Beveled on one end? Isn't that what a beaver does to wood when he bites it down?

How can that wood be 8,900 years old when the entire earth is only 6,000 years old??

It MUST be alien!!

I wondered if the wood is ruined or not. Old wood sells better than gold.

"Pole-shaped" = stick.

The wood is tapered and beveled on one side in a way that researchers say appears deliberate. It was found in July near the Alpena-Amberley Ridge, a now-underwater connection across Lake Huron that once linked the area of northern Michigan with Ontario.

Or a beaver chewed on it.

One time, about 15 years ago, when digging around that area in a field of virgin clay, we hit a bunch of trees and wood at about 8' down buried by glaciers right above bedrock in the bottom of the clay. I'm still fascinated by the journey that wood must have taken

In my glacial geology class in WI, we did an excavation of the Two Creeks (WI) "Buried Forest", the thick layer of trees and wood that was buried by the glaciers ~11,850 years ago. I've had a piece of that on our mantel for the last 40 years.

The layer of buried wood is so extensive that, in the late '60s/early '70, one of the paper companies tried to get permits to strip mine the area to make paper.

In the north of Finland, there are lakes that have many very well preserved logs.
The interesting part is that the lakes are north of the current tree line.

My dad found carbonized (but not fossilized) wood in Jurassic era sediment. Looks like drift wood. He turned the site over to some paleobotonists, and they got some aucaria (monkey-puzzle tree) and pararaucaria cones out of it. The pararaucaria cones are particularly interesting because they'd only been found in Argentina before (Dad's site is in eastern Oregon).
