I love fruitcake, that stuff is yummy. I'm not sure why people are so critical of it.

Surely with his Sweating To The Oldies, he's got to be worth more than that.

My dad loved fruitcake. None of the rest of us could stand it. He was given a coffee mug once that said "Get even. Give fruitcake." and found it hilarious because the person had no idea they had given it to the only person they knew who actually loved the stuff.

This is the first year we haven't had to go buy one.

I really thought this was going to be about Joe Biden.

SharkTrager - sorry. I lost my dad years ago but I really miss him at this time of year. He grew up very poor during the depression and liked getting lots of gifts even if they were just minor things. We always put a lot of them under the tree for him, because he was a great guy.

How much for a hot cocoa sampler?

Actually, if it's made right fruitcake is pretty tasty. A lot of store bought cakes are too dry.

Properly stored and soaked with rum, fruitcakes can remain safely edible for decades.

Exactly. A good fruitcake, none of that store bought nonsense, is delicious. I have a five year old one that I've been seasoning weekly with brandy, and a few times a year with home made limoncello. Even the local Russians are afraid of this fruitcake, but it is delicious. I just always check that everyone who has some has a designated driver first.

/was hoping to season this fruitcake well enough to make it into a family heirloom of doom
//beginning to look like I'll need to make a new one soon to have it slightly reading for the next holiday season

There's a Trappist Abbey in Kentucky that makes a wonderful fruitcake we order each year. It arrives around the beginning of October and by the end of December it's gone.

/Just had a slice as a late night snack.
//I like mine soaked with bourbon.

These. I was firmly in the "hate fruitcake" camp for years and years. Then, one year, an aunt gave us a home made fruitcake. It was delicious! It's just like Bucky Katt says, if it's made right fruitcake can be really good.

They should have a "Where's George" (new window) for fruitcakes.

Close, but that fruitcake is seven years younger.

People who hate fruitcake have never had a proper fruitcake. Hint: if you bought it at the grocery, it's not a good fruitcake. I'm enjoying a slice of ours right now, and god, it is good. We "age" ours about two weeks; that's as long as we can keep them before breaking down and opening them up. I make at least three every year- one for Christmas eve/morning, one for new years, and one for the week in between. And it all gets eaten, every last crumb.

Traditional Christmas breakfast/brunch staples around here: fruitcake, eggnog, and bourbon balls.

My mother made fruitcake. For the non-alcoholic variety it was okay, though on any given day I'd rather have a chocolate cake.
