Whatever it was, you can't prove it now. If it was a comet or a super nova there is no physical proof left that we can use, at least at our current level of technology and understanding. If it was a sign from God then he evidently made it visible to believers only because other civilizations make no definitive mention a an unusually bright star around that time. And people who believe will accept no proof that they are wrong and people who say they believe in science will say that there is no objective proof.

Phobos Grunt will fall into a mini-wormhole when it finally re-enters the atmosphere and travel back in time to burn up right over the east coast of the Mediterranean.

Until it's shown to have been recorded outside religious mythology it's right up there with that story of the sun stopping in the sky for a day and being noticed by absolutely no one except the author of said mythology.

Yawn. Don't we get this story every year? Might have been the Enterprise coming back to make sure the Borg didn't ruin Christmas for everyone.

I've heard that the 'Christmas Star' appeared very big and bright, because it was the alignment of Jupiter, Saturn, and Marsd

As a Christian, I have to admit it's pretty much the best line ever, but it also ruined it for everyone else forever. No one will ever be able to say 'We didn't have sex, God did it!'

Is it still acceptable to say "THIS," because THIS!

The rest of the world had already started recording astronomical data, and no record of such a star exists.

I love listening to these types of people try and find explanations for this kind of stuff.

It's like watching "experts" trying to explain how the Moses parted the Red Sea or Big Foot "experts" discussing how in the absence of any real evidence, there is so obviously an entire breeding population of the creatures out there.

Very entertaining.

Planetary movements can be extrapolated into the past. Several notable astronomical events with prominent meanings for the Sumerians and post-Babylonian Exile Hebrews occured in the years surrounding the alleged birth of Jesus of Nazareth (new window). Some of these in particular would have signified the arrival or death of a kingly figure in the area of Palestine. Nothing matches up exactly with biblical narratives, but that's to be expected--they aren't scientifice writings, but hagiographies (new window).

Electriclectic: The rest of the world had already started recording astronomical data, and no record of such a star exists.

The cultural definition of star was quite different and varied in ancient cultures--it doesn't correspond to modern definitions.,
