Why does this happen about every 10 years?

It happened to me just last week. Trifecta in play?

If I was carrying around an instrument that cost more than I paid for my house, I'd be a bit more careful.

Or maybe go with a cheaper one and get a car.

Recovery of violins can be a fiddly business, but you probably should have handcuffed it to yourself if you're taking Megabus.

/Is this some kind of bus?

urban.derelict: Why does this happen about every 10 years?

it happens more frequently than that, strangely enough.

I think wiki or some similar site has a history of the most famous/expensive instruments like Strads and Guarnieri's, complete with the number of times they've been lost, stolen, damaged, etc. - it makes for a fun read if you're a music geek.

Just ask Vincenzo Jorio to make a new one. I don't see the problem.

It was a loaner. My initial reaction was similar and also if you had a violin that expensive why would you be taking a bus?

Nope, some idiots thought it was a good idea to loan a poor college student a really expensive instrument.

It will be interesting to see what happens. Is it going to be traded for crack and rot in some crack dealers home? Sold at a pawn shop for $150? End up in the hands of a homeless man on the street?

Insurance scam? If I had a $100k + instrument in my possession, it would be tethered to me at all times. Hell, here's what Metra said of Rachel Barton in her lawsuit against them for the loss of her goddamn leg.

"Metra argued that she made the choice not to extricate her arm from the strap of the violin case due to the value of the instrument, a 400-year-old Amati valued at around $500,000, and thus she carried most of the blame for her injuries."

This gets greenlit after the fact?

THEY ALREADY RECOVERED THE VIOLIN.

The bus company had found it, but it in a storage depot, and forgot to check it after it was reported missing. The next day a custodian noticed it in the depot, and it's already been returned to the student. The violin belongs to the people of Taiwan, who loaned it to her?

But my question is why is the student so groggy? Even after the bus ride the reporters have commented that the student is very fatigued....

More Stradivariuses have been lost or stolen than there are Stradivariuses.

A friend of mine has a Stradivarius. I am pretty sure he would shoot himself in the head if he lost it, or just go into an irrecoverable catatonic state, because his father bought it for him.

I have a friend whose violin cost more than his car.

Not really much more than that to add, but a 10k violin isn't anything to sneeze at.

I dunno if I'd call a $172k violin a "rare" one just going by value- most professional orchestral musicians in significant orchestras have instruments valued in excess of 100k- hell, my mom (violinist) has BOWS worth $25-30k.

Also, 100% of these people have instrument insurance. If your career is dependent on an instrument, you get in insured.

I'm mostly disturbed by the people who are so against sex with miners. I mean really, those poor fellows work hard, down there in the ground and chance death every day. Why shouldn't they be allowed to have sex?

Violins in that price range might not be rare, but a single violin from that price range could itself be rare based on where/when/by whom it was made.

I have a friend with a contrabass saxophone. It not only cost more than his car, he had to trade in on a minivan because the sax wouldn't fit. It's like 6'7" tall, it doesn't come apart, and it's totally useless outside of large gatherings of sax players.
