Okay, it's not a classic, but it's a damn fine movie for what it was intended to be.

I laughed when someone told me that 'Santa Clause' was a classic today (the one with Tim Allen). And then I realized just how old that movie is.

Hey, jackweed, I get more action in a week than you've had in your entire life. I've got houses in L.A., Paris and Vail. In each one, a 70 inch plasma screen. So I suggest you wipe that stupid smile off your face before I come over there and SMACK it off! You feeling strong, my friend? Call me elf one more time.

/he's an angry elf.

I don't know if I'd call Elf a "classic", but it's an excellent Christmas movie and we do watch it every year with the kids so it's heading in that direction for me.

instant classic

FFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!

Hate that.

Elf was a delightful romp celebrating the faithful innocence of a childlike heart and the wonder in which we can see the world anew..creating an instant classic of a timeless message to delight generations to come.

..and i'll cut the biatch that says different.

Yes, "Love Actually" was.

I'd call that pretty classic.

Seth'n'Spectrum: Yes, "Love Actually" was.

Love Actually: The only romantic comedy that get the machoist of men to admit that they wanted Colin Firth to get the girl or that Alan Rickman was a tool. And that Joni Mitchell now gets them a little weepy.

I won tickets to see Elf and I still wanted my money back. Hated that movie. I can't stand Will Ferrell, though, so I was probably a bit biased going in.

I figured I'd just post another Zooey pic.Seemed like the thing to do.

It would be premature to call Elf classic. If people in the next generation like it, then yeah. When we abuse words they lose their distinctiveness, so we have to invent new words that contain the lost specificity or power. Epic, classic, alternative... all beaten into meaninglessness.

/liked Elf

Dalek Caan's doomed mistress: I laughed when someone told me that 'Santa Clause' was a classic today (the one with Tim Allen). And then I realized just how old that movie is.

FedEx was still known as Federal Express (they delivered the boxes containing the list)

Yeah, ELF was terrible. Halfway through the movie they decided they have to find an ending and pulled the NAZGHUL OF THE PARK SERVICE out of their ass. It's one long SNL sketch where they don't even have the good taste to just cut away to a commercial.

2011-12-25 02:41:36 PM
this makes my soul hurt.

2011-12-25 03:02:51 PM
Lord knows they're trying so hard to force it into "classic" status, just like TBS woefully did with "A Christmas Story". USA Network and other NBC/Universal stations have been playing it at least once a night for the whole damn month.

2011-12-25 04:10:54 PM
Hadn't seen that cut scene from ACS yet so this is prolly the first slide show I've seen in a while that wasn't totally annoying. Bit of a treat. Do quite like that movie still although yeah, they do kinda put it in heavy rotation this time of year.

Still haven't seen Love,Actually or Elf yet.

2011-12-25 05:07:54 PM
Not yet, but it will be.

2011-12-25 05:15:56 PM
Elf is just sort of "meh" in my book, but yeah, it's definitely crossed the threshold into Holiday staple. Damn thing was like the 3rd most popular Apple TV rental the other day when I was looking.

2011-12-25 05:20:25 PM
And the story about "Elf" has nothing to do with "Elf."

THANK YOU.

I somewhat like Elf, but I'm biased I guess because, yes, I like Will Ferrell. At least, I like parts of Elf. The movie absolutely FALLS APART immediately after Peter Dinkledge exists stage right.

The Central Park crap immediately afterwards is poor written, poorly shot, poorly acted, makes little sense, is jumpy, and overall not funny or particularly heartwarming.

/family watched it last night
//followed by Christmas Vacation which is, indeed, a classic

/Will Ferrell is less funny than Adam Sandler.

Will Ferrell is in it, so chances are I will never see it. Like 99.999999999999999999999%.

IlGreven: /Will Ferrell is less funny than Adam Sandler.

this brings up an additional point: anyone hating it b/c 'will ferrell' might be missing out. this was way more about sweetness and less about funny. and you also don't look for plotholes in a feel-good movie either.. tho i thought the Nazgul comment pretty savvy fwtw.

same with adam sandler. YES OK he's a comedic idiot. BUT: 50 first dates, and Click.

both these guys are actually pretty good giving the reach around to drama, it turns out.

Went to see Elf in the theater, I can't remember exactly why we did that. One of three movies that I walked out of before it ended. God-farking awful stupid garbage only digestable by retards.. Actually got my money back.

/the 'new' King Kong and some 80s date move were the others

I cry at the end of Elf when Zoey Dechannel climbs atop the carriage and starts singing "Santa Claus is Coming to Town."

/Jon Favreau, you bastard, you made me cry.

I prefer the uncut, uncensored version of "Love Actually." They never show the Martin Freeman scenes on TV.

Can't believe there are douchenozzles that don't like Jon Favreau movies.

It is hard to take you seriously at all. I mean you paid to go to the new King Kong? Even if you didn't pay you went to the theater to see it, and that makes you kinda retarded in my opinion.

I saw an HBO version where he suddenly appears with his 'date' in the final scene at the children's play, with no explanation or context whatsoever. Boooooooo.

I have a hard time with people calling "Christmas Vacation" a classic. It was meh, but maybe I'm just comparing it to the other Vacation movies.

"Elf" is in the early-Christmas rotation. The syrup and pasta gag gets me every time.

"Christmas Vacation" is absolutely a classic.

Polarizing movie, no doubt. You either love it or hate it. There is no middle road.

I really can't most of Will Ferrell's movies. Taladega nights was stopped about 20 mins into it and so was The Other Guys. But he was very good in Elf and I really like that movie. I also really enjoyed Stranger than Fiction. Kicking and Screaming was tolerable (Ditka was great).

Love Christmas Vacation.

Wait, wha.... PETER FARKING DINKLAGE is in it?

And a blonde Zooey?

I may have to check this out.

Two words: Just Judy.

And it's a very British film. If it was made today, there would be more references about the Doctor destroying London.

I enjoyed Elf.

I don't have much beef with Will Ferrel. His comedy is low brow, yelling-makes-it-funnier. To expect Groucho Marx is just retarded.

Enjoy something for once.

He's incredibly funny in Elf.

It's not a huge part (oh god, I'm going to hell for that pun) but it's certainly a memorable scene.

"A Christmas Story" and "Christmas Vacation" are my two standards I have to see every Christmas. I used to watch "A Christmas Story" with my dad as a kid every Christmas. After it came out and went to cable, HBO used to air it non-stop every December. And "Christmas Vacation"... well that's some funny shiat right there. I used to watch "A Wonderful Life" and "The Little Princess" (1939) with my great-grandma if I happened to be visiting with her for Christmas. One of the local stations always played those two along with "Miracle on 34th Street" a few times leading up to Christmas.

I refuse to watch Elf. What little bits I've seen of it between flipping through channels, it looks incredibly stupid. I'm not really a big Will Farrell fan.

But everyone has their own tastes. So....

Seeing it only in passing glances on TV, Elf looks like nothing more than James Caan's buttcheek of a face sharing screen time with various NY locations: office, mall, another office, living room, street. Guh.

2011-12-28 05:09:29 PM
A true classic is Christmas Carol with Scrooge played by Alastair Sim. That is all.
