No, Subby, you have it mixed up. It's Simon Cowell that's Jesus. Obama is just one of Santa's reindeer.

No, no, no. Everyone knows whose birthday is celebrated on Christmas.

\also my aunt - she was a Christmas Carol

I'm sorry - celebrating Christmas on Dec 25th has very little to do with Jesus.

It wasn't until A.D. 440 that the church officially proclaimed December 25 as the birth of Christ. This was not based on any religious evidence but on a pagan feast. Saturnalia was a tradition inherited by the Roman pagans from an earlier Babylonian priesthood. December 25 was used as a celebration of the birthday of the sun god. It was observed near the winter solstice.

So, basically, the church showed up and a bunch of pagans are having a big party for the winter solstice. That makes sense because, each day before the solstice (for the most part), winter gets colder and the days get shorter. But after the solstice, things get warmer and the days get longer. That's a pretty cool thing to celebrate. I'm not religious in any sense of the word but I look forward to the solstice (which was Dec. 22nd I believe).

We know Dec 25th doesn't correspond to Jesus's birth.....fine. But maybe it's still 'about' him. Right?

Compare Jesus to Santa.
http://www.google.com/trends?q=Jesus%2C+Santa

Santa is winning. It's not even close. Santa is more popular than Jesus. Children don't go to the mall to sit with Jesus. Children don't unwrap presents from Jesus. Only a handful of Christmas songs and traditions even mention Jesus in some round-about way.

These children who are failing to see a deep and meaningful connection between Jesus and Christmas aren't *wrong*. They're actually being quite observant.

Saying statements like this apparently make you the asshole.

While forcing your teenage daughter to carry an unwanted child ensuring she never finish high school, go to college and be a leech on society for the rest of her life all because of your belief in an invisible skyman is not.

Exactly. It's like demanding the arrest a 4 year old for child molestation after he and another 4 year old played "doctor"

I think the confusion comes from the liberals holding him up as the Messiah.

santa is the christian's ultimate scape goat....

What if we replaced santa with jesus?

We'd write letters to jesus telling him how good and faithful we'd been, and then ask jesus to reward the good and the faithful with presents...

But then those present never show

So parents have to pick up the slack and go out and buy present for the kids, just like they do with santa

And the little children are happy and they LOVE jesus, cause you know, he brings the good and the faithful presents

Then one day, the little children sneak into the living room hoping to catch jesus putting presents under the dogwood tree (you know, cause jesus died on dogwood and not pine) and they find mommy and daddy wrapping presents...

now mommy and daddy have some explaining to do...

When it's santa, it's easy to explain: "Santa doesn't exist, it's just this story we tell..."

Not so easy when it's Jesus... Kids start questioning faith, questioning religion... doubting jesus is real... even if you some how are able to explain it in a way they understand, they will go through their whole life doubting... that's not real good for the church...

I find that difficult to believe considering that my parents' generation learned Latin starting in middle school and had to get through Calculus to get a public high school diploma.

agreed... when i was in school, teachers and principals didn't cheat tests so they could make federal funding qualifications, they would fail you and if need be held you back a grade (or in one kids case 5) until you either dropped out or got it right. They didn't have to take a funding penalty for holding kids back or failing them... now a teacher can get fired for not pushing illiterate kids through the system and causing the school admin to lose their fed bonus...

Smeggy Smurf: Study finds that kids are smartasses

Exactly.

How do people not remember doing this in high school? I can remember a half dozen or so times when my teacher would have anonymous questionnaires from some government study or think-tank for us to fill out on (usually on how much drugs and sex we were having), and every time probably half the class wrote that they had sex fifteen times a week while shooting heroin into their eyeballs.

Kids hear "anonymous study" and they think "chance to make up crap and get away with it".

For bringing us brotherly love, baptism, the rite of communion, the use of holy water, the adoration of the shepherds at our Lord's birth, the adoption of Sundays as holy days, the immortal soul, virgin birth, last judgment, and resurrection.

December 25th is your birthday, happy 3,500th birthday Mithra!

Him at His word? You do realize that nothing was written by Jesus right? It's all written by other people. So really, you are taking THEIR word for it. Not only that, but unless you've tracked down and read all the other Jesus accounts that were cut from the final draft, so by that you are also taking the Nicene Counsel's word that what they decided to publish at their word...

But i suspect this is falling on deaf eyes...

Bullshiat. Horus was the son of Osiris and Isis, depending on the myth. The most I can find is that Orisis was technically dead at the time of Horus' conception, but the Egyptians were weird that way. I don't know enough about the other mythologies, but I imagine that they are subject to the same torturous interpretations as the one I do know about. Cram that back where you got it from, your ass.

Learning a foreign language is pretty common starting in middle or elementary school. Usually it is something other than Latin, but Latin is a dead language anyway, and I know quite a few kids who are learning Chinese nowadays. Calculus is left as advanced placement, but I don't know very many people of any generation who took it before college.

The proof that kids are getting smarter is that IQ tests score have only gone up over time, known as the Flynn Effect (new window)

Yes. It does suck having to wait for you people to rewrite history. Story these days Hitler was an Atheist. In his time, he declared he was a devout Catholic and Christian, in every speech he ever made. Historical facts aren't helping you, so get to work.

Horus origin myth, from Wikipedia:

Horus was born to the goddess Isis after she retrieved all the dismembered body parts of her murdered husband Osiris, except his penis which was thrown into the Nile and eaten by a catfish,[6][7] and used her magic powers to resurrect Osiris and fashion a gold phallus[8] to conceive her son. Once Isis knew she was pregnant with Horus, she fled to the Nile Delta marshlands to hide from her brother Set who jealously killed Osiris and who she knew would want to kill their son.[9] There Isis bore a divine son, Horus.

Looks like you don't know as much about Horus as you think you do.
