Well, I could have sworn this is a repeat from last week and I even used it on the quiz, but now I can't find it in the archives.

"Because I ain't trying to hurt nobody. I didn't hurt anybody. It was just drugs and alcohol, that's it. I just hope that they can give me a chance to get my life back on track," he said.

Sherman said he could be facing his sixth time in jail for shoplifting and other charges and 10 to 60 years in prison.

Like those other 5 times? You want another chance? Riiiight.

I'm with you... I know I heard this story and when I saw this green I figured it was a repeat.

I could also swear that it happened like two years ago, too.

But he is sincerely sorry this time...that he got caught. Ten bucks says had he not been arrested, he would be high as a damn kite, feelin' the breeze.

I'd be more apt to believe the fellow in this arrest:

He actually turned himself in. The degenerate in TFA is just trying to weasel out.

I bet the receipt checking guy caught him.

I'm not saying it's right - but it's more reasonable that it appears at first glance. Our society tends to be significantly harsher when it comes to violent crimes. We also have stricter laws against easy targets (which is why stealing mail carries such harsh punishments). The guy that went into the bank was actively stealing from someone and while he wasn't exactly violent, he did pretend to have a weapon. Pretending to have a weapon is pretty close to actually having a weapon in the eyes of the law. There is also no mention of prior convictions - which also play a huge role in the sentencing our court system hands out.

The guy that got away with 3 billion - sure that sounds worse - but....

He wasn't the ring-leader of the operation. He was just a guy who participated in it. Other people also got sentences and some were much longer than his. He also cooperated with/provided information to allow investigators to convict the mastermind running the show who ended up with 30 years.

kid_icarus: Well at least he isn't homeless anymore.

Three meals a day, a roof over his head and all the sex he can handle. All at taxpayer expense.

He wins!

What David Sherman's life might look like back on track:

FTA: In an interview Thursday at the Sarpy County Jail in Papillion where Sherman is being held, he said he's not sure what his fate will be, but that he had a good reason for trying to steal a $79 DVD player.

I was expecting a "my dying child wanted to watch Miracle on 34th Street one last time" when he said a good reason. I think someone needs to tell him what "good" means.

With all these Wal-mart stories on Fark lately, we are in dire need of a "Wal-mart" tag.

Without reading the article, I bet the suspect was Indo-Aleutian

farking pigs, those cops are no go good, probably shking down the walmart to get their own Christmas presents for free. There's no such thing as a good cop as long as they protect the scum in their midst.

-ALTERNATIVELY

OMG!!! 24 Shefiff's Deputies!!! What if there had been a robbery on the other side of the county!!!Tax dollars being wasted!!! Wher responsible small government? Wher?!

Am I doinitrite FARK?

Felony shoplifting charges? For stealing a $79 item?

Lame. I understand that he is somewhat of a career criminal, but come on.

I can't see any shred of decency in this guy. He's a career criminal who says "Hey, I get drugged up and do whatever the hell I want, I don't think about anything I just do it." It's his sixth time to be caught, which means he's probably done this kind of thing hundreds of times. Toss him in a hole.

Some states make theft of even 1 cent a felony. You could steal a candy bar and it is a felony shoplifting. We have this in Indiana. Shoplift and you are now a felon if the state chooses to pursue it.

Also note that the guy has been arrested multiple times for shoplifting.
