But but ... I thought Craiglists was only for hookers? Is "Selling a Watch" now code word for male prostitution?

Whenever I buy or sell anything on CL, I make sure to schedule to meet the other party at the doughnut or coffee shop or diner nearest the police precinct of their choice. And I make sure to point out this is so we can both be assured neither one of us are there to rip off the other. If the person refuses, I don't bother with them anymore.

People sure are stupid about how they arrange high value transactions with strangers.

Don't go alone.
Don't go anywhere too private (in front of a police station is a good choice).
If possible, don't go unarmed.
Don't get into anyone else's vehicle.
Don't be afraid to walk away if something doesn't seem right.

Why do people even screw around with Craigslist if not for illegal activity? Everything about it and the people who use it is just skeevy. At least with eBay I don't have to meet the people I do transactions with.

Craigslist is quite classy compared to backpage.

I do the same thing and carry a pistol. Too many desperate nuts out there.

Because I like to try out cars before I buy them? (And I can't afford dealer prices)

eBay has buyer protection out the wazoo for used cars... and are usually cheaper than cars on CL.

True Story: I was working at a clothing store in West Dundee (right next to Carpentersville) when a woman wanted to return something. I gave her the form to fill out and under city she wrote "c-ville".

The worst scams I've gotten on CL follow:

"I don't have any money. Can you front it to me? You know I'm good for it." -said to me after I arrived and we agreed on a price.

"My son just checked and said these are going for more than we agreed on..I want fifty more dolla. No? Get the hell out you farker for wasting my time!"

"Yeah this PS2 works. See its hooked in. No you can't see it in action. Oh the power and av cord are an extra $30."

Wow, that sucks... I'm used to getting jerked around by email by actual scammers on Craigslst, but getting dicked in person after you show up, that's ballsy.

Not to mention, being a dick when you're the seller? That's not ballsy, that's stupid.

If the seller wants to meet at somewhere other then their house then it is safe to assume they are trying to sell something broken/stolen.

You go to their place and it turns out to be an apartment building, you call and they say they will "come down to meet you," don't bother.

Also, when you put "Price is FIRM!" in the ad and buyers still try to dick you down.

CL just sucks in general, really bad interface both for posting ads and finding ads. Would boolean search be so hard? Searching for ads within x Km of your postal/zip code? How about being able to upload multiple images at once instead of clicking on each one? Templates for new ads?

fark those lazy bastards, I only use kijiji (yahoo classifieds in USA) now.

Or they don't want some psycho knowing where they live. They don't know any more about you than you do about them.

This is why meeting in front of a police station is a good idea.

So I spend $300 on an iPhone from you, then when I get home it turns out that it randomly turns off or that the charging connector doesn't quite work. What recourse do I have?

Very little. Perhaps you should make arrangements that would allow you to check those things before you buy.

Tell me, what recourse I would have if I sold you an IPhone from my home and it provided you a chance to case my domicile so you could come back later to rob and maybe even kill me?

Those are not the kind of things you can check before you buy. If I want to case your house, there are better ways of doing so. I can look in the window when noone is home, knock on the door and ask to use the washroom if you are home. Besides, if you have a nice house, chances are you have nice stuff inside, it isn't exactly rocket science. Murder? That's just silly.

I disagree, but how about this: What if I know that the IPhone is fine but I don't want take the chance that some idiot buys it, breaks it, and decides he wants to come back and get some "recourse" out of me?

There are plenty of legitimate reasons to not want some internet stranger who happens to be buying something from you knowing where you live. Assume what you like though.

I've been selling stuff on the internet from my house since 1998, my old posts are still on usenet archives of tor.forsale I've never had someone even yell at me on the phone. I've sold things I didn't know were broken since I couldn't test them, I've told people that I won't accept a return on something as it's been over a month since they bought it. People are reasonable about these things. I'm sure there are some psychos out there, but you can't live life thinking everyone is a psycho.
