Wasn't the Statue of Liberty intended to celebrate American independence from colonial rule rather than the end of the civil war? That's why the base commemorates 1776 rather than 1865, surely? I hope that list wasn't written by an American...

Both really. Bartholdi was inspired by Laboulaye's support for the Union in the US Civil War, but also by the Franco-American cooperation in the US Revolution.
(Also, the date July 4, 1776 is inscribed on the tabula ansata, not on the base.)

Fair enough, seems like it deserves as much a mention as the civil war though. Apologies, I'm just going from my memory of a GCSE history class 16 years ago.

Cheers for your clarification :)

Y'know, I'm cool with Amazon gift cards.

/Planning on getting the collector's edition of ME3, plus maybe some new reading material on my Kindle.
//Started using Amazon after I joined the Army; fell in love during deployment. Two-day shipping works even to the Middle East! </CSB>

I'm greatly disappointed. Somewhere in the top three I was expecting to see 'severed head on platter'.

/guess it's not so great for those named John

Tabbed browsing can be strange sometimes. I came right here from the "what are you having for Christmas dinner?" thread (new window) and was seriously confused for a second.

Well, just like New Shimmer is a dessert topping AND a floor wax, a severed head on a platter makes for a great pick-nick lunch AND a great present.
