Oh no, an old device not built to current specs can't get the new OS (Officially). People didn't buy the Galaxy S phone or tablet for ICS.

Not like it was promised either.

//no I won't upgrade

No matter, Samsung's Kies software sucks so bad that upgrading my dad's Galaxy s to even 2.3 has proven impossible.

/I hope to get ICS for my Motorola Atrix but I'm not really counting on it

Gotta love their explanation. "See, we put so much proprietary crap on there that you didn't want, it's not possible to do the upgrade that you probably do want. Sorry."

//cyanogenmod works on the Galaxy S iirc if you want to get rid of the crapola and (soon) upgrade Android

Hm, looks like cyanogenmod support is only for Galaxy S international version.

Meh. I am mostly underwhelmed by ICS.

My next phone will be Mango/Apollo or iOS.

I'm not too pleased by the way software updates are handled for Android handset. Rooting shouldn't be required to get rid of bloatware or to do anything worthwhile on your phone

2011-12-24 12:56:01 AM
This is why we have mods. I'm sure a rooted version of ICS minus the bloatware, will run fine on the Galaxy.

The samsung products that won't be getting ICS are near identical twins to Nexus S phones. In other words, brand new hardware.

Thanks for playing brah.

Isn't the iPhone 4S just an iPhone 4 with a new OS?

Doesn't Apple require you to pay $30 for every OSX version bump, while Microsoft gives you service packs for free? I am a bit annoyed that I didn't wait for the Nexus, I thought it wasn't coming out until early Spring. I also wouldn't have switched from Verizon to Sprint, but whatevs.

No, Apple customers just upgrade whenever they're supposed to.

And by that, I mean when someone in a black turtleneck comes out and asks everyone to please turn off their devices so his one device can work.

Isn't the iPhone 4S just an iPhone 4 with a new OS?

Outwardly, they look identical, but under the hood the iPhone 4 has a single core Cortex-A8 based A4 processor, while the 4S has a dual core Cortex-A9 based A5 (so you not only have double the cores, but you also have an updated microarchitecture). The iPhone 4 was also updated to iOS5, so the software between the two is pretty much identical aside from the Siri beta only being available on the 4S.

Apple charges $29 for the upgrade from OS X 10.6 to 10.7. Microsoft charges $119 to upgrade your copy of Windows from version 6.0 to version 6.1. When you look at the number of features added/changed between the two releases of both OSes, the scope of the two updates is pretty much the same.

Of course, it isn't like Apple HASN'T screwed their customers on an update in the past. A few years back they charged iPod Touch users $10 to get an iOS update that iPhone users received for free. They tried to explain it away as something required by accounting, but since other companies have started offering similarly major updates to competing product for free, Apple has quietly stopped charging for the updates on the Touches, even though the accounting rules they cited haven't changed.

I've had my G2 since it came out in Oct. of '10. Running CM7.1 just fine and I'm sure it will run CM9 just as well. Cyanogen is the only way to go.

As a Galaxy S owner all I can say is "meh". I can live without ICS or (if I hadn't already done so) I could root the phone and upgrade the OS.

One thing I can say for apple, they usually test the shiat out of releases and crank'em tight. Of course they control everything front to back, hardware and software. Quite different from the world of Android.

Meh, I bought my iPad 2 for Foreflight.

Random question: Do you use your Kindle Fire for any sort of document editing/creating, like with the Documents to Go app, or use any of the other note apps available through the Amazon App store? If so, how well do they work?

I am thinking about finally getting a tablet, and while I'd prefer a Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet, I really only need a decent method of taking notes during lectures so if I can get away with being cheap I'd rather get the Fire.

Thanks for your time!

I have this problem with the original Galaxy I got only a year and a half ago. Been stuck on Android 1.5 the whole time. Samsung stopped supporting the phone months after I got it, if I recall correctly. I'm not a gadget nerd, so I didn't know that the phone was being phased out/becoming unsupported; my previous phone went screwball, so I needed something pronto.

Seems like it's a thing Samsung likes to do, so I won't be getting their crap again when I need a new phone. Don't really want an iPhone despite being a Mac user, so I'm thinking HTC? Guess I'd better become a gadget nerd in the near future.

Nope, firstly because the iPhone 1 came out over 4 years ago and secondly there was never an iPhone 2.

Platform fragmentation, another feature of the Android OS iOS hasn't copied.

Nope, Apple charges for the 10.X releases, but all the patches (service packs) between are free. So Apple charges about a third to a quarter of what Microsoft charges for a .X release

I have the several apps loaded, but haven't really used any of them. Evernote is available for the Fire, which should work great for what you need. The biggest issue I have is that the keyboard layout is a bit annoying for me. The space bar is to the left of center so I am always hitting the period instead. Since I do minimal typing on it, it's not a dealbreaker for me, but it could drive you crazy if you are using it to take copious notes.

I might be a little picky, though. I'm used to using the Windows Phone keyboard most of the day, and it has one of the best onscreen keyboards I've ever used in terms of accuracy and smartness of autocorrect, so maybe it just hard for me. If you are coming from an Android phone it probably feels more like what you are used to, since it is not that much different than the stock Gingerbread keyboard.

In regards to the Fire touchscreen accuracy, mine wasn't terrible to begin with but the accuracy and responsiveness of the touchscreen has improved quite a bit thanks to a few quick updates by Amazon. I can REALLY tell a difference with the Atari games collection.

Anyone else not exactly shiating a brick over this? Android OS (like all phone OSs) has reached a point where it's as good as "feature complete". You compare the new features between say Eclair and Froyo with the differences between Gingerbread and ICS, Eclair to Froyo had lots of new stuff. Gingerbread to ICS just doesn't.

SN1987a goes boom: So Apple will release Siri on all iPhones then?

I believe wired or someone like that pulled apart a 4s and found why apple has said Siri won't be on anything made before now. It has some parts set up for some of the recognition features. But people have hacked their older phones to install it, just runs like poo.

Simply using the phrase "walled garden" shows a lack of understanding of how software works and is created. It's one of those phrases like "hipster" and "security theater" that catch on and quickly lose all nuance.

If iOS development was a walled garden, how could I create whatever apps I wanted for my phone with no restrictions?

Wait, do you mean that it's walled only for people who don't know how to DIY? Ok fine, name something you'd like to do on a mobile device that apple restricts on the iPhone.

Such things do exist, but they are so few and far between that to call them a wall is rather ridiculous.

That's not really an answer to the hypothetical. Skyfire "supports flash" in that it pre-renders pages. iOS does not actually support Flash itself. Android does. So the question of what someone would like to do that Apple restricts, watching flash video is a correct answer because it is something Apple refuses to incorporate. The fact that a third party browser found a workaround does not remove the fact that iOS itself does not allow flash.

Here's another one: run interactive widgets on my home screen. Apple restricts that.
