Useless without picture of billboard.

Useless because Durham's gang-member population cannot read.

That probably applies to half the Duke basketball team, too.

Won't THEY be embarrassed when the sparkler-lit flaming confetti ignites the hair gel of the dancers

Going bowling and then having a New Year's Eve fire in the back yard with friends and family.

I'm a big fan of keeping the guns in the safe when I'm getting loaded, myself.

I figure that Fayetteville would have bought all of Durham's anti-gun warning signs. I'd rather sleep on the streets in Durham than drive through Fayettenam.

/safe in the Raleigh suburbs

Once again, the L.A.P.D. is asking Los Angelenos not to fire their guns at the visitor spacecraft.

Why is there no Spanish translation. This seems to be one of the more acceptable places to use it.

I'm sure the noble residents of NC will gladly comply.

I'm more shocked the "You don't need God to hope/care/live/love" billboard is still alive and well here.

That snarky photo would be somewhat funny if your generalization didn't prove you knew absolutely nothing about Durham.

I would rather walk the streets of Durham than the streets of Raleigh. Both are safe but less crime in Durham. Better food too.

I used to have to sleep in the basement when I lived on the border of Detroit and GPP. New year's eve sounded like I was living next to Fallujah. Conversely when I lived in downtown Raleigh I was never nervous. Downtown Durham is getting nicer but I much prefer Raleigh - in fact the one thing I miss the most about living on the west coast is eating kibbeh nayeh @ Sitti in downtown Raleigh.

/and Jet's pizza - they just opened one in north Raleigh and I'm pissed I moved before it opened!

You better check out the crime statistics from the local counties. Durham is twice as high as any other local county; and The City of Durham is three times the rate of Durham County as a whole.

Crimes per 100,000 residents and change from 2009* (local Counties - Raleigh is in Wake)
Chatham: 2,228.4; -3.3 percent
Durham: 5,582.5; -5.4 percent
Franklin: 2,548.6; -0.2 percent
Johnston: 2,935.2; -7.4 percent
Orange: 2,975.7; -5.2 percent
Wake: 2,836.6; -6.6 percent

Here are some links:

Durham County crime rate is 6th-highest in state
(new window)

Durham still leader in local crime (new window) (article has stats to the right)

I lived just north of downtown Durham for the last thirteen years. The worst crime I ever witnessed was the building of the DPAC- that thing is an ugly piece of shiat. Personally, I LOVED Durham's bad reputation; it kept the ignorant northeastern honkeys buying in Holly Springs and me from having to hear how they did things right in Paramus ever time I wanted a slice of pizza.

And that Duke meme just never gets old, does it? Wasn't funny the first time it was used, isn't funny now.

Oh a Duke art student drew the billboard. He left out fun things to do on NYE is to call an African American escort becuase you cannot get dates, or Duke coeds look like 40 yo soccer Moms. BTW Duke sucks.

2011-12-27 04:22:34 PM
The "Durham is safer than Raleigh," is propaganda put out by the Raleigh burbs to give people a reason to stay in Durham.

2011-12-27 07:05:43 PM
Haven't seen it, but then my neighbors don't tend to shoot.

/Live north of Raleigh
//Tend to avoid Durham (mostly because it's far away and the traffic sucks)

2011-12-27 07:06:53 PM
On NYE there's no doubt we'll be having a few beers and shooting off the porch.

2011-12-27 10:17:59 PM
I only shoot when I return fire.

/Live in Durham.
//Schools are a bigger problem than crime.
///Go Bulls!

Shooting guns on New Year's is an old tradition... like shooting guns (and cannons) on the Fourth. Who are all of you sheltered people? I get the safety aspect, what goes up, must come down, but not the 'only such and such shoot guns on New Years'.

Just how many generations removed from the soil are some folks, here?

2011-12-28 11:08:00 AM
Durham didn't make the list of the Top 100 most dangerous cities in the US (with population above 25,000). Actually none from NC.

2011-12-28 12:37:30 PM
OK, anyone know where the sign is?

(Apex resident here...)

Godzilla

I'm not certain but it looks like (from the picture earlier in the thread) that it might be where Alston Ave crosses the Durham Freeway. The billboard would be facing north / the camera is looking south.
