The article has to be wrong. If he got on a train for New Orleans, from DC and Charlotte was a stop...that train stops in Birmingham. It's called the Crescent and it runs daily from NY to NO. The only possible explanation would be that he mistakenly got on the Carolinian which runs from NY to Charlotte daily. And that could make sense because provided the Carolinian was running on time, it rarely does, that would have given him a 6-7 hour layover in Charlotte.
