I lurked. Then I said something funny once and got sponsored for TF. I paid for a couple of months after that trying to get into it. But in the end, I find that being a liter is an excellent filter against the otherwise crapflood of stupid and/or redundant threads.

I also am one of those people that sometimes have to explain to my co-workers what the hell is so funny on the internet.

I did the same thing. Have been visiting this site since 2001/2002, reading articles and comment threads and never bothered registering until earlier this year.

Why? Because I already spent enough time on the site and figured registering would eat even more time up. Finally took the plunge anyway, as there have been many threads I wanted to participate in.

I still tend to lurk more often than contribute though. Usually because anything I wanted to say has already been said, or I just have nothing really of importance (or wit) to contribute.

Jim DiGriz: Lurker: Someone who never (or almost never) posts in a thread. If a post is made, they generally do not reply to any responses. May occasionally be trolled into making two or more posts in a single thread, but generally this doesn't happen.

Para-Lurker: Someone who will post in threads occasionally, if they feel they have something to add to the conversation. Can be drawn out via trolling more often than a true Lurker.

Pseudo-Lurker: Can often be seen making "drive by" posts in multiple threads. Will occasionally have something insightful to say, but often just throws out a joke or one-liner which often has an extremely tenuous connection to what is being discussed. In debate threads a lot of the time it's said in better words as well. Fark threads have such a brief window of activity and in between the whargarbl the concise stuff gets posted pretty rapidly off the cuff (if it is all off the cuff, sometimes I suspect it isn't).
