Churches canceling Christmas? This War on Christmas stuff is getting out of hand.

2011-12-23 03:55:59 PM
Not a church-goer, but I thought most families went to church on Christmas Eve and not Christmas Day anyway. Pretty sure that's how they did it on the Brady Bunch. And maybe The Waltons.

Here I thought Christmas falling on Sunday was like having International Beer Day fall on International Boobies Week.

2011-12-23 03:58:57 PM
well tons of people, even christians, like to spend christmas with family, not closed up in a pointless building listening to crap (for 2 or more hours, often times) they have already heard before.

/seriously, fark church.

SOo... since Jeebus was born on CHRISTmas.. and CHRISTmas is on a Sunday this year.. then we better call off any services that honor Jeebus on this holy day of CHRISTmas... That makes sense. (pass the rolls and butter pleeze)

Makes perfect sense to me. A friend of mine is a minister, and he does Christmas Eve services at 3:00, 7:00, and 11:00 PM. He doesn't get to bed until well past 1, and he's got to be back at work before 7:00 for 8:30 and 11:00 AM services the next day. Hell of a performance schedule. I'm amazed he hasn't cancelled Sunday's services, or at least the early one.

2011-12-23 04:02:38 PM
USA Today had a better article about this.

Personally I find the idea of canceling Christmas services because it's on a Sunday indicative of people seriously losing the plot when it comes to being a Christian.

I remember Christmas landing on a Sunday when I was 9 or 10. Yeah, we went to church. Probably the only thing worse is when your birthday as a kid lands on a Sunday, and you still have to go to church.

Suck it up princess. All Catholic churches do this and you won't hear them whining (in public, anyway) or canceling Mass.

Some of the big protestant churches around me don't have services on Christmas. Of course, that's because Christmas and church in general is not about Christ for them.

My aunt and uncle are pretty devout Catholics. They do afternoon and midnight mass on christmas eve, then go in for the morning mass before going back home and opening gifts.

My church is having three Christmas Eve services. We also have two services every Sunday. The only change this Sunday is that there will be only one service instead of two. I'll be there at 11pm on Saturday night (because it's Christmas Eve) and 11am on Sunday morning (because it's Sunday). We don't have a Christmas Day service when Christmas falls on any of the other six days.

I don't much care, actually. Not like I'm going to any of them. I'm just saying that it's easy to judge when all you have to do is sit and watch the performance. Actually delivering that many monologues (to say nothing of writing 2-3 different speeches in one week) is a biatch. Besides, most Catholic churches have multiple priests and can switch out, this guy doesn't get that option.

I am unsurprised. Religion no longer has the pull it used to, even among supposed Christians. Lets face it, when was the last time that you met a Christian who had a desire to give everything to the needy and live a life of suffering for god?. Lemme guess. Never. They all want to be wealthy, live in fancy houses, drive nice cars and get the social benefits of labelling themselves Christian.

Makes sense to me.

The true spirit of Christmas isn't about churches and stuff.

The true spirit of Christmas is about blowing up cans of soda in a Christmas-y way. Duh!

Yep, we were your typical white, suburban, Catholic family. We always went Christmas Eve at around 5pm. Then pizza!

Why? Is there some expectation about being completely sober at church?

We have reduced the number of morning activities down to just the service, but no one even mentioned cancelling everything. I would have a hard time attending a church that did cancel for this reason.

APE992: Here I thought Christmas falling on Sunday was like having International Beer Day fall on International Boobies Week.

Any time beer falls on boobies, it is a good thing. Especially if you are called to clean it up.

As far as the article goes, many denominations now recognize that Jesus wasn't born on December 25th anyway. The evidence, beyond the usual appropriation of pagan holidays, is in the Bible itself.

I was raised Catholic and we always went to Christmas day mass. The worst was when Christmas was a Monday because we'd go to Sunday mass and then Christmas mass.

I'm a recovering Catholic now, and being in a church makes me physically ill.

As I don't go to church, I'm not really sure. But since society's view on drinking and driving has changed since I was younger, that means I'd have to take the bus. And the bus schedule Christmas Day sucks.

The church I work at is renting space (we won't be in our own building until May) and the cost to rent the space on Christmas day is outlandish, so we aren't having church Sunday, only on Christmas Eve. The last time Christmas was on Sunday, there were approximately 25 people, including staff, that came to church.
Little Methodist church is little.

If your church is closed on Sunday, your church sucks.
Ours is open.
Will be going.
Its the reason for Christmas for crying out loud.
Well, that and it's my birthday.

I don't go to church but isn't it like, an hour? What is there to do all day on Christmas anyway? Maybe it's because I don't have a big family but I dunno. We all might go see a movie or something.

Yeah, my neighbors are apparently going to church on Christmas Eve. I didn't even know they were religious, I'm thinking they're the sort that only go on Christmas and Easter. Which is funny, if they believed there is a Christian God, do they think going those two times a year makes them even or something?

INeedAName: I'm preaching at the 4:30pm service Christmas Eve, helping at the 7 and 9pm services, attending an 11pm with my fiance, and will be worshiping at the 10am on Christmas day!

I was raised Catholic.
Christmas is a Holy Day of Obligation.
So, we opened our presents, put them away, and then went to church...er, Mass.
After Mass, we changed and left for relatives none of us kids wanted to see.
We'd get home from that and go to bed.
By the time we got up the next morning, our toys were out of style.

This year, I plan to wake up Christmas morning naked and hungover with a candy cane sticking out of my ass.

2011-12-23 05:00:34 PM
The Episcopal church I go to doesn't have services on Christmas Day no matter what day it falls on.

2011-12-23 05:02:36 PM
Our UMC was not planning on having anything after the Christmas Eve 11 pm service, and I mean nothing until January 1, 2012. And it was apparently with the blessing of our district supervisor and bishop. That is, until word went up the chain that more than a few of us would be attending other churches in the area, and giving our usual tithes and offerings to those congregations. Amazingly, we are now having one service on Christmas Day, and Watch Night on New Year's Eve, as well as our regular three sessions on January 1.

Money talks, but it can't sing and dance
