Big deal.

Doctor Who show runners (formerly producers and story editors) are like the actors portraying the Doctor... they get 4 or 5 years, then it's time for the new regime.

Silvara: He says "one day", not like he's quitting tomorrow.

He's already confirmed that he's going to be doing the 50th Anniversary bit, although it's vague as to what that'll entail. Apparently it won't be a single special, but instead a multi-part thing.

You're right. Let's make this the Christmas Special thread.

It was so sappy my TV was dripping maple syrup. Predictable, trite, and kinda daft, but I enjoyed it anyway. Also, it has some bizarre canonical implications, what with this being Androzani. Last I checked, it wasn't a snowy, Christmassy wonderland. And the last time the Doctor was there, he regenerated into Colin Baker. I can't imagine him thinking it a nice place to visit.

Do you know how I know you don't know about the compensation of British TV writers?

Still, he has been burning the candles at both ends, being the show runner (head writer) for the series, and personally writing five out of this year's 14 episodes.

I absolutely loved it. I DVR'ed it last night, watched it, then watched the end of it after I finished the DVR'ed version, then woke up this morning and watched my *acquired* version. It was adorable and sweet.

Didn't they say the treas were Androzani Trees? I may be wrong (I will probably look into watching Caves of Androzani later, I knew only that there was an episode with that title - I've mostly only seen first and fourth Doctor of the old stuff), but I thought that was what they said. Of course, I presume that they can probably grow anywhere (and who knows how long they've been trying to outrun the people trying to turn them into batteries). It's the Christmas special, so I really didn't try to think too hard.

I've been enjoying a lot this couple of series, but better end it while is still (IMO) good.

What does Duke Togo have to do with this thread?

2011-12-26 01:29:30 PM
I can't say as I particularly enjoyed last night's episode... but then it was more probably because I wasn't in the right mood to watch that sort of sappy sap.

Regarding the article - I read it as Moffat doesn't want the producer job so much anymore... as the specific quote is that it's not the script writing that's the issue but all the related side projects to Doctor Who.

If at some point he steps down and just keeps doing scripts, that'd just be swell.

Except that's usually the thing producers say to take the edge off leaving the show.

But Moffatt can leave pretty happy. He's given at least three seasons, and that's not too bad for a Doctor Who producer. Stay too long and it tends to dampen the career, or leads to issues that bought forth the original cancellation in the first place. The show lasts so long because the creative team behind it changes as much as the lead.

That said, I wouldn't mind a clean sweep when Moffatt leaves. The Murray Gold music is annoying, and I'm tired of showrunners who have a sexual attraction to the Doctor. There's a certain level of detachment that makes a show work better, and that is really needed in the new series.

They were also harvesting Androzani trees. Now, it's possible that they farmed these trees on a third, unnamed world. And "Caves" took place on both Major and Minor, although the bulk of it was certainly set on Minor.

The next Dr. Who should be jewish.

2011-12-26 01:45:49 PM
I was not a big fan of the special. I did not mind the sappiness. I actually thought the idea was great, trying to deal with loss on a day that should be happy. But they ruined it in my opinion by saving the dad. It took away from the little speech the Doctor made to the mother about why the kids should be happy. Also, when did trees learn time travel technology?

The other down point to the special was the lack of the doctor doing anything. He was basically just there to run around and explain things. The companions were not that great either. The only good one was the little girl because she seemed intelligent. The boy had no idea what was going on and the mother was all over the place. And not in a way you would expect someone dealing with tragedy. The potential for the mother to return in the future is not something I am looking forward to.

The slight change in music was good. They have been running with the same background music for two years. I'm hoping they do a new score for the next season.

Moffat will not quit until he finishes the 50th anniversary special. After that, he'd probably take a break. Or maybe cut back on something else to focus on one thing. Whether that is Doctor Who, Sherlock, or another movie.

Amy and the Brigadier both told nurses to always set a place for the Doctor just in case. The look on the Doctor's face on his way into the Williams' house after that was like watching the telephone scene all over again.

Troll headline is trolling (successfully, in my case).

I watched the Christmas Special last night and I hope the Steven Moffatt/Matt Smith Who continues for a few more years (we already know their 3rd series is in the bag).

Guntram Shatterhand: The Murray Gold music is annoying

Nah, don't agree at all, he seems to have the knack for using the right kind of music for a scene, I like how he balances orchestral sounds and more electronic ones.

and I'm tired of showrunners who have a sexual attraction to the Doctor

WTF? Moffatt is all over Matt Smith? Really? Or are you projecting what RTD did with David Tennant just to make some bizarre point? I was glad the RTD/Tennant era ended, I actually was starting to root *against* the Doctor, hoping he'd quit with the damned existential whining.

Henry Holland: WTF? Moffatt is all over Matt Smith? Really?

I'm not going to say Moffat has something for Matt Smith, or the Doctor character, but one thing I'd like to see finally is the fate of the universe NOT depending upon the Doctor's love life.

I'd like a nice male companion, or an alien, or someone who doesn't totally get starry-eyed over the 'ol Doctor. Hell, I liked River up until she was all "if I kill you, I'll suffer MORE than ANYONE in the UNIVERSE EVER EVER EVER!"

/I have the same issues with the Doctor and love-interest companions as I do with Bella/Edward

I can see your point. That was one of the reasons why Donna was such a good companion. They were just best friends, and she had no sexual attraction to him whatsoever, what with being white and all.*

Amy and Rory are good that way with him. Sure, Amy wanted his schlong on the eve of her wedding after being nearly killed by the Angels, but she just wanted a schlong, it wasn't personal to the Doctor.

*Yes, Donna threw herself at Jack as well and he's white, but the statements by supposedly straight farkers who are willing to cross sides for him suggests that he's an exception.

salvador.hardin: In other news, the mirror is just awful at everything.

Bingo. It's one of the few papers which out-fails the Daily Fail.

Moffat is a self-confessed workaholic (I'll avoid mention of the Scottish national stereotype). He created Sherlock SPECIFICALLY so he'd have something to do while Doctor Who was between series (it also serves the added benefit of keeping the Who team employed year-round).

Yes, he says he'll quite one day, but that day is far off. Or he'll eventually drop dead of a heart attack while working, which isn't a bad way to go if you're doing what you love.

Personally, I would like to see him sink the movie deal, just because I think a Who movie is a bad idea.

And don't forget that he also scripted the Tintin movie, though I think his screenplay was written before he took over running Doctor Who. I'd expect him to move into making feature films when he does eventually tire of Doctor Who.
