked this economy in more ways than we know.

Your decor sucks and smells like Grandma's house and your bacteria infested food is going to kill someone one day.
/Make a me a good tasting meal that didn't come out of an old bag in the freezer and I'm happy. Oh and good service too.

After the novelty of a new chain restaurant wears off, customers eventually realize they can get
fresh
food for the same price -- sometimes for less.

Some of these restaurants are so similar you could probably bring in the menu from one to another restaurant and order from it with few problems.

Since everything they serve comes from Sisco or Sam's Club, their menus are unique like everyone else's.

So long as these are chain restaurants and not franchises the reason they are so hard to kill off is that the profits from the successful locations support and prop up the others. If we really want to kill them off all we have to do is tell their client base they are supporting socialism.

So, restaurants barely scraping by, but keeping their owners and employees' families fed and mortgages paid is a plague that must be stopped?

I didn't think Sbarro still existed outside of I-95 rest stops.

That's entirely unfair. I've seen them at the mall once or twice.

That is what I took from it too. Underperforming restaurants that are just covering the costs that they generate...in this economic climate that seems like a good thing. Sure if their owner's aren't employees maybe that guy would be pissed, but its a huge ass shiatstorm economy right now. Ride it out a few years and hopefully everything will be gravy again.
