Last time I had McDonald's in Chile, you could get cheese empanadas instead of fries with your value meal. Good for Bolivia, though. I really like their sense of indigenous autonomy, which includes not eating poisoned gringo food.

It scares me a little the first Ronald that came to mind was Reagan which lead me to remember this...(looked it up to get the wording just right)

"Well, I learned a lot....I went down to (Latin America) to find out from them and (learn) their views. You'd be surprised. They're all individual countries."

/biz thread so I'll stop typing with that.

Ronald, the next time I say, 'Let's go someplace like Bolivia,' let's go someplace LIKE Bolivia.

Reminds me that not too long ago (November 4th) some animal rights activist smokebombed a Burger King in La Paz.

This, basically. Guess Bolivia realized McDonald's is one of the few fast food chains still pushing trans fats.

As McDonald's hacked and hewed at the rainforest for soy production, an untold multitude of amphibian, plant and bird species vanished into the scorching sun of history. With them went some of the last uncontacted tribes on Earth, peoples who maintain the delicate ecology of the Amazon and are an indicator for forest health.

Sorry, I'm skeptical. I don't buy that 'uncontacted tribes' maintain the ecology of the Amazon and are any sort of indicator for forest health. I somehow suspect that the forest did just fine before those tribes came along.

I read that as more live within the ecology than fight it, burn it down and plant stuff no-one needs. but Uncontacted is probably a lie.

The biggest mistake McDonalds ever made was going for "value" over quality. In the long run, it will be their downfall, and I suspect I'll see the end of the company within my lifetime.

Not unless you plan to be several hundred years old. McDonald's is doing as well as they have been in years and, despite the douchbaggery of some folks, McD's has a place in our society. Nobody is forced to eat there.

Back to the article - it looks like someone used an online thesaurus to write the article. Probably was wiping back spittle and tears as he was furiously typing away.

I'm going for a two cheeseburgers meal with a fry and Coke Zero for lunch tomorrow to celebrate. The Bolivians can keep their cocaine.

It's funny cause your namesake cried when all the trees in the Shire were cut down.

It's also funny cause you don't know what the word "indicator" means. Guess Bilbo forgot to teach you that one. What is meant here is that if uncontacted (meaning not regularly contacted) people are living the way they always have, then loggers and cattle ranchers or whoever haven't moved in and set up shop and started killing them. I don't see how it is a stretch to assume that native hunter/gatherers doing ok is a sign that the rainforest is relatively unmolested.

As for McDonalds, I can't say anything about the food itself, but in Montevideo they serve some damn good coffee/espresso.

A simpler way would be to ask the question: 'are the trees still standing?'

How do you measure the health of a forest that doesn't happen to have a tribe living in it?

In McDonalds Peri, you can get delicious yellow chili sauce instead of mustard. It's all kinds of awesome.

Why was I at McD's when I was on that culinary heaven called Perú? Saving $$$ :(

The funny thing is that the most likely reason for McD's not working in Bolivia is that it is too expensive for the locals. Where McD's in USA is the cheapest thing you can get, in South America it's FAR from it.

I think if you have strong personal feelings about how a large multinational corporation like McDonald is doing in a country 99% of people will never even visit is some what sad and pathetic.

That goes for both the white knights and haters in this thread.

Probably because they can't afford it.

Article writer is a hysterical Nancy. McDonald's had eight restaurants in Boliva. There are more than eight McDonald's in every suburb in America. Progress cannot be stopped.

I ate at a McD's in Japan because I'd just got off the plane, I was farking exhausted, it was close to the hotel, and I just wanted something q&d before I crashed. Sad thing is it tasted much better in Japan than any McD's in the US. And I just had nuggets and fries.
