Not only have I not read a single one; I haven't even heard of the authors.

Just started Chuck Palahniuk's new one Damed. A bit weird but good so far. I'm with SundaesChild. Haven't heard of any of these authors either.

Same here. Guess I'm used to the Patricia Cornwells,James Pattersons,Stephen Kings and Dean Koontzes dominating best seller compilations.

The Gone Away World by Nick Harkaway.

It's a few years old now, but it's a brilliant piece of absurdist fantasy meets sci fi. Highly recommended.

Currently reading and enjoying REAMDE (page 100) by Neal Stephenson. I don't know much about MMORPGs so that's slowing me down a bit. I love Anathem so much I had to give it a shot.

Can't imagine how these "meditations" would constitute a pamphlet, let alone this.

9. Ready Player One

Got this one in my queue at the library, but it's taking forever. I may just have to break down and buy it.

I read most of 1Q84 and Ready Player One.

Both good.

Just so you can all know I approve.

Been looking forward to reading that one. I work for a paperback book manufacturer so I get lots of free books, and I was introduced to Stephenson through the free copy of Cryptonomicon I took. Then I read Anathem and Snow Crash and liked them all. I also have the Baroque Cycle books but have yet to start them as I am finishing up the Song of Fire and Ice books then I have the Kim Stanley Robinson Mars series on tap. I hope that by then we have printed REAMDE so I can get it for free.

No.

Tried too, but for some reason I can not finish, which is surprising since I have read most of his stuff, and even have Zodiac in the to-read pile. Dunno why, but it just does not grab me they way Anathem, Snow Crash, Diamond Age, Baroque Cycle, Cryptonomicon all did

Maybe my tastes have changed, or Stephenson has.

Not that I am complaining.... As long as we keep printing 500,000-1,000,000 copies at a time of their books, I keep my job

Ready Player One was good, but not great. One strange thing about the book is that it reads like a young adult novel, but in order to get most of the 1980s pop culture references you'd have to be at least in your late 20s.

Still, it was an enjoyable read.

I was disappointed by just how little happened in the book. There was a lot of scheming and maneuvering, but almost nothing got resolved.

Wow, seriously, no love for Julian Barnes?!?
not actually read this one... It's kinda supposed to be mostly a love letter to his recently dead wife, and neither my wife or I, have the fortitude just now.
He's one of my wife's fav authors... Flaubert's Parrot might be his best known or A History of the World in 10½ Chapters, both worth the time....

I seem to remember that one of the main criticisms of REAMDE when it came out was the fact that it was a straightforward plot-driven thriller coming from a guy most known for writing "big idea" type books, something that might be a turn-off for his long-time fans. Personally I loved REAMDE, especially that it had a stronger ending than some of his other works.

I wanted to like Ready Player One, but slogging through narrated infodump after narrated infodump got tiresome.

I thought 1Q84 was pretty weak. If a Murakami book can be said to be predictable, then that's what it is. I'm reading along and thinking to myself, "OK, time for a sex scene." And sure enough.

Not that I have a problem with sex scenes, of course, but I couldn't manage to give a damn about the characters. It was truly boring, and that's surprising to me as a fan of Murakami's other work.

I'd almost think some of the problems came from the translation, but Jay Rubin has done others that I liked (Wind-up Bird Chronicle, Sanshiro), so I dunno.

2011-12-23 11:06:06 PM
Andric, I liked it a good deal more, I think; I really, really liked the main view from a third character that I was not expecting.

Dunno what it's like these days, but about ten years ago when my wife subscribed for a little while it was a slightly brainier version of People with more of an emphasis on media reviews, less on celebrity crap. I'd usually find things worth reading in there. I guess it was a little too brainy for my wife, who ditched it in favor of the moronic Us Weekly.

Doubt if EW's really worth buying unless you're appetite for that kinda stuff is insatiable, since The Onion's A.V. club is better still, is widely available, and is free.

I loved reading IJ so I'm thinkin' The Pale King might be worth a look. Every reviewer professes to love this book, which might be a good sign.

Or maybe the sign of book reviewers sharing a groupthinky hive mind, I dunno.

Which was exactly why I loved it. All the political maneuvering gets me antsy. My only issue was the huge number of POV characters. Dammit GRRM.

I am currently reading War and Peace. Kindle says I'm 23% done with it.
