We're told cops recovered a bottle of antifreeze and Gatorade in the hotel room ... and it's likely his death was due to consumption of the toxic chemical.

Hell. i knew Gatorade was little more than sugar water, but to call it a toxic chemical really puts it out there.

I always thought the SNL curse was making lame movies based on SNL skits that are marginally funny in 5-10 minute doses.

On that note, does anyone remember that old Belushi SNL bit where he played an older version of himself, sitting in a cemetery with headstones of his SNL colleagues, saying he outlived them all - yet ironically, he was the first of them to die?

2011-12-27 03:00:07 PM
I thought the SNL curse was when people who excel on the show think they have a solo career and fail miserably when they try to get movies or TV shows made.

Maybe I'm thinking of MadTV.

proteon: ...the booze will kill you, soul first.

No kidding. I know I'm mostly preaching to the choir by saying this, but weed doesn't seem to inflict a fraction of the damage that alcohol does. Not to say that smoking too much weed can't screw up your life - it certainly can - but the damage from weed isn't nearly as tragic as the damage from alcohol as far as I've seen. I'm not advocating making alcohol illegal or anything, but if weed were legal and widely available, perhaps it would be a less harmful substitute for people who like to get high.

2011-12-27 03:40:50 PM
He must have been using the antifreeze to mask the taste of the gatorade. Surprised this doesn't happen more often.

I also heard that a guy who worked at the grocery store where a retired stagehand who used to work for SNL in the 80's shopped died of a drug overdose recently! Damn SNL curse!

/I thought that the SNL curse was that people started to believe that a funny comedy sketch was just a weird character talking fast and repeating themselves with no ending.

There have been over a hundred cast members since 1975. Of them, these are the dead ones

John Belushi
Gilda Radner
Chris Farley
Danitra Vance
Phil Hartman
Michael O'Donoghue
Charles Rocket

With respect, Subby, that's not a curse. That's actually a pretty good batting average.

Dead CAREERS on the other hand, would include:

Victoria Jackson
Garrett Morris
Larraine Newman
Jane Curtin
Terry Sweeney
Joe Piscopo
Victoria Jackson
Jenny Slate
Cheri Oteri
Gail Matthius
Gary Kroeger
Chris Kattan
Ellen Kleghorne
Denny Dillon
Victoria Jackson

...and dozens more

/Mike Myers doesn't count - that guy's sitting on enough bank that he doesn't need to work - and The Love Guru shows why
//Jon Lovitz doesn't count - he's a pretty successful businessman and club owner
///Nancy Walls has all of Steve Carell's money
////Seriously, screw Victoria Jackson in her unfunny anus

while, by and large, I can't disagree with most of your posting, I don't know that Jane Curtin belongs on the "dead career" list...after SNL, she had a couple of decent sitcoms (Kate and Allie - 5 seasons, 3rd Rock - 5 seasons) plus at least moderate "working actor" jobs in movies and TV.....

/not sure why I'm white knighting her, the ignorant slut

YouTube is blocked here at work, so I hadn't checked out the link. But thanks, now I remember what that skit was called.

On that note, it wasn't exactly a link, since all you did was copy and paste it into your post, genius. See those buttons above the comment box that look like figure eights lying on their side? To say there is such a thing as a curse is its own level of retarded. To flag a suicide in as part of a curse is double retarded. In the HuffPo article, the guy had mentioned the pain of life and his perpetual battle with alcohol in recent online posts. Neither of which are part of some vague curse some idiots like subby try to put forward.

Very possible, but too soon to tell, in my opinion. The 90's SNL women? Sure. It's been a decade and they don't have work. But she's been off the show for a year.

And, I mean, she's the voice of Marcel the Shell, who I can't stop f*cking (oops) hearing about, so there's that.

2011-12-27 04:58:12 PM
Why is everyone focusing on his work for one very crappy year of SNL instead of giving him credit for his work producing Kids in the Hall???

I wouldn't say all of these people have dead careers. Jenny Slate is young and I think I know her more for Marcel the Shell than SNL. I've heard her interviewed and I get the impression she's as interested in writing as she is in performing. Garrett Morris always seems to pop up on tv somewhere, usually on sit-coms I don't like, but at least he's worked pretty steadily for well over 30 years now. Same with Chris Kattan although he is younger. Jane Curtain has done a lot of television since she left SNL and I would assume she's reached an age where retirement is an option.

People get older and closer to retirement. Some performers gravitate toward things that don't get as many headlines.

There absolutely is. The curse normally manifests itself as career suicide rather than regular suicide.

Ethylene glycol poisoning, not a peaceful, painless way to go.

/Though, the treatment is Fark-approved: keeping the patient drunk with intravenous alcohol for days.
