Hmm, not one comment above is positive towards Ben Nelson, which probably means he is one of the best US Senators.

This is why I chuckle when talking heads on conservative radio shows talk about Obama's "super-majority that gave him everything he wanted for two years!!"

Nelson and Lieberman took turns whoring out their 59th and 60th cloture votes during health care negotiations and demonstrably weakened the final bill in the process.

The only bad part is that both of those guys are 100% for sale until the next session begins - Lieberman would occasionally vote like a human being at least.

Let's see how many confirmations they help the Republicans hold up for the next year.

Most conservative types see the writing on the wall: the public is pissed, and it's now time to take a lobbyist position or face heavy scrutiny. And that on top of dealing with the Teabagger House just means that the cherry ride is over.

2011-12-27 08:23:39 PM
And once's he's replaced with a Republican, the senate will have a slight idealogical shift to the left.

And had they been actual Republicans, no health care bill would have passed whatsoever. As little as you may like Obamacare, it's a big improvement over Nixoncare, which is what he had before.

Conservative Democrats can be reasoned with. Republicans are too caught up in frothing santorum over Obama's birth certificate to be amenable to reason.

Shh, this is fark. You need to not bring logic to arguments. I love how 90% of the posters here biatch (with good reason) that the GOP is too doctrainaire and won't look at things like raising taxes one iota as an option, but then also biatch if the Democrat in question doesn't believe in everything they hold dear. See Ron Wyden and his recent working with Paul Ryan on a solution to medicare as a great example of this.

Wasn't Medicare before "Nixoncare"? (whatever that is - HMOs I suppose)

That seems like a step backwards to me.

Checking out "On the Issues", it appears he voted with the Democrats over 70% of the time. When it comes to the Senate, beggars can't be choosers...Votes are just too hard to come by.

The vast majority of votes in the senate and house are non-objectionable measures like "let's name a post office after Jesus and puppies".

Brass-tax votes are the real key young squire. Ben Nelson was a whore's whore when it came to votes of consequence.

Here's the party averages by the site:

Overall, Democrats voted with their party 88.4% of the time, and Republicans voted with their party 81.7% of the time (votes Jan. 8 through Sept. 8, 2007).

Ben Nelson personally: Voted with Democratic Party 77.8% of 325 votes. (Sep 2007)

not bloody likely, though it takes balls to vote for Obamacare with that constituency, DINO or not. He must have known his political career was over.

He voted for the original Affordable Care Act, which as I remember included funding specific to Nebraska (you may remember this as the "cornhusker kickback). The amended version, which is what became the actual law and removed that funding, he voted against.

I damn sure remember it. Every damn commercial break has a political ad blackballing him for that. Never mind the fact that the 'Kickback' would've given our state more delicious government cheese, and, in turn, benefit the local economy. Health care reform, and more federal funds? I am A-OK with that.

The roll call on H.R. 3590 has him listed as a "yea" vote. The reconciliation bill in 2010 removed the "kickback", but, since reconciliation bills cannot be filibustered, his "nay" vote didn't matter. Seems rather petty to be mad about it now; he was the deciding vote that brought us Obamacare. If he had been a Republican, it never would have passed.

Uh. No? The version of the bill that passed, passed with him voting no. The house only agreed to pass the senate version because the senate agreed to amend the bill, including the removal of Nelson's deal. When that revised bill came up for the vote, he voted against it. The bill passed without his vote.

I wonder how this tips the overall senate projections for 2012.

Unless a lot of Dem senators ride Obama's coat-tails into office like they did in 2008, the Dems could lose the senate if they aren't careful.

Of course, if the Repubs keep farking the dog the way they have, they could end up with under 40 seats and lose their ability to filadelphia-buster

2011-12-27 11:15:19 PM
Of course this Nelson jagoff was basically a Republican anyway, and I just don't see how the religious freaks in Nebraska would ever replace him with a Democrat. This just officially makes it a GOP seat

My guess is that it will be about the same proportions in the House, and the Senate will belong to Mitch McTurtle and his screenwriter Frank Luntz.

And, unlike the Republicans, the Democrats will actually negotiate in good faith (only to be ripped off as always) and decline to abuse their procedural privileges in the way the Republicans have set unprecedented records doing the last few years.

Obama will be powerless to do anything but veto the absolute worst the evil f*ckers who control the GOP try to do but he can't just veto everything or the 99% seriously suffer. It's going to be goddam ugly.

Of course, if the Repubs keep farking the dog the way they have, they could end up with under 40 seats and lose their ability to filadelphia-buster

Absolutely zero chance of that, I'm afraid, thanks in part to leftards cutting off their noses to spite their faces.

moops: Good riddance to another DINO

I don't understand the hate. He was the swing vote for Obamacare. Granted it took the bribe of the Cornhusker Kickback to buy his vote, but still he dragged its rapidly decaying, fetid carcass across the finish line. That should count for something.

I thought you had to bribe them to vote for sane positions.

Also, didn't he try and tack some new anti-woman amentment onto health care reform? fark him.
