Almost as cool as my MBP.

And for a lot less........

Very nice indeed.
But since I am left handed, I actually tend to use the numpad or arrow keys for movement in games rather than the ASWD keys. I suppose I could program the keypad on the right for it, but something tells me it would not work that well.

Moving the trackpad from the bottom to the side is a great idea. Is this a first, or am I just not up on my laptop tech?

It might be a cool laptop - but you'd be hard press to find a 2.8k laptop these days that isn't bad ass. But the claim that it's the 'First True Gaming Laptop' is just utter b.s.

Every 3-4 months there is a new 'best' gaming laptop. Hell, it's probably less than that. This laptop is no more a gaming laptop than any of the others. All of the well known high-end/performance/gaming retailers have been selling gaming laptops for years. I know Alienware has been selling them for at least a decade or so.

The LCD trackpad/buttons is pretty neat but good luck finding a game that natively supports it. Reprogramming it for every game seems like a real chore and really a "true gamer" shouldn't have too much difficulties remembering which commands are bound to F1-F10

Yep same here.

Lately I've been programing movement keys to J K L and I, putting the index finger on the bump of J. And I put action keys at BNM and other nearby keys. Might want to give it a try.

Alienware sells a laptop with 32Gb of DDR3 and a 2Gb Nvidia GTX 580M for $800 less.
It is "touted" as "the most powerful laptop in the universe". Overclocked to 4.0GHz it puts the Razor Blade to shame.

Those are huge ass hell
/Funny thing is this is 1k cheaper for the same spec'd MBP

Why would they skimp on the screen? 1200 lines of resolution in a 17 inch laptop used to be pretty common. Now its hard to find except for Macbook Pro.

I bought Link (this) a few years ago when I knew I would be moving around a lot. It would be a total pain to try to move with a desktop, monitor, keyboard, etc.

That is the only good use for these kind of laptops. Generally, they are slower, less capable, and much more expensive than a similar desktop.

I feel that it was money well spent, but there is no way I'm getting another "gaming" laptop in the future once I'm done moving to the other side of the country a few times a year. I'll probably build a mid to high spec pc for half of what I paid for the laptop back in the day once I'm done school.

my 2009 Studio XPS 16 seems to handle everything I throw at it.

The undersized power supply was replaced under warranty, and I did some minor case modifications to facilitate better cooling, i.e.: more ventilation holes.

I wonder how hot the Razor Blade gets sitting on a blanket?

drjekel_mrhyde: /Funny thing is this is 1k cheaper for the same spec'd MBP

Except you can't spec a 17" MBP to match.

The MBP has a screen with a higher native resolution, and it comes with the Quad-Core vs the Razer's Dual Core i7, and the Razer has no indication (in either specs or pictures) that it has an Optical Drive or built in speakers. The Razer also states that it has HDMI out, but says nothing about if that allows for a dual monitor setup, like the MBP has or just mirroring (or worse, one or the other), and lacks Thunderbolt.

The Razer, to it's credit, is .1 inches thinner than the 17" MBP and weighs the same, but more than an inch wider (I think it's more about that keyboard than the .3" larger screen). It also has more dedicated memory for the Graphics Card.

I don't know how the AMD Radeon HD 6770M in the MBP stacks up against the NVidia GT 555M, but I'm sure it has the edge there.

But in short, it doesn't cost $1k less than a MBP specced the same, it costs Less than MBP specced and equipped very differently.

Sounds awesome except... only a single 256gb SSD? That's so little storage these days.

2011-12-23 02:15:44 PM
I'm sorry, a "real gaming laptop" wouldn't have a 1920x1080 resolution, it would have a 1920x1200 resolution. 1920x1080 is a media resolution, not an optimal gaming resolution.

2011-12-23 02:17:23 PM
This again? Overpriced, hyped, and kinda boring in the stats department. Sure it LOOKS cool, but I'd be more interested in seeing that touchscreen pad as a peripheral device.

NobleHam: Sounds awesome except... only a single 256gb SSD? That's so little storage these days.

That's a pretty big SSD, and a quick search shows prices between $300 and $500 for a bare SSD of that size.

They're missing the most important spec: how many fans, how well they work, and how god damn noisy they are.

My Acer 3820TG plays Skyrim just fine, thank you very much. And it cost about $900 - a year ago.

2011-12-23 02:42:16 PM
My MSI GT683-R giggles at their shenanigans.

