Honestly, you could stick a $20 glass vase from Pier 1 up there, and no one would know the difference.

So, Texas, was your little unpopular LHN worth running off a team that has eight bowl appearances in the last nine years?

I bet carolina players would know the difference, if they could win a trophy in football they would just sell it to make a few dollars, or maybe give it to a tutor to take a test for them.

I think that is exactly what the "replacement" trophy was.

Is anyone really proud of winning something called the Advocare V100 Independence Bowl? Or the Little Caesar's Pizza Bowl? Or the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl? I mean, do players proudly wear rings when they finish 7-6 and win a third-tier bowl game aired in the middle of a weekday afternoon?

Not to mention one of the winningest programs of all-time (Nebraska), Colorado (a respectable program until the last 6-7 years or so) and Texas A&M. All for a network no one can watch anyway. I'm sure breaking up the Big XII was worth it so the LHN could air that Texas vs. Rice game everyone was dying to see.

Besides, Colorado is juco territory now, and the Cornhuskers can blow a goat.

No, it wasn't all about the LHN, but the LHN is an effective symbol for the bullshiat within and outside of the Big XII that caused all of this to happen.

Dude. Any team with a 6-6 record in a BCS conference is going to get a bowl bid.

The independence bowl is a really big deal, too because unc is such a powerhouse. *yawn*

I don't know about these major trophies for major sports games, but I once delivered to a place that made such stuff and was very disappointed.

All forms of trophies were gold colored metal, usually steel and plated with something like bronze. Some were full form human figures made apparently in cast iron -- because I examined one once that fell and an extended hand snapped off.

The trophy-maker assembled trophies kind of like a puzzle, selecting precut blocks of stained and polished wood with holes already cut in them into which steel rods went with threads on each end. Assorted small ornaments were screwed into drilled holes as needed.

He had an assortment of fancy metal acid etched or engraved plaques that he glued or screwed onto each base. Specialty items required he use an engraving set to engrave the plaques -- using what I believe is called a pantograph. It's a device of assorted 'arms' that one end traces a pattern while the other end cuts into the metal. It can be adjusted to increase or decrease the size of the traced engraving.

Pretty much, it could take him maybe 30 minutes to assemble a basic trophy, which looked impressive and cost, IMO, too much.

He could whip out a bunch of those small little cups for 'best husband' 'first place' and stuff that today you buy at a department store for about a buck each. Only, his were made of metal and real wood.

Now, his skill came into repairing broken trophies, some of which he had to send out to be re-cast and replated. Often he could solder a broken off part back in place, polish up the joint and apply a special paint to match the original plating.

For really special jobs, he had blocks of rare woods, like Mahogany, Teak and Chestnut.

Some parts he would order in special and those cost quite a bit. Like a crystal globe.

His sales, at the time, were mainly for the much cheaper bowling, basketball, baseball and football trophies. (Especially the bowling trophies.)

I left the place a bit disappointed. I'd always expected that the trophies people fought so hard to get would be made from higher quality stuff. Like those sports figures atop some should have been plated with real gold or silver. Maybe the cap piece -- the figurine on top -- should have been carefully screwed into the base and not just threaded on a basic, small diameter iron pipe.

I have a golden glove from my late father, who was a boxer at one time. It's small, of course, but he worked hard to get it. It feels like gold. It weighs like gold. I've speculated on getting it tested to see if it is real gold or even gold plate.

I never do. He stopped boxing after WW2. He was proud of the glove. (While at sea in the Navy, he was asked by the captain of his ship to knock out a sailor who had gone crazy and wild but not to hurt him. So, he did it, quickly and as requested.)

Maybe I don't want to find out if it's real gold or just bronze or brass plated. He trained real hard to get it.

Either way, I keep it locked up.

CU will be good again eventually and Nebraska is pretty much meh with their highest finish being #14 in the last ten years. Still, nice going TEXAS.

It more or less is.

I mean, Oklahoma got a big ego too, but Texas came in to a system that wasn't theirs and stole everything. The headquarters and championship used to be in KC. Moving the championship to Jerryworld made some sense, but the headquarters? Nah.

They're consistently overrated, their uniforms are ugly, and didn't pay their cultural dues to the conference. Even Oklahoma thought Longhorns fans were a bunch of spoiled brats years before this whole thing went down. Now humble Missouri is getting to play in the better conference while Texas has to make due with playing in a collapsing conference because no one will take them. When the Big XII finally does implode, I bet Kansas, K-State, and ISU get a conference before Texas. The money won't matter... the respect will, and Texas has never respected anyone.

Texas had a huge part, but so did Nebraska and Oklahoma and the nuclear meltdown that is Texas A&M right now. Texas gets most of the blame just because Dodds is a jackass, and kills any sympathy for the program. It boils down to Nebraska wanting to ursurp Mizzou from getting into the BIG10, Oklahoma wanting to be top dog and get the same respect as Texas, and A&M not going to the SEC when they should of, and completely pissing off their entire fanbase and alumni.

Part of me blames Nebraska for what they did, but part of me doesn't. They weren't doing what they used to do (dominate) when they left the conference, but when they did, they never had the same pull Texas got. A lot of it goes back to the "cultural" dues I was talking about. Nebraska didn't just show up in the Big XII like Texas did and steal the show, they were in the polls for 40 some odd years. Again, they paid their dues up in the north.

Oklahoma probably deserves more respect than Texas. Again, dues. Oklahoma was there before Texas, so they get some more leeway. When you've been good in the conference (and the Big 8) for as long as they have been, you get to demand things. Maybe they got a little greedy here of late, but not our problem anymore.

A&M is a microcosm of its own. A weird, sexual innuendo-abbreviated microcosm.

I don't really care that we didn't get into the B1G. Mizzou will increase its success either way. It's not going to be overnight like some of my fellow students think, but give it a decade. Florida is warmer anyways.

Pretty much, yes. The bloc of Texas, A&M, Oklahoma and Nebraska for years prevented any progress on equal revenue sharing and a conference network. Nebraska stewed for 17 years because Texas dominated the conference instead of Nebraska, but Nebraska was never willing to side with the lesser members of the conference on those two key issues. After years of blocking equal revenue sharing and a conference network, they jumped ship to a conference with equal revenue sharing and a conference network. A&M did basically the same thing, albeit given a presumed future SEC Network. Oklahoma kicked the Big 8 schools to the curb when Texas joined, consistently siding with Texas on pretty much every issue. It was only when the Texas declared that some pigs are more equal to others that Oklahoma decided they were going to trade up by joining the PAC. When that blew up in their faces, they started promoting equal revenue sharing as if they've always supported it. Alas, in getting their dicks slammed in the door, they gave Missouri and the SEC the political and legal cover they needed to talk to each other.
