The Marine's Prayer

Almighty Father, whose command is over all and whose love never fails, make me aware of Thy presence and obedient to Thy will. Keep me true to my best self, guarding me against dishonesty in purpose and deed and helping me to live so that I can face my fellow Marines, my loved ones, and Thee without shame or fear. Protect my family.

Give me the will to do the work of a Marine and to accept my share of responsibilities with vigor and enthusiasm. Grant me the courage to be proficient in my daily performance. Keep me loyal and faithful to my superiors and to the duties my Country and the Marine Corps have entrusted to me. Help me to wear my uniform with dignity, and let it remind me daily of the traditions which I must uphold.

If I am inclined to doubt, steady my faith; if I am tempted, make me strong to resist; if I should miss the mark, give me courage to try again.

Guide me with the light of truth and grant me wisdom by which I may understand the answer to my prayer.

Big deal. So some menial laborer from 1941 somehow survived an attack so he could go on to continue a life of ditch-digging for the next 70 years. Stop the presses.

Meh, those are the very few people I'm willing to grant the right to. Mostly because how do you tell someone as old as your grandfather to change his speech patterns.

Sad: that for 70 years, all that man could think about was the friends he lost aboard the Arizona.

Apparently, nothing else in the rest of his life could match what he had lost, and it would define him for the rest of his life.

Sadder: The rest of you poor shiats reading this on Christmas Day, who probably don't even have that.

Insane: Apparently in the 1940s, you could be a PFC by the time you were 16. Either that or the reporter dropped a digit somewhere.

Not to excuse even mild racism but it was a very different time and most of the people that still use that word don't mean it in a derogatory sense anymore, it's just what they've said their entire lives and don't think anything of it anymore. Even if they do still harbor resentment I suppose it's remotely understandable after you've seen your buddies getting mowed down by a specific racial group and to have witnessed the other atrocities committed in that conflict.

/CSB, my grandfather was on the Bunker Hill when it was hit by the Kamikaze attacks. He spoke of it exactly once and he still had some very strong feelings about the Japanese people, after what he had experienced I wouldn't think I could change his mind even if he was the great man that he was.

-10/10. You are trying too hard, and as such you would normally get 0/10. But, you are also trolling a story about a dead veteran, that gets you -5 points. The fact that you are a douche gets you another -5. Next time try not to be so blatant about it. Think before you troll and you will get a better score.

Thank you, sir.

I was privileged to know a PH survivor, and his story about the attack were vivid and amazing. I consider it an honor that he was willing to share with my dad and I his story. He hated the Japanese for a long time, but towards the end of his life, his hatred softened quite a bit.

I can't even imagine the horror of being a firsthand witness to Pearl Harbor.

Ben Affleck is reportedly terrible in it.

They put those remote operated tiny subs with cameras in the Titanic. Why don't they do that with the Arizona? Is it because it's a military tomb?

Probably because none of the networks would pay for it. I think it's been covered to death already :)

I hope you told him the truth. Long months at sea makes a man long for companionship. If not for those magazines and wadding tissue, the seamen would all turn gay.

What they really need to do to build a coffer dam around the Arizona, slowly drain it, remove the oil, then flood it again. The ship is an eco time bomb.

Mind you, it's also full of rotting 16" shells and cordite. What a nightmare that would be.

An eco timebomb that is politically off limits until the last person that remembers WW2 dies.