GeForce GT 555M? I'll keep my GTX 560M, thanks. If anything I'd like to have the GTX 570M that MSI put into the second-round refresh of this machine. I'm guessing the only thing I'd need to change is the ship itself (and update the BIOS) - same chassis and heatsinks IIRC.

That Razer lappy likely has MUCH higher build quality than mine, but as for gaming? Mine's better. :p

It doesn't have a numpad for playing Dwarf Fortress. Therefore it is inadequate.

I'm also left-handed. I use WASD. I tried using my left hand for the mouse but it felt really weird. I don't get you.

2011-12-23 03:01:53 PM
A numeric keypad would be 10 times more useful on a gaming laptop than that touchpad thingee. You don't need it often for gaming, but when you do, it's a pain when it's not there.

rosemary's baby daddy: I can't afford this so whoever can has a tiny penis and/or needs to be killed in a revolution. Do I fit in yet?

There is an assumption that rich people deserve the money they have. Generally, at least in our culture, we like to think that rich people are either hard workers or have some competitive edge (smart, strong, etc). Hard workers should understand value, and the archetype of a successful individual has at least the three brain cells needed to understand the ripoff this crap laptop is.

When rich people do stupid shiat with money it makes us realize the accumulation of wealth and power has little to nothing to do with the concept of the American Dream we have been sold since we were born.

So yeah, we like to point out stupid people with money. It makes us poor dumb lazy unwashed masses cope with reality.

So just leave us to it eh?

Why is a Laptop that's advertised as being for gaming in possession of an integrated graphics card...?
Oh. It has a dedicated and integrated? What's the point of that?

2011-12-23 04:04:06 PM
Seth'n'Spectrum: They're missing the most important spec: how many fans, how well they work, and how god damn noisy they are.

My thoughts exactly. Only the noise they make is secondary to it being structurally impossible to have adequate cooling at all in something like that. If you want thin and portable, you sacrifice air flow. That's always been the main problem with 'gaming laptops'.

Hope it has a 5 year unlimited warranty, otherwise you're just paying for something that destroys itself a little every time you play a game. I give it 6 months of heavy usage, tops, before it's cooked.

Clowns are a Ten: Oh. It has a dedicated and integrated? What's the point of that?

So when you bring it to work or class it can get longer battery life. My laptop has that feature and I can get about 4 hours out of it unplugged. Plugged in, I can play all of the new releases on medium-high settings.

It's a very nice laptop, but I bought something akin to that six months ago for $2000.

GTX 560M, 120 GB SSD, 500 GB HD with 64 MB Fast Flash Memory, 8 GB Ram, i7-2630QM, 17 inch Screen. I also love the full size keyboard. Only issue is that the BIOS is locked.

So... fark?

For those of you that are used to WASD movement...try switching to ESDF. Feels the same but opens up a bunch of action keybinds to the left. I recently tried it and love it. Seriously, just give it a shot.

Evil Kirk vs Bad Ash: And my 6 year old $200 xbox 360 does just as good.

My first game boy would do far better then your xbox360 in comparison to what this laptop could do. For one it could actually display what you're doing and work beyond being within '6 of a wall socket.

Since we are in a computer thread I will just ask this. I got This (new window) for Christmas instead of the 1TB external hard drive that I wanted, and it was bought off amazon and returning isn't an option. I have heard though that you can put desktop hard drives in an enclosure type thing and basically turn it into an external hard drive. If so, where would I find such an enclosure? (A link would be helpful)

2011-12-24 01:14:08 AM
Dr J Zoidberg : Try typing "sata hard drive enclosure 3.5" in the search box on that Amazon page you linked. ;)

BTW, in my experience, you get what you pay for with enclosures. Worth checking the reviews.

2011-12-24 01:44:39 AM
Dr J Zoidberg:

You're looking for a USB hard drive enclosure. I used one for a while when I was had left over hard drives and a laptop. Be warned they are a little less shock resilient than your typical external hdd.

Other then that they work just fine.

It looks nice, but the 1st gaming laptop? not by a long shot, not even then best gaming laptop out. Although it is pretty light, I like mine very much. not quite as powerful, but a shaitload less expensive, and i have yet to find a game i cant play at full graphics setting.(no i dont play crisis)

I'm right handed and I can't use WASD because my middle finger doesn't bend that way.

Pisses me off to no end when I see an interesting game and then can't play it because you can't reconfigure the keys. (Q3L was the first.)
