List is not complete without GOLDFINGER.

I don't mind a slide show so long as it doesn't reload the whole damn page. This one is fine.

You know, for a 50 film list, there isn't much there that I disagree with.

2011-12-23 09:20:44 AM
Good list but I'd like to add "Three Days of the Condor" to it. It was a much tighter story than the original "Six Days of the Condor" and the developing relationship between Dunaway's character and Redford's character is A LOT more believable.

Still, I can't hate on James Grady too much. It was his first novel, and he did a better job of developing the "mystique" of the CIA in the book.

2011-12-23 10:16:52 AM
From the list, I've seen Forrest Gump, Princess Bride, Jaws, Psycho, and Gone with the Wind.

/I should see more movies that aren't comic book or sci-fi based.

2011-12-23 10:20:52 AM
Just so Jaws in on there. And Fight Club. The Forrest Gump book is actually worse than the film? Wow.

2011-12-23 10:36:25 AM
No love for Shawshank, eh?

2011-12-23 10:41:51 AM
I have to disagree on Last of the Mohicans, but then I'm a big fan of historically based novels that are rich in description of both the people and their surroundings. Also, the book and the film of Breakfast at Tiffany's are two very different creatures. I had watched and enjoyed the film for a long time before reading the novella, but after that I finally got all the things Capote was saying that were either glossed over or only hinted at in the film.

2011-12-23 10:47:05 AM
Came for Fight Club, leaving satisfied.

2011-12-23 10:50:52 AM
If anyone complains that Starship Troopers isn't on there, I will hunt you down like Obama going after Osama bin Laden.

2011-12-23 11:00:22 AM
What? No Planet of the Apes? Seriously?

And I'm glad Blade Runner was on there. The POS book it's based on should be banned from the entire planet. Phillip K. Dick should've been kicked in his last name for writing that crap.

And apparently the author of that list never read A Clockwork Orange. He needs a bit of the old dirty twenty-to-one.

2011-12-23 11:02:51 AM
I'd say The Shining but I also don't want to get into a whole thing about it.

2011-12-23 11:03:36 AM
Very good list, but could have used an editor & fact-checker. #36: Jason Robards as the narrator of The Princess Bride? Makes me want to poke out my eye. #33: Hawkeye is not a Mohican himself; he's an ass-kicking paleface. #23 Cuckoo's Nest -- nobody calls him Randle except Nurse Ratched, he's McMurphy (not MacMurphy). I didn't count them up, but seemed like Fincher and Kubrick got the most mentions.

2011-12-23 11:03:58 AM
Wow, I've seen 50% of those, and read at least 20%. That never happens on lists like this.

2011-12-23 11:10:42 AM
I tried to read Trainspotting. I got hooked on heroin just trying to get through it.

2011-12-23 12:07:56 PM
The move "A Clockwork Orange" is in no way better than the book.

But, overall, that's a pretty decent list.

HeadKase: No love for Shawshank, eh?

The book was far better than the movie (though the movie was indeed excellent).

HeadKase: No love for Shawshank, eh?

Shawshank isn't a book unto itself.

"There are nineteen rules governing literary art in domain of romantic fiction -- some say twenty-two. In "Deerslayer," Cooper violated eighteen of them."

Yes, yes, it's a different novel.

I wouldn't say it was better or worse, just so completely different from the book that there was barely any reason to call it ST at all.

2011-12-23 02:09:58 PM
Shutter Island? That book must be shiat.

2011-12-23 02:10:13 PM
...same with Blade Runner.

2011-12-23 02:11:28 PM
I'm gonna disagree on Shutter Island, but only because I really, REALLY like the book; the audibook read by Tom Stechschulte (Gesundheit.) specifically. It's absolutely heart-rending. Don't get me wrong, the movie is fantastic, and I agree that it's one of Leo's best performances, but I just love that book too damn much.

The Innocents is one of my favorite movies ever. The end.

Dead for Tax Reasons: battlefield earth better be on there

I'd call this a tie as I couldn't stomach either version.

"But, let's face it: The kids in Let The Right One In are rather dull, unlike Let Me In's Kodi-Smit McPhee and Chloe Moretz, both of whom give outstanding, multifaceted performances."

Yeah, no. Richard Jenkins was the only upgrade in the new one, in my opinion.

Bukharin: mamoru: The move "A Clockwork Orange" is in no way better than the book.

I'm not the type of guy who likes rape to the point that I'd say it twice, but the rape scenes in that movie are pretty farking hot.

/damn, I said "rape" twice.

There are lots of movies, like Kubrick's Shining, which are like that.

Am I the only one who thought that particular part pretty much ignored the book in favor of comparing both versions of the movie?

I love both the book and the film of L.A. Confidential. The film managed to streamline the multiple plots and red herrings into a single neat package for a two hour film, but Jack Vincentes in the book was a far more tragic character.

I have to say I love Dahsell Hammett movies, but his books are as dry as dust.

I dunno...I really enjoy Maltese Falcon, both as literature and cinema, with Lit edging out cinema by a hair. There's just something about the book that gets me going every time.

2011-12-23 02:22:57 PM
While it is not better than the book. The 1984 John Hurt version of 1984 is a solid representation of the book.

It's also the most terrifying movie ever made.

2011-12-23 02:24:24 PM
Wait....Jason Robards played the grandfather in Princess Bride?

What movie have I been watching? The one with Columbo playing the grandad?

Or was this once again BS editing and writing?

No, that's pretty much what they did. Also:

"An American horror remake that's better than its foreign predecessor? We're just as shocked by the possibility as you most likely are about our opinion."

Ugh. Things that I don't agree with don't shock me. I just think they're wrong.

I liked the addition of Elias Koteas' character. But that could just be me enjoying Elias Koteas.

Humean_Nature: Came for Fight Club, leaving satisfied.

The movie follows the book rather closely, up until the end, which the book does better IMO.

I'm a bit surprised to not see Minority Report on this.. the short story is quite good in its own right, but the movie takes the premise and actually does a better job with it.

Also surprised to see the Shining on the list, though I do agree that it belongs there.

I will have to disagree with the Shinning. Kubrick's movie was boring as hell. I don't know what is up with all the cock sucking that guy does but I have a hard time finding his movies entertaining.

Because he dropped basically...oh, 90% of the history of the hotel and its owners in favor of...um...killing Scatman Crothers? Adding a hedge maze? Something.

Well, the book is a disturbing piece of fascist propaganda. The film is a hysterical send-up of fascist propaganda, which I found a delicious poke-in-the-eye to Heinlein's reactionary political leanings.
