After the second or third time that Aliens invaded and the Doctor had to blow shiat up to save the city, people took the hint and started getting out of town for Christmas.

Going running in the morning on Christmas Day is one of the most peaceful experiences I ever had in Connecticut.

I read that as "city of completely empty people" and I knew London couldn't have anything over certain places I've been.

I once saw Oxford Street completely empty. It was right after an IRA bomb threat and the cops had the placed cleared damn quick.

Try any Catholic country on a Sunday. That works too.

/now I miss London, crap

I wouldn't call it "completely empty of people", after all someone was running around with a camera.

2011-12-26 12:33:29 AM
Years ago I took the dog out one Christmas morning, and there was nobody out. We sat down in the middle of a usually busy road for a couple of minutes because I figured why not. Kind of dumb because it was cold, but an interesting thing for younger me.

I drove through my city this morning and it was so serene with about 800 quadrillion fewer cars in the way.

Wish it were like that all the time...

It's just not Christmas without the Doctor and London in danger.

I remember that happening one Christmas when I was a child and it just freaked me out. I've never seen an empty city on Christmas day since then, there's always been cars and people around.

this blows my mind, I would LOVE for this to happen. I got up at 5am to head over to my parents this morning, and there were all kinds of people out and about in my neighborhood, in car and on foot. I understand people love seeing the Christmas Lights in my neighborhood (all the retailers hang lights) but it was 5am on Christmas day. It's not even like it's NYC either, it's in the middle of KC and QuikTrip was the only nearby thing open.

THE DOCTOR (CONT'D): Hi there, sorry, obvious question, um, where's everyone gone?
STAN: Scared.
THE DOCTOR: Right, yes, scared of what?
STAN: Where've you been living? London! At Christmas! Not safe, is it?
THE DOCTOR: But why?
STAN: It's them! Up above. Christmas before last, we had that big bloody spaceship. Everyone standing on the roof! Then last year, that Christmas Star, electrocuting all over the place, draining the Thames. This year, God knows what. So everyone's scarpered, gone to the country. 'Cept me, and her Majesty.

In a similar vein is an amazing book titled Tokyo Nobody (which is now, unfortunately, 'out-of-print' .. though, it usually turns up easily enough in a casual search of used bookstores, around here).

static.planete-powershot.net

Photographer Masataka Nakano gathered the images for this book over the course of 11 years, on those extremely rare fleeting moments during which the streets of downtown Tokyo were completely devoid of people.

OMG, I did exactly the same thing!

Years ago, I took the dog out for a walk, and the roads seemed very quiet, so we sat down in the middle of a normally busy street, because really, how often do you get a chance to do that? It was amazing; one of the defining moments of my life. A bread truck came around the corner going about 45 and we (the dog and I) were killed instantly. It was the worst Christmas ever.

Go to those places even just a couple people walking around the area near big ben would seem empty in comparison, I usually dont mind crowds but that place sucked with all the people crammed into that area.

I remember looking out on Toronto's 401 superhighway from a 16th floor condo when Armstrong walked on the Moon. Not a car or truck as far as one could see. It was amazing.

I used to go for a really long walk every New Year's Day in Providence. It's got to the be quietest time of year there. I remember walking Thayer Street (normally very busy and congested narrow commercial street on College Hill) from end to end, and not seeing a single car or person. So very peaceful. I particularly enjoyed it because Rhode Island is normally very noisy.

I've seen this on Chuseok (추석) in Korea. Eerie how a large city (Incheon, in this case) can suddenly turn into an almost ghost town.

Did the photographer see the old girl who walks the streets of London?

Years ago when the final section of Route 287 was being built in New Jersey, I rode my bicycle of a couple of miles on the new section of highway before it was open for traffic. It sure was interesting riding a bike on a 4 lane highway that was brand new and smooth as a baby's butt.

San Francisco on Christmas morning would be pretty quiet, but the Chinese are definitely up and at 'em.

Walking through Times Square on the night of the blackout of August 2003. You could walk through and not even notice you just passed through Times Square.

I live a little north of I-80/I-90, aka, the Ohio Turnpike and can see it from my windows, it is always busy, save two nights a year Christmas Eve, and New Years Eve, when you may see a car or truck, say, every five minutes or so. Eerie.
