Bucky Katt: Was he wearing the fancy red shoes, too?

He loves those shoes. But in his defense, like the John Pauls before him, he draws the line at the Triple Tiara. He even got one this year, but still won't do it.

Organized religion has been the single largest contributor to misery, overpopulation, famine, war, and general human suffering for the last 3000 or so years.

If people really need to find God, churches aren't going to do squat for you.

Fifteen minutes a week in the woods, listening to.. well... the woods would be a good place to start.

The Catholic Church does much good work in the world and has been doing so for centuries. Certainly there are parts of Church history that are not very complimentary, but Catholics today feed, clothe, care for the health needs, and relieve the suffering of millions of people annually.

The vestments the Holy Father wears are gifts and hand-me-downs. The Church's temporal riches are primarily in it's museums and archives in which priceless treasures are conserved, curated and made available for everyone - not just Catholics - to see and study. You don't have to be Catholic to experience the art and beauty of St. Peters or the Vatican museums, or study in the Vatican archives, you need not be Christian, nor even religious.

The appointments in St. Peter's Basilica weren't installed this week, nor this year, nor this century. St. Peter's was begun in the early 1500's and completed more than a hundred years later. The beauty of the space is appropriate to the wonderful Mass that takes place inside. It is the largest Christian (and of course Catholic) church in the world and was constructed so that those that visit could worship God in all his majesty. It is not the Pope's official church he is Bishop of Rome, his seat - his cathedra - is in the Archbasilca of St. John Latrean, a church a few miles away in the city of Rome.

The Holy Father's homily did ask us to remember the reason for Christmas, it is not to buy presents for one another, but it is about Jesus. Christmas is indeed a religious holy day, not simply an all too secular holiday.

Today Christmas has become a commercial celebration, whose bright lights hide the mystery of God's humility, which in turn calls us to humility and simplicity. Let us ask the Lord to help us see through the superficial glitter of this season, and to discover behind it the child in the stable in Bethlehem, so as to find true joy and true light.

The Pope and Linus have had it right for many years, it is not news they have both been saying it for many years.

Tomorrow the Holy Father gives his annual Christamas Urbi et Orbi (to the city [Rome] and the world) address. While the text of that address is not available yet last year's has some very important and topical exhortations:
May the light of Christmas shine forth anew in the Land where Jesus was born, and inspire Israelis and Palestinians to strive for a just and peaceful coexistence. May the comforting message of the coming of Emmanuel ease the pain and bring consolation amid their trials to the beloved Christian communities in Iraq and throughout the Middle East; may it bring them comfort and hope for the future and bring the leaders of nations to show them effective solidarity. May it also be so for those in Haiti who still suffer in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake and the recent cholera epidemic. May the same hold true not only for those in Colombia and Venezuela, but also in Guatemala and Costa Rica, who recently suffered natural disasters.

May the birth of the Saviour open horizons of lasting peace and authentic progress for the peoples of Somalia, Darfur and Côte d'Ivoire; may it promote political and social stability in Madagascar; may it bring security and respect for human rights in Afghanistan and in Pakistan; may it encourage dialogue between Nicaragua and Costa Rica; and may it advance reconciliation on the Korean peninsula.

The message is peace, and coexistence, helping one another especially those who have been victims of disaster. May we have peace in war torn regions and human rights universally. Peace, the message is peace. You might not believe in God, you might believe but not be Christian, you may be Christian but not Catholic, but the message applies to us all, the message is universal. As Catholics we look to a Child born thousands of years ago in the middle east, we celebrate the birth of that Child at Christmastide. Christmas is a reminder of the message of peace, we should carry that reminder with us all the days of the year, not just on Christmas.

Peace be with you. Peace be with us all, that was my prayer at midnight Mass this morning, and that is my prayer every day of the year. Peace and kindness to all.

You guys are mistakenly assuming that Catholics actually practice what they preach. You may as well post passages from the Qaran, they follow that about as closely as they do the Bible...

Not hating on Catholics specifically, it's just that we're talking about the Pope. Really most followers of organized religion have a tendency to do the exact opposite of what said religion teaches, so... no offense, Pope Palpatine. As much as it might hurt you to admit this, you're as human as the rest of us.

Normally I'm pretty reasonable about people having differing opinions about this sort of thing. But in this case, get the fark over yourselves, you jackholes. Whether you like it or not, reality is that some people like to donate things (as in their time and/or money) directly to the Vatican of their own free will, earmarked for specific purposes that do not necessarily involve giving to the poor. When people give you gifts, do you reject them and tell the giver to give the things to charity instead? I think that for the most part you don't, because something that is given to you is intended for your own use. Why expect different from them?
