I only recognize the Mortal Kombat and TMNT ones. Anyone want to help out what the others are references too?

List fails without Return of the Ghostbusters

Fan made? Not hating cause they were pretty good, especially the Mortal Combat one, but I think the term fan made is being used in the loosest sense here. There seemed to be some pretty good production values used in these. When I read fan made I was expecting films done by a few mates on consumer equipment.

/Still enjoyed these
//Just thing they are being called something they aren't

Technically you could do those in AfterEffects or Maya, both consumer software.

Better than all of those.

True, the special effects are not beyond the average consumer with skill, but it just seems that some of those vids would be too expensive for a group of average fans to pull off. I like fan made stuff cause anyone can do it.

I guess my biggest problem is with my 2 favourite vids from that list. The 'Blinky' vid has stuff like rock steady moving shots that would either require an expensive steady cam rig or at the very least some sort of track system. It also has zoom shots that can't be done without expensive parfocal lenses and a focus pulling rig (granted those aren't silly amounts of money but still beyond a small setup). Plus it's confirmed to be by Ruairi Robinson who, according to his website is a commercials director and Oscar Nominee. Plus it apparently stars a kid from 'Where the Wild things are' (I'm assuming thats accurate but I haven't ever seen that film so I wouldn't recognise him).

The Mortal Kombat one is listed as being directed by Kevin Tancharoen, another Director with experience in films and TV. And I'm pretty sure I recognise the main guy from something. Again, also some camera work that seems out of the reach of those with consumer equipment.

I'm an amateur videographer and this isn't sour grapes cause I know I'm not as talented as many. But having a knowledge of how filming works, as soon as I started watching those I could see that it was too 'professional'.

Granted that some of the other films look like they could be acheived with a minimal budget and seem to have 'unknowns' as the stars so I'll accept that they might be fan made. I just find it a bit unfair to list the 2 I've mentioned as fan made when they have such backing. It's like putting an olympic runner in a small town sports festival and just listing him as a local. If you're gonna run the big guys agains the little guys, at least have the decency to be honest about it.

ranak: No Ryan vs. Dorkman?

I love that video.

dwade: Came for grayson leaves unsatisfied.

I'm pretty sure I was more blown away by the Grayson trailer than I was by any of the Dark Knight films in their entirety.

I agree with ranak, where's RVD & RVD2?

Liked "The Archivist" from the linked list the best of the seven.

Like I told my co-workers, I'd pay to see this, if they made the other (minimum 90 minutes) like this...

Yeah, I see what you're saying, and you're right. Even being able to use Maya and After Effects competently takes some training or at least a ton of practice. And neither are cheap, even if they are (consumer priced).

I nominate them to do the second part of the hobbit film. If I was Jackson and saw this I'd be a bit impressed

That's because it's Michael Jai White: HBO's Mike Tyson, Spawn, The Dark Knight, Black Dynamite, Undisputed, Exit Wound (the DMX Steven Seagal
Tom Arnold movie)

Thank you :) That had been bothering me that I couldn't figure out who he was. I think it was Batman that I recognised him from.

Oh another thing....... for the fan made argument that really bugged me

WHAT are these videos FANS of? Yeah, there's the MK, TMNT and ectetera, but the Black Hole one? (and yeah what's with the he usage of the term black hole, he's more like the Spot from Spider-Man.)

Yeah. "Fan Film" means it was made by fans of an existing franchise. Most of these don't seem related to anything I've heard of.

Whatcha gonna do when they come for you? TROOPS by Kevin Rubio is still one of my favorites. (new window)

Fallout: Nuka Break

Link (new window)

I mean, the list is great and all. But c'mon. The Mortal Kombat clip alone starred Michal Jai White (better known as freakin' Spawn) and Jeri Ryan (better known as Seven of Nine from Star Trek: Voyager.) Then the director was given funding by Warner Brothers to do a series of nine clips (that you can find on YouTube) and then they just went ahead and told him to do a movie.

Nuka Break is actually fan made and produced. Granted, also written by the guy who made the 8-Bit Theater webcomic, which is where I learned of its existence. But still falls under the category of home made.

And I'm fond of this one

Jedi Ninjas Ft. Team2X (new window)

Three words: Nijas. With. Lightsabers.

Watch it, you will.

Oh, and I'm also quite fond of Freddy Wong's stuff. His Aimbot video (new window) is highly amusing (and only a little over a minute long).

2011-12-25 02:50:22 AM
If any of those was made into a full length movie/tv show, I'd probably watch it.

Salesman Pete uses a style very reminiscent of The Incredibles. I think that may well have been the idea.
Pivot looks like a reference to the Saw movies.
The Archiver seems familiar to me but I can't place the reference.

Anybody have an idea for Blinky and The Black Hole?

Blinky reminded me of a twisted version of A.I.

Didn't watch The Black Hole, but from the premise I thought of this for some reason:

fusillade762: Didn't watch The Black Hole,

You should go back to it. I think it was only 1 minute and a neat piece.
