As hospital officials began palliative care and broached the subject of organ donation with his family, Schmid began to respond, holding up two fingers on command.

In Massachusetts a few years ago a girl was in a persistent vegetative state due to abuse. There was an argument over whether to keep her on life support. The state supreme court finally said, pull the plug. As soon as the ruling came down she got better.

They are truly withholding food from a person who is awake, alert, and can eat and swallow. ~ Dr. William Hammesfahr

To enter the room of Terri Schiavo is nothing like entering the room of a patient who is comatose or brain-dead or in some neurological sense no longer there. ~ Dr. William Polk Cheshire Jr.

As I looked at Terri, and she gazed directly back at me, I asked myself whether, if I were her attending physician, I could in good conscience withdraw her feeding and hydration. No, I could not. I could not withdraw life support if I were asked. I could not withhold life-sustaining nutrition and hydration from this beautiful lady whose face brightens in the presence of others. ~ Dr. William Polk Cheshire Jr.

For days Schmid didn't seem to be responding, but what puzzled his doctor was that he did not see fatal injuries on the MRI scan. So he decided to keep Schmid on life support longer.

"There was plenty wrong -- he had a hemorrhage, an aneurysm and a stroke from the part of the aneurysm," Spetzler said. "But he didn't have a blood clot in the most vital part of his brain, which we know he can't recover from. And he didn't have a massive stroke that would predict no chance of a useful existence."

So while the family was given a realistic picture of Schmid's poor chances for survival, Spetzler ordered one more MRI to see if the critical areas of the brain had turned dark, indicating brain death.

"If not, we would hang on and keep him on support," he said. "But I didn't want to give the family false hope."

Schmid's mother said no one "specifically" asked if her son would be a donor, but they "subtly talk to you about quality of life."

"At some point, I knew we had to make some sort of decision, and I kept praying," said Regan.

The MRI came back with encouraging news during the day and by evening Schmid "inexplicably" followed the doctors' commands, holding up two fingers. ~Susan Donaldson James

In other words, Schiavo was brain dead. This kid wasn't. MRIs confirmed.

Interesting since it is a medical fact that she was a brainless vegetable.
You know what facts are, right ? here's another example: the existence of cumulative changes in the relative frequencies of variant genetic alleles in a gene pool which occurs over the course of generations, AKA Evolution.

Do they seriously just... not even test to see if there's brain function these days with anything beyond 'well, we poked him and nothing happened'?

Reason I ask: my dad in law recently passed, but several months before he did, he'd gone into a coma. They got him to a hospital, where the doctors immediately started trying to convince my mom in law he was braindead and they should be pulling the plug. She asked if there was any brain function - they said no. She asked how they knew - they said they'd tried to stick him with a needle and he didn't respond. She asked if they would be doing any sort of scans and they insisted it wasn't necessary - he was gone.

She was completely torn apart, freaking out and calling family and trying to decide what to do when he woke up... literally less than an hour after they insisted he was a vegetable. He was talking and walking and eating like nothing had ever happened shortly after. He said he even vaguely remembered hearing everyone talking and just being unable to respond and being so frustrated he finally just broke through the fog through shear force of will.

He slipped away again some months later and we kept him around for weeks and weeks, not trusting what the doctors said about him being gone. The doctors had given up on him though, and to this day I fear he may well have been completely aware until mom in law finally made the decision to let him go, and he was just slipping farther because the doctors wouldn't do anything beyond the most basic stuff to keep him breathing. :/

And people wonder why so many don't trust the medical field...
