If Manning is actually healthy for next year, they need defensive players more. Still need a high pick, maybe just not that one.

The Texans are the aggy of the NFL.
Just when they get a big head and start winning, they lose to the worst teams.

I was just trying to subtly shed some light on the reference in the headline that seems to have our initial respondents confused; it could be that Dear Modmin wanted to be less obvious about it for just that reason.

Sure appeared the fix was in....

I can think of a couple of reasons why the NFL would not want the Colts to go 0-16 or have the 1st pick.

2011-12-23 10:01:16 AM
Luck had nothing to do with it. The refs left nothing to chance.

Yep. Most blatant fix since the '72 Olympic basketball final. So obvious that it was ridiculous. No series of referee calls could be that bad.

varmitydog: Yep. Most blatant fix since the '72 Olympic basketball final. So obvious that it was ridiculous. No series of referee calls could be that bad.

You mean the one where the Texans d-lineman raked the facemask of the Colts lineman right in front of the ref? The one where the d-lineman hit Orlovsky about 3 seconds after he had thrown the ball? The one where the defensive back had his arms wrapped around Jacob Tamme's waist, preventing Tamme from getting to a TD pass?

Those calls?

The Texans have only themselves to blame for the loss last night. I can't believe I'm typing this, but without Matt Schaub, they're one and done in the playoffs.

The Colts have some major decisions to make in the offseason. Do they sign the older players for one more run with Manning or blow up the team and build for the future if they get Luck-y?

C. Trade down for one of the other 3+ good QBs in the draft and use what you get to build a real team.

Unfortunately such a trade is virtually impossible. The compensation required for that trade makes it impossible to get fair value and would be disastrous for the team trading for the pick. That's why the Colts are trying to win so that they don't have to be the team that either trades Luck away or passes on him. I really think they're trying to get the 2nd overall pick to take the LT out of USC because their offensive line is shiat.

Henry Holland: You mean the one where the Texans d-lineman raked the facemask of the Colts lineman right in front of the ref?

Since when is an incidental "rake" illegal use of the hands? Since never.

Henry Holland: The one where the d-lineman hit Orlovsky about 3 seconds after he had thrown the ball?

3 seconds? Come on, be honest now.

Henry Holland: The one where the defensive back had his arms wrapped around Jacob Tamme's waist, preventing Tamme from getting to a TD pass?

He didn't have his arms around the guy. At all. The defender was in perfect tight coverage. There is no way to play that better as a defender. Far too often, a receiver will reach or dive for a pass and fall forward in the process, and the defender will get a flag for landing on top of him. It's complete BS.

I don't care about either of these teams, but watching the game it was clear the refs just couldn't let the players play, for whatever reason.

Not only that, they've actually "clinched" worst strength of schedule. If they lose their final game, they get the top pick. They control their own destiny, so to speak.

The Colts will win next week because Orlovsky will be playing for his NFL career. If he loses, the Colts take Luck and Orlovsky is doomed to competing for a backup position for another team. Win and he will be the backup to Manning, which could last a few seasons or one game, depending on how long Manning can play.

Frankly, NFL players don't tank. There are no guaranteed contracts. Every player is playing for their career. The scrutiny they face is amazing.

If the organization wants to lose, all they can really do is play the worst players on their team. But the players themselves will play hard, and it's way too blatant if you simply sit your best talent.

The Texans accepted the blame; J.J. Watt in particular blamed nobody but himself for the two costly penalties called on him during the last Colts drive.

That said, any objective observer would tell you that there were several crucial penalties called which, while correct when following the letter of the rulebook, could easily have been no-calls based on the severity of the infraction and its affect on the actual play. The end result was that the referees decided the final outcome of the game...not in any "fix" sort of sense, but by their own overzealous interpretations of the rules.

Your comment makes it obvious that you are not an objective observer, however, so take that as you will.

All this. The roughing the passer was a complete joke. The defender had the qb around the ankles before he released the ball, couldn't see the qb threw the ball, and the qb fell to the ground because of it.
The pass interference was also a horrible call. Defender didn't gave his back arm even touching the receiver, and barely scraped him with the leading arm as he reached out to defend the pass.

Who inferred anything about tanking? This isn't the NBA...

My point is that Orlovsky has extra incentive to play well as his future is directly tied to whether the Colts win or lose next week, not merely how hard he plays.

If the Vikings do end up with the #1 pick (they still have to find a way to lose to the Bears and Redskins, and there's no way the Rams are beating either the 49ers or the Steelers), they can trade Luck for some linemen, wide recievers, cornerbacks, safetys, and if they have any picks left after that, their linebackers aren't getting any younger either.
