I was watching a bit of Batman Forever last night. God, that was so 90s. While I don't necessarily hate it, it does make me appreciate the Nolan movies that much more.

And Batman and Robin makes me appreciate Batman Forever more. Not that I've seen either in a decade. Forever wasn't terrible if you can accept going in that it's supposed to be campy and a little gay (nttawwt). Although they really cocked up Two-Face and I think Tommy Lee Jones could have done a good job with it if he was given a decent script and direction.

Batman and Robin was miserable on every level. Except I think I remember Alicia Silverstone in some kind of school girl uniform.

...whatever happened to Alicia Silverstone anyway? Did B&R completely kill her career? Doesn't seem fair, everyone else got out unscathed, even the fudge packer director (nttawwt).

Even though it's not a Batman graphic novel (which is almost definitely why it's not included), infographic needs to have the batman suit from "Red Son" added because of Russian batman and his fabulous hat.

Whenever I think of Batman Forever, I think of at the end when they've arrived at the Riddler's island hideout, and Robin says "Holy rusted metal, Batman!" and Batman gives him this wtf response, and Robin goes, "The ground, it's metal, all rusted over and full of holes." Thought it was a nice reference to Batman's really cheesy past.

Trebuchet-Farker: List fails without Victorian era "Gotham by Gaslight" Batman.

I forgot that one, I think I still have it, that was a cool one.

What about Digital Justice

upload.wikimedia.org

The first all computer generated comic, rendered on an 8 bit Mac II with 8 mb of RAM. Woo hoo! Although I guess the suit is roughly the same except he had glowing green eyes.

I can only assume that AzBat was designed to be a parody of 90s super heroes, random pouches and all. That suit really hasn't aged well, although the final revision was a little better.

No 1970s Neal Adams Batman? Without it, this is a pretty poor collection of "significant" Batman looks.

I used to have that...it was terrible. The artwork was so pixelated it looked like LEGO Batman, the story was dumb, and despite spending so long putting the thing together, they ended up using a bunch of recycled panels anyway.

The whole premise was "yeah, we spent more than a year doing this on a computer when any competent artist could have produced a superior version in a month...but it's digital. Digital is cool, right?" A classic example of caring more about the method that the product.

/wasted my allowance on it

Seeing how the suit was made in the 90s (...94 maybe?), I don't think there was much parody involved.

JSA Liberty Files has an awesome batman, though he uses a gun so some ignorant purists deride him instantly. Russian Batman was awesome, but goddamn Midnighter would beat the hell out of all of them. Also, Racist Marvel Batman Analog or Nighthawk has his moments, but I'll never forgive Gary Frank for leaving like that. Redstone just boiled a pool full of people and the cavalry has arrived... queue terrible series followup with less sense, worse characters, just HORRENDOUS art.. :(

It... wasnt a parody. It was meant to be a new batman for the 90s, they made a new suit, put a new guy in it, one who didnt have bruce waynes silly moral code. It was DCs answer to wolverines explosive popularity, right down to the blue and yellow and the claws. And it failed miserably. Everything about that run was poorly thought out. Which really makes me nervous for Bane in the new movie...

MoMA in New York had a great superhero exhibit a few years back which included three or four of the film Batman suits (along with Christopher Reeve's Superman outfit and Lynda Carter's Wonderwoman getup). Great show.

It always seemed to me like that story arc was meant to explore the downsides of those morally ambiguous 90s antiheroes. From the beginning they set up AzBats as having some serious issues, so it really seemed like the whole idea was for the writers to show how Batman was a better hero than Wolverine or Spawn due to his moral code. Since the whole story arc was set up from the beginning to explore what it would be like if Batman went down that path without making Bruce kill someone, It really seems like they purposely made the costume a little crappy so that everyone would be happy to see the new trunkless Batman costume when Bruce returned for good after Dick's first tenure under the cowl. The execution was lacking overall, but I don't think they ever seriously expected to replace the classic costume with the new one that was all armor, claws, and pouches.

Youre giving them too much credit. They dumped Azbat because of fan backlash to the whole thing. From Wikipedia:

In an interview with Dennis O'Neill, the writer stated that part of the reason "Knightfall" was written was due to the recent popularity of more "ruthless" heroes such as the Terminator and James Bond in films, as editors were starting to wonder if readers would prefer a Batman who was willing to kill his opponents; the subsequent response to Jean Paul Valley's Batman proved this not to be the case.

I always thought that Bane's parts of Knightfall were good, it's the Jean-Paul Valley, Extreme Gritty Angry Catholic Batman Maxx, which sucked (and Bruce's recovery, that kinda sucked - until Lady Shiva turned up).

No idea how Bane's going to turn out in the movie.

I'm giving Nolan the benefit of the doubt on this one. When I found out that Bale was going to be Batman, I feared. I was wrong. When I found out that Heath Ledger was going to be Joker, I feared again. I was wrong again.
