Very cool. Although I was waiting for the male to go nuts at any moment.

The guy evidently knew enough not to make eye contact with the big boy. Just unbelievable video, this.

Saw this earlier and it brought me to tears. I love these creatures and am sad at their low numbers. I would love to do something like that, but could see myself getting overwhelmed and wanting to hug the baby, and getting beaten to death by the silverback. Darwin at his finest. And that's why I probably won't go on Safari.

Gorilla scientists. This is the real planet of the apes prequel.

There is absolutely no way to describe what it is like coming into contact with a curious wild animal that can kill you in a 1/4 second. You have no control, but the fascination is overwhelming. It is almost peaceful knowing that you are either going to die shortly or have an experience that you will never forget. You get scared later though...

truly one of the most amazing things i've ever seen.......

2011-12-23 02:01:17 AM
I would have been shiatting my pants in fear. That huge silverback could have farked him up before he even knew it was happening.

It's probably just sweat but it does look like he pissed himself.

Do you have any clue as to why the gorillas left when they did?

Yeah, but these gorillas aren't as hairy as Robin Williams.

One part of the brain: "This is amazing. They are truly magnificent up close. I can't help but smile! So many days of being bored and doing menial tasks but it pays off! I love life.

The other part: "If they see my smile, they might think I'm hostile, and the silverback will rip off my arms and beat me like a bongo while the rest chew my face off"

Damn it i wish i was a multi-billionaire , i'd buy some damn unpopulated Hawaiian island and populate it with gorillas and orangutans. Anything to keep those apes away from farking war and shiatty poachers.

Wow. I just loved the curiosity of the babies - and the "kiss" on the cheek by the female.

Of course, I would have passed out waaaaay before that happened after taking one look at the male.

Maybe someone can answer this for me. When the gorillas were first going down the walkway, one of the babies was behind the male; I was expecting the male to be last in line. Was this because they felt they were in a safe environment or was that just a "short bus" baby?

probably they just got bored or the male decided it was too risky to sit around in an unknown territory..

FredaDeStilleto: Wow. I just loved the curiosity of the babies - and the "kiss" on the cheek by the female.

Probably wasn't as much a kiss as it was a search for something to snack on (insects)..

Later that evening, they came back and killed everything in sight.

2011-12-23 07:42:52 AM
Wow. That was amazing.

Yes, scary. The silverback could have crushed him at any moment.

But the inter-species interaction must have been just an incredible experience.

The dude at the beginning makes Stephen Wright look like he's on crack.

I can't find a copy of a great Robotman (Monty) comic where he's trying to teach the gorilla Koko how to sign language...
I'm sure I'm not 100%, but I mostly remember how it went.

1st box:
Gorilla trying sign language: Koko food want now.
Robotman: Almost, the syntax isn't quite right.

2nd box:
Gorilla: Koko now food want:
Robotman: Not quite there.

3rd box:
Gorilla: Koko rip arms yours off soon.
Robotman: Here ya go!

One of my favorite comics of all time.

Have you ever been to the south or west sides of Chicago?

He was smart enough to not look them in the eye, yet he kept smiling.

The baring of teeth is usually seen as an act of aggression. I expected blood to be spilled.

Awesome stuff. Like many others in the thread, had I been that near the huge silverback, I would have only been able to poop all over myself in defense.

2011-12-23 09:21:02 AM
I'm curious. Why did the man in the video remain looking down for the most part? Is it a perceived threat to look at the gorilla(s) in the face? Is a sign of aggression? I get why you'd want to remain still but, when the silverback departed, but, the first thing the man did was to look down and away. Interesting.

Making eye contact with a silverback (or any grown male gorilla really) can be considered a sign of aggression by them. Looking down is a sign of submission.

Someone else mentioned his looking away but he was still smiling. I think the tooth-baring thing is more of a Chimp trigger than a gorilla one. Probably not a good idea either way though.

Actually, in most of the behavioral studies I have read, baring teeth with the lips pulled up is a fear sign in the great apes. Many scientists believe the root of why we smile when meeting strangers we wish to be social with is a throw back to that behavior. "See, I am no threat to you" kind of thing.

It is important to make the point with the "lips pulled up", baring the teeth with a frown position or straight back is a different story altogether.

Oh wow, this is aweso-- OH GOD SILVERBACK.

that was really. Watched it with my daughter, she now wants a baby gorilla..

I hate being the skeptic always, but does 'tour guide with camera' = 'wildlife photographer'? And is this a rare event or is it staged daily (matinees on weekends) for securities traders on vacation like the swimming with the sharks crap?

2011-12-23 12:18:22 PM
As that silverback was walking away, the temptation to smack him on the ass would be too great.

/I would've died a horrible, savage death and all for the lutz.

If I had that kind of money, I'd figure out some way to put a bounty on poachers. Either that or make wildlife game warden the highest paying job in Africa.

One day you've got "a troop of wild gorillas", the next day you've got porch monkeys.

Approves of the phrase.

maybe the gorilla felt threatened. The poachers are all African. The silverback is "habituated" to associate them with danger

2011-12-23 02:29:16 PM
the photographer made an interesting comment. The guy with the silver hair and the black t-shirt had to be assessed by the troop to make sure he was not a threat.
mental note:. wear hat and shirt in any other color besides black in jungle full of great apes.

2011-12-23 02:42:30 PM
That was cool. I think I'd be shiatting bricks with that silver back behind me though.
