I lurked. Then I said something funny once and got sponsored for TF. I paid for a couple of months after that trying to get into it. But in the end, I find that being a liter is an excellent filter against the otherwise crapflood of stupid and/or redundant threads.

2011-12-27 01:37:37 PM
I also am one of those people that sometimes have to explain to my co-workers what the hell is so funny on the internet.

Go ahead I dare you to smart this!!

I also forgot to add that when I do comment, it always is on a thread that is a day old or dead...

envirovore: dhambrick: inkydoo: Been lurking since 2005. Finally accepted defeat and created an account yesterday. Next step, TF.

Why?

No really, why?

I did the same thing. Have been visiting this site since 2001/2002, reading articles and comment threads and never bothered registering until earlier this year.

Why? Because I already spent enough time on the site and figured registering would eat even more time up. Finally took the plunge anyway, as there have been many threads I wanted to participate in.

I still tend to lurk more often than contribute though. Usually because anything I wanted to say has already been said, or I just have nothing really of importance (or wit) to contribute.

//goes back to lurking this thread

sounds just like me, except this is my second account. registered a long time ago, mostly lurked, forgot my info, re-registered, and now mostly just lurk with this one.

I've been coming to fark for so long I forget how I ever found it, yet this comment probably makes my total less than fifteen.

Ok I'm finally outing myself as a longtime lurker. I'm so ashamed. I've been around for years but only actually registered earlier this year because I wanted to comment on something. But after all the hours that you have to wait til your account kicks in I was over it and went back to lurking. Thanks for the laughs!

I remember when pre-tabs Fark used to have better than 50% of articles go uncommented-on. Now beat it, you whippersnappers before I call the cops on ya.

It just changed yesterday. I guess it is just another fun way to give people feedback. Drew posted a thread about it on the main page yesterday.

I marked your answer as smart. Mainly because I found it informative, but it did not amuse me.

Hey, I participate sometimes.

2011-12-27 03:20:12 PM
Jim DiGriz: Lurker: Someone who never (or almost never) posts in a thread. If a post is made, they generally do not reply to any responses. May occasionally be trolled into making two or more posts in a single thread, but generally this doesn't happen.

Para-Lurker: Someone who will post in threads occasionally, if they feel they have something to add to the conversation. Can be drawn out via trolling more often than a true Lurker.

Pseudo-Lurker: Can often be seen making "drive by" posts in multiple threads. Will occasionally have something insightful to say, but often just throws out a joke or one-liner which often has an extremely tenuous connection to what is being discussed. Pseudo-Lurkers can sometimes be trolls, although they normally don't respond to replies to their trolling, as they have moved on to other threads or sites.

From this point, we get to the regular posters, which is another area of study, too involved for the presentation presented here.

I better stop now then. I dont want to lose status in the Lurker community. But I am with the I show up ts already been said and Im reduced to the "This " comment .

However its nice to know that also means that I am not contributing to any internet drama either.

It is nice to know you are not the only on who
thinks a certain way. I read a post and want to
comment, then I scroll down a little and see
someone else has it covered, so all I can do is
lurk or say "THIS", and do we really want a
whole thread where every other comment is

Yes. This is fark, we will argue for beer but never need someone to defend a beer type.

I must say, in my many years of lurking here, you people have brightened more than a few lousy days. You've also caused me to get quite a few strange looks from coworkers. A couple of you magnificent bastards even owe me new keyboards. Take a bow, funny folk, and realize that even if we lurkers aren't speaking up - your wit and snark aren't going unheard. I'll now return you to your regularly scheduled snark-athon.

In debate threads a lot of the time it's said in better words as well. Fark threads have such a brief window of activity and in between the whargarbl the concise stuff gets posted pretty rapidly off the cuff (if it is all off the cuff, sometimes I suspect it isn't).
