I distinctly remember an episode of Voyager where they use the transporter to do a Caesarian.

Suppose we scooped out the insides of this child and replaced it with the nervous system of an organlegger?

Fair enough, say I set up a mirror on the moon so I can bounce a laser beam into someone's locked hotel room and boil them in their bath?

To be fair, the last one is fair.

Science fiction novels have been doing a grand job updating the ways to kill one another. Relativistic weapons. Kinetic kill devices that will plow under entire planets. Wormhole devices that extinguish entire solar systems. Nanotech that devours entire worlds. Viruses and memes that co-opt the nervous systems to create new thought patterns negating the need to actually fight and die. Energy weapons that disrupt the nervous system. Mono-molecular shards that spit and slice. Bioweapons that corrupt the genetic code.

Give Star Trek credit with the use of the Genesis Device for being an inventive way of destroying a world, at least.

2011-12-23 04:25:13 PM
Wow, that was stupid. Except for the weapons one I suppose. But simply pressing a button and beaming someone into a pile of goo does not make good cinema like a blaster fight or lightsaber duel.

You can thank Kirk's pussy son for that. I don't know why Doc Brown wanted it so much, to him it was just a bomb to blow up a planet. We pretty much have that now.

So the invention of new methods of death and destruction renders things like knives and guns moot? A knife will still kill a person in the 24th Century

Star Wars is a Science Fantasy. A fairy tale. Thus it is bound by the rules of romanticism, not science.

Padme died due to symbolic nature of the story, not to any real "medical" reason. Anakins commitment to the Dark Side destroyed and devoured everything that made him human, both physically and spiritually.

Lucas attempted to drive that home with the Doc Bot not being able to find anything wrong. Even with a sledgehammer people missed the point.

To be fair, we had been through about seven hours of hating Jake Lloyd, Jar Jar and Hayden Christensen by then, we were bound not to be in our right minds.

Yeah, I felt the sledgehammer on the point. But, still. It was a stupid way to kill Padme off. I mean, she commits suicide by willing herself to die and leaving two orphans to fend for themselves? Because her husband turned out to be an asshole? She just didn't seem like that kind of girl. Plus, she had been so responsible and devoted to her people and then just says "Ah, to hell with this, I'm outta here."

Also, I can't believe I just posted this. I had to grind my teeth to make it through that movie. And on top of the TMJ cramping I developed, I also got eye strain from rolling my eyes every 30 seconds.

She didn't commit suicide. Her soul-mate became absolutely corrupted and tore her "heart" out. If he did that literally, it would have had the same effect. In fairy tales, symbolic reasons are accepted motif for death (See Han Christian Anderson original Little Mermaid)

She held on long enough to give birth to the positive part of their love...their children (which Anakin desperately wanted) with the comment- "there is still good in him". Vader believed he destroyed everything he loved. Luke and Leia existence shows that the Dark Side cannot destroy everything .

As for her actions, Sith had gained enough power that the Jedi's were acting foolishly and politicians acted cowardly. Padme was worried for the future of her marriage, culture and kids.

My biggest disappointment was that Lucas didn't include Padme at the end of the ROTJ.

The article sucks and misses the point. I think Gene Roddenberry said it best when asked why Picard is bald- his response was that in the future, humanity would have advanced enough to the point where people simply wouldn't care.

Right. We achieve world peace, no religion, no currency, no greed and every other instinct man has had since he crawled out of the soup. Fine. But chicks don't care if a guy is bald, even if he's not cut like Jason Statham? Suspension of disbelief only goes so far.

I don't understand the insecurity that surrounds hair loss. Then again, based on my genetics, I probably will never lose my hair either, so I probably will never understand.

Lists about sci-fi and "future" tech annoy me when they mention Star Wars. Star Wars was set a long time ago in a galaxy far away.

For example, #4 was stupid. Padme dying in childbirth of, basically, a broken heart. I know that sounds stupid and cliche, but... her husband just went on a big giant killing spree, including children, as he became Darth farking Vader. She basically commit suicide by thinking about it hard enough. So, yes, Star Wars tech is "better" than our tech, but that had nothing to do with Padme's death. Besides that, I don't see any reason why tech should fix uncomfortable gestation... I can understand fixing uncomfortable childbirth, but we've pretty much got that.. but the rest of the pregnancy... not quite.

Why? Do you hate yourself or something? Holy snotballs, but that movie was shiat. Every plot point as delivered with the grace and subtlety of a steal-toed boot to the yambag.

I get that, I really do. But why portray this character as the face of ferocious female courage and determination and then have her totally wimp out because her heart was broken? Better to have her as an emotional little princess-bride, than a warrior and statesman with the guts to face a thousand deaths. But I get it. We can only bend gender roles so far before we must return to old fashioned motifs.

No. No we don't

We have the ability to probably destroy most life, and destroy modern culture. But life will persist and the planet itself will not cease to exists. Humanity would probably survive, just not as the technology era.

The devices in movies literally have the power and energy to blow a planet to bits. It's questionable if the suns red giant phase even has the energy to do so.

Mugato: I'm a SW geek and even I find that pedantic.

Pedantic? It's the first thing that came on screen at the beginning of the first movie. The point of using that setting is to not limit yourself to modern or ancient tech while also not limiting yourself to "this is what I think the future is". That goes for both SW and BSG. On BSG, you get spaceships, but you get crude whisky stills, ball-point pens, and paper with the corners cut off. Pedantic is biatching about the way SW spaceships maneuver in space.

Especially when you consider how she got knocked up to begin with :

Anakin : I killed them. I killed them all. They're dead, every single one of them. And not just the men, but the women and the children, too. They're like animals, and I slaughtered them like animals. I HATE THEM !

Padme : Genocide gets me soooo hot. TAKE ME NOW !

One thing that almost never shows up that should in Sci-Fi shows/movies is modern music. Evidently in the future all rock/jazz/blues/country/etc music has been destroyed, and the only thing left is classical.

/Notable exceptions: Cowboy Bebop, Star Wars (Tatooine only).

Yeah, life spans have not increased in Star Trek. That's why McCoy was 137 in the TNG premiere.

The thing that kills me about that is you have medical robots and space travel and no one bothered to notice that she was having twins in the 9 months she was pregnant. Apparently sonograms come after FTL travel in the tech tree.
