I've often wondered if Stalin had not gotten in power, would the US perceived the Soviets as enemies? Stalins paranoia forced the USSR into the cold War. It wasn't until a soviet spy ring was busted in Canada did the US shifted into cold war overdrive.

After that, the Soviets had wasted their resourses on the cold war. They were honestly fearful of the USA.
