I really hate how the media thinks "hack" means "Do a cool new trick not many people know about!"

This isn't a hack. This is a new feature built into Facebook chat.

Now, if they told us how to log onto our friends accounts and see all their private messages and photos they sent to people, then that would be closer to a "hack" than this article.

Is there where all the "high-tech" tricks our grandmothers learn years late about the internet come from? Is it CNN's fault?

I voted for both on yours. Cause it's funny and you are smart...

In that case you should be reading 2600, not CNN.com.

This is the same media that thinks Grand Theft Auto causes school shootings, gives more airtime to Casey Anthony than a helicopter full of soldiers and Navy Seals getting shot down, and invented words like "sexting" and "cyberbullying", so I wouldn't count on them to be intelligent enough to tell the difference between a hack and a feature.

Interesting way the author "watermarked" the document.

Mashable -> geekosystem -> CNN.com

while I think they're pretty self-explanatory, some people may just need to be led along like children.

Fark Blog explaining Smart/Funny buttons. (new window) Surprise, it's a new feature that many people, apparently, have asked for.

They should have added a Troll button as well.

I don't have as much a problem with this usage. Hack can also be used as a colloquial term for getting something to work, but in a sloppy and inelegant manner.

What do you think this is, Slashdot?

I am reasonably certain I don't need a new way to have any awkward, anti-social conversations. I could give lessons on it, though I wouldn't feel very comfortable in doing so.

It's just like when "Xerox" and "Google" became verbs rather than companies. The more a word is used the more likely it is to mutate. Just gotta deal with that shiat! I guess "hack" now means a cool, little trick.

Elephantman: They should have added a Troll button as well.

1. It's the far right button after the date of the comment.
2. Until we agree that "troll" means "This person is making an intentionally absurd statement to get a reaction" instead of "This person is wrong and holds a different opinion of my own" then "troll" is about as meaningful as "hack" is in TFA.

CNN has sunk pretty farking low.. Not only is this `feature' farking retarded it's not even worthy of a blog spot on tumblr.. Yet, CNN steps up to the plate for no apparent reason.

Actually the term "hack" comes from the concept of capability, not underhandedness. For example, "Bob went was drafted into the Major League, but couldn't hack it."

Facebook chat is the worse, either it doesn't work or delays in getting messages or they don't show up in chat but do show up in the messages and I have to refresh constantly.

Total crap.

Technology-wise, it originally meant a clever and elegant solution to a problem, sometimes achieved through brute force.

As opposed to nancy grace and all the hacks on cnn, msnbc, cbs, nbc, abc, and all the local reporters jamming a microphone in someone's face?

stop your petty bullshiat and get a real life instead of blaming your petty problems on everyone else.
