My dad led a Canadian military Police unit in WWII and his best time was the six months he supervised the local "coffee shop" near where they were based in France. One coffee pot and 14 pretty girls; they served more than a hot cafe au lait, if you know what I mean. His job was to make sure all the men were gone by 10 PM and that the Base CO never caught on to what was really going on there.

Route Irish retired the mortgage on my buddy's house, laid up a damn fine supply of surplus capital and bought his wife a new Ford F150 in just two years of "private contractor escort duty". And he got to throw a lot of rounds downrange at the bad guys. And has GREAT effing stories and a concussion headache he's still trying to shake,

This is an epic tale. Good stuff, subby.

The Baghdad Country Club, the only authentic bar and restaurant in Baghdad's Green Zone

You mean the most heavily fortified compound in the world? How hard could it be?

A bar full of mercenaries, special ops and other soldiers? Harder than you think.

Hopefully the US Air Force would never provide a few rounds on the house.

You don't know what it's like - being in there every day putting my ass on the line. And I don't have your order! Your waitress doesn't have your order! No one in the whole freaking bar has your order! You want a beer? You want a shot? You can't handle the booze! 'Cause when you reach over and put your hand into the ice cooler that used to be your best friend's face, you'll know what to do! Forget it Ali, it's Baghdadtown!

Why wouldn't you admit that? Dad helped run a French whore house that catered to soldiers during WWII and put him at risk with the Base CO? That is an awesome story.

It's nice the author only used the guy's first name as requested so people wouldn't figure out what he did before opening the bar... and then went into unnecessary detail as to what he did before he opened a bar... in an article that tells you exactly where to find the guy.

Those reporter folks are some fine fellas.

Clemkadidlefark: he got to throw a lot of rounds downrange at the bad guys

so your friend was an Iraqi freedom fighter who fought against the western invaders in Blair's oil wars? Or are you implying the bad guys were native iraqis who all of a sudden found themselves getting shot and run over by abrams tanks manned by white people who come from countries in a completely different hemisphere?

The BAGHDAD COUNTRY CLUB is probably safer than the bars in some areas in the capital of the United States of America, Washington D.C.
Ironic... no?

Cool or Spiffy tag

There are men who do stuff like join the Paras, become mercenaries and open bars in war zones.

Then there are people for whom the most exciting thing they have done in their lives are crossing a busy street to get to Starbucks, wait days in line for the latest I-Pad or defecated in public at a OWS gathering.

Freedom fighters, soldiers, rebels, patriots, terrorists, insurgents, war heroes, cannon fodders etc. are all the same people.
It just depend on which side won because histories are written by the victors.

Once the shiates take over the country they can kiss alcohol goodbye! And when that happens people will remember the good old days, when Saddam was in power and people had freedom.

I worked as a contractor in Kabul for a few years...there were a couple of underground bars out in the city that we would go to on occasion. Very expensive, something like $8 for a beer, twice as much for a mixed drink. But, well worth it to go and relax for a few hours considering the workload and general stress of living in one of the worst places on the planet.

The bars were guarded by locals strapped with AK-47s and if you were lucky you might have a conversation with a guard who happened to have some hash in his pocket that he wanted to get rid of.

Good times.

They already do. They used to have power, running water, and streets that were safe to walk in.

A bar in Iraq? Aren't those muslims forbidden to drink alcohol? Or was the bar solely for all the other people who had no business conquering the place? Either way, you get no sympathy from me.
