It would have been totally cool if Steve Jobs got the GUI from Xerox's ASS.

I can't wait for the insane media flurry over Goldman's death as well. Just like when Dennis Ritchie died.

It would be closer to say they paid for the concept. Xerox received stock in Apple for the technology. And it was rather basic concepts. Xerox hadn't developed the concept of overlapping windows, scrollbars that didn't suck, and numerous other inventions to make it - ya know - usable.

/and many of the Xerox researchers eventually went to work for Apple as Xerox didn't have a clue what to do with it

To be fair, it took Apple a long time to develop scrollbars that didn't suck

First, Well done, Subby. That works on many levels.

Second, people who think that Apple copied the Alto interface that they were shown by Xerox (in return for being allowed to purchase Apple stock before the IPO) have never even seen the Alto interface.

It had a command line, people. It never even showed graphics until you were inside a program that supported graphics. Even then you still frequently used keyboard commands to drive the software when you were inside it.

Here, download the Alto manual and look it over yourself.

Apple's interface was definitely inspired by the Alto's advancements over what had existed before (SRI's NLS was the first machine with a mouse and menus and such) however it was anything but a direct copy.
