(Sun Sentinel)   Stabbing death over loud music leaves many questions. How loud was the music? Was it really worth killing over? Why is the housing project called the "Pork 'n Beans"?   (sun-sentinel.com ) divider line

No surprise to those who understand the volume of any sound system is invariably inverse to the taste in music of its owner.

They're called the Pork 'n Beans because of the exterior color scheme of the buildings (brown and beige or whatever).

Obviously it's called Pork -n- Beans because it's known for its delicious pork and beans. In fact, it's where pork and beans were invented, in 1922, by Dr. Porkenbeans, who was originally from Jacksonville, but moved down to Miami when he heard how hungry they were down there at the time. Interestingly enough, he was killed by a mob of distraught pork and beans workers in a dispute over the volume of the Pork -N- Beans jingle music which emanated from the Pork -n- Beans factory all night and day.

True story.

There were days when I lived in apartments where I got close to assault over loud music late at night (once we had things knocked off the wall at 3am). It's a bit of a stretch from there to homicide, but it's not impossible to imagine.

All these housing projects need is a little more of our money. Then they'll be virtual paradises.

in the carefree '50's when the construction project was newly finished, the neighborhood was sponsored by van de kamp's pork and beans. they had the biggest billboard at the ball field every year until campbell's edged in during the '70's.
the pork n beans was then sponsored by bush's baked beans in the '80's, followed by a few generic names until sponsorship fell to the wayside.

That story reminds me of The Great Molasses Flood of 1919 that killed 21 people and injured another 150.

Pork and beans is one of the more uncivilized public housing complexes here in miami.

/upset i pay taxes so people can live in free/subsidized housing and not take care of it.

//it is worse when you drive by and see direct tv dishes on said homes.

Somebody needed to come over and stab my upstairs neighbors yesterday. Loud music and the kids stomping on the floor like little Lords of the Dance. It started sometime early in the afternoon and finally stopped around 2AM. I got very little work done all day. Even with earplugs I could hear it louder than I'd play my own music.

Man you should see the public housing where I live, tasteful, small and well maintained little apartment/condos that many of you would love to live in. Doesn't stop the teens that live there from getting big PROJECTS tattoos on their back, chest, neck, etc.

Some other suggestions as to name origin

The term that they are referring to is the poor part of town, and that is why they refer to it as the Pork and Bean area on that show.

It got the name because that is what a lot of poor people can afford to be eating. Rather than eating steak and Lobster type of food. People in these area's are poorer and there for the reference to pork and beans area

It is called the "the pork and beans area" because of the canning company which produced pork and beans can food in the Miami area.

it's a racial slur for Portuguese.
Its a kind of food
i don't know what else it could mean.

It has to do with the doors of the Liberty Square Housing complex during it's development. There was also "blueberries" and "green machine."
With time and different paint jobs, only the Pork n Beans name stuck.

The "Pork 'n' Beans Projects" is a slang term for the Liberty Square Housing Project in Miami Florida. The nickname may have come about due to the orange doors in one section of the projects at one time, or alternately, the affordability of the canned food as a dietary staple.

- Interesting that about two generations ago the origin was probably obvious to everyone, but now it's speculative and there will probably never be an authoritative answer (tho that won't stop people being "certain" that they know)

- and then histories like the Bible get handed down orally for hundreds of generations, and people expect it to be correct and meaningful in every way
