I always thought the answer was Slurm.

I must make this! Heck it might even be good enough to get Mrs Sapper in the mood!

Or you could be like me and live in Florida, where it's in the 80s. Sheeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiiit.

I heard that story yesterday on the drive home, and bought some cheap booze to try it. Sounded tasty.

Winter? It was in the 50s in NYC yesterday.

A hot mulled wine recipe which is similar to this has been in my family for generations. It is indeed delicious, but maybe I'll mix it up this year and do glogg instead.

Sounds complicated. 90 proof peppermint schnapps gets the job done without being a pain in the ass.

It's 50 degrees in downstate New York today...

Glögg. Pronounced "Glewg"

Good shiat, though. I buy a bottle of the nonalcoholic premade stuff and add a shot of vodak to it. Perfect drink for Christmas. Actually, I think I'll stop by BevMo today and see if they have any.

I'm Michigan and it's supposed to be in the mid 50's for Christmas so what's this icy grip the op talks about?

FYI: It's going to be sunny and 74F in SoCal on Christmas Day. At least the Santa Ana winds are good for something.

Aquavit with glug! GOOOD idea!

Gotta go warn the wife now that I may be hurting in the morning...

I got the flu at a glögg party when I was in high school. I spent the next 24 hours on my knees saying glööööööööögg to the porcelain Norse gods.

Hope this was a cool story.

Glugg... Good stuff. (I guess some folks calls it a glogg(er blade). Uh huh...)

It is a good drink for hunting camp. Later, after you've been glugged, you can sleep for a couple of hours and then go out and do it all again. And the ladies wonder why nobody shoots a deer at deer camp...

WTFDYW: I stopped reading the instructions at the word 'raisons'.

I stopped reading your post when you misspelled "raisins".

/to be fair, that was the end of the post, so I was going to stop reading it at that point, anyway
//maybe you're snarking on an NPR typo that they already fixed -- I did do a find-in-page for "raisons" and it didn't show up

Most of the glogg I've had has been heavier on the vodka. 1/2 bottle wine, 1/2 bottle vodka. You will be feeling "festive" after a few mugs!

Mulled wine wih extras. Sounds awesome.

Glühwein? (It's similar to glögg)

I visited Rostocker Weihnachtsmarkt (The christmas market in Rostock) a couple of years ago. There they had stands that sold glühwein, glögg and schwedentrunk. Good times.

Great stuff. But it sneaks up on you kind of like saki - "I could drink a lot of this" ..... bombed

Ahh Glogg..Who needs things like non-freezing weather or a decent climate when you have a wee bottle of Glogg to get you through?

and to find the finest Glogg made in this wide world, simply look for the sign of the neon viking fish:

Cuthbert Allgood: if I can pry myself away from the Xbox

That will be my challenge today, as well. Too many good games to play. Nice login, BTW. I'm looking forward to the new DT novel next year.

I live in a northern climate. North Dakota is about as nothern and cold as you can imagine. But last week it was 55. suck it.

As a kid my dad always brought a wineskin of this when we went out skiing. A couple of sips did a great job of warming you up! I still make it every couple of years. I think that this will now be one of those years.

2011-12-23 12:04:32 PM
Two tips:

1. Don't use any fancy wines or liquors in this. The cheap stuff will do fine.

2. Only use aquavit if you must -- this is what led to the Berserker tradition.

Yeah, it seems like a lot of work to go through to get drunk. But that is not the whole purpose of it. It is like Christmas cookies...if you just want cookies, go buy a box of Archway. But making home made cookies, a nice butter cream frosting, and decorating them yourself makes the whole experience more rewarding. Plus it makes the house smell really good. Same with glogg, except cookies don't make you stupidly drunk. Make glogg the week before Christmas one time, and I guarantee you that it will not really seem like Christmas ever again until you smell it on the stove.

/There is a reason why the sound effect for aggressive drinking is "glug-glug-glug".

Agreed with #1.
#2 is heresy however. Aquavit's caraway flavor is essential to the entire thing, and is the whole reason behind soaking the raisins ahead of time. You must use aquavit. Use vodka or brandy and it isn't glogg anymore than Kraft slices is cheese.
