Back in the day the Air Force sent their cops to Fort Dix New Jersey for a very abbreviated infantry training course. Part of the course was live hand grenades. When the sergeant put that live grenade in my hand all I could think of "holy shiat what if I drop it?!?"

I actually threw the thing further than I've thrown anything before or since. I was not what one would call a very good soldier.

The instructor should get an award for reaching up and dragging the noob off the top of the trench as a live grenade goes off.

Something strange happens when you have a live grenade in your hand for the first time. You can drill with dummy grenades all day long, but for some boots the first time with a real live grenade with the pin pulled can make them lock up completely in panic mode. Yes, that trench is there for a reason.

What I came to say.

I'm also guessing it's not his first time dragging a moron into the pit.

Also, they probably should wear sleeves that aren't so baggy. Unless this dude is a complete tool and can't throw more than 3 feet forward and 2 feet down, it must have stuck on his sleeve or something.

Somewhere between the fitness and all the training, most people in the military end up being faster thinkers than their civilian counterparts. This subsides a bit once they get out, but that kid was surprisingly safe with that instructor there.

Looks like it bounced off the inexplicably-high embankment before rolling back down into the trench.

Kinda had the same thing happen a couple of days ago except it was a gallon milk jug half full of gas, a couple of pieces of hose and an air compressor.
WARNING :
While the flame/fireballs from a 1/2 gallon of gas being infused with 180 psi is AWESOME you realllly need to stand back more than 10 to 12 feet.
/compressor»hose»jug»hose»flare=WOW
// then the gas that blew out the top of the jug went BOOM.

I'm firmly in the "subsiding" camp with a touch of "not that sharp to begin with". Completely agree that the people who are at this every day end up pretty quick on their feet but it nonetheless warms my heart to see the instructor's moves there. We had some pretty nasty accidents, not with grenades but on the firing range, and the guys in charge there might've learned a thing or two from the good comrade.

Anyone notice how the voices in the background remain the same all the way through the video? You'd expect someone to say, I dunno, HOLY FARK. In Chinese.

Also, this might be a misinterpretation, but it looks like one of those grenades on a stick, and as he throws the stick the explosive part falls off.

Y'know... the grenade is one of those things where the easier it is to use, the better.

Until China simplifies their design, I'm not real worried.

We had a trainee drop on in the pit. No safety trench. Trainee jumped over the wall into the range to safety. We all avoided that guy thereafter.

LMFAO. I know you guys get brain washed, so I don't hold it against you, but seriously this is standard indoctrination bullshiat. "YOU ARE THE STRONGEST! YOU ARE THE SMARTEST!...yadda yadda yadda". I've had to deal with plenty of former-service folks in my years in business, and it never ceases to amaze me how one moment y'all can be jokey and self-aware of the deficiencies of the military mind, and yet in the next moment spout its purest wharrgarrbl as if it is Gospel. The military teaches self-confidence, certainly, but it is a self-confidence that is based on physical self-image and the specific circumstances of being in the US military on a battlefied, and once that self-image begins to erode (Or no longer applies), the rest follows, and all you're left with is a high-school graduate with delusions of grandeur.

Personally? I've never met a former serviceman whose risen beyond middle management in anything. I know that's apocryphal, but seriously, how quickly you can throw a grenade doesn't make for much of a bellweather of success in everyday life.

Icewater in his veins... there should be a medal write-up in progress for that guy. *Tips cap*

I was also wondering about the design of that throwing area, but clearly it is the result of lessons written in blood!

PacManDreaming: Confucius says: a fool and his grenade are soon reunited.

Honest Bender: I need a pic of the "not sure if serious" dog holding up a "citation needed" sign.

People that have never been in genuine peril react unpredictably, but often poorly when it confronts them. People that have had to not only regularly face peril but be graded on their performance know how to react calmly and by the book. Even dumb people (that last) in the military go through this sort of thing regularly. Now, I'm biased because not only was I in the Navy, far from the Army idiots, I was also on a submarine and I was a diver, so I dealt with, in general, a far higher grade of serviceman than the average. If you base your opinion of the military on what junior enlistedmen do when drunk, then yeah.

When I was a factory manager after the Navy, I saw several low-skill-MOS veterans of the Army/AF do some very dumb things all the time. Smoking next to the propane locker comes to mind.

The sump is a dug out portion in a sloped floor to catch stuff--water, grenades, marbles, whatever. In a prepared position like a trench, the sloped floor funnels the loose grenade into a dug out portion (the sump) to contain the blast. In basements, the sump catches water, which can pumped out.

...except that the quality under discussion is reaction time, not generalized "good decision making" per se. And most forms of combat training do improve reaction time significantly.
