GoDaddy sucks in every possible way. Bob Parsons should go back to making boring tax software.

Say what you will about GoDaddy (much of it well deserved, I'm sure) but from my experience, their tech support knows what the fark they're doing, which you can't say about so many of the other BS hosting companies that have sprouted within the last 10 years.

I concur - but I hope for recommendations for competent alternatives in this thread. It's re-registration time for me, and I don't mind moving some domains away from them for this.

I've been using Verve Hosting for nearly a decade. Haven't had a problem with them yet.

For shared hosting, I've used HostGator for years. They give you a real cPanel unlike GoDaddy. Also, when you use shared hosting, GoDaddy hosts their MySQL databases on another server. When I first saw that I thought, "Well that's probably pretty efficient. One server for PHP and another for databases." Then I had to fill out a form to get a database and wait two hours while the (automated?) system set it up. It was like that every time I wanted to install a CMS to play with or use.

I've had two people call Hostgator for support for really easy things and they seemed fast. Of course the two problems were stupid errors that my friends made. I've used them for years, but never needed to call them. I'm not really doing anything difficult. Just a few domains with some WordPresses. I think I had a problem with Joomla once, but that was because they upgraded PHP and some template I was using supported only the old PHP.

"Not only is there no First Amendment concern, but the notion that we should turn a blind eye to criminal conduct because other countries may take oppressive steps in response is an affront to the very fabric of this nation."

I didn't bother to RTFA originally, but holy shiat, she can't be serious?! I love how she basically says SOPA is oppressive, but now it's all or nothing. Don't worry about punishing just those who break the law, just make the law so farked up everyone is considered a criminal.

I see someone mentioned HostGator, I switched to them from Aplus after Deluxe (a SOPA supporter, by the way) bought them a few years back and service went to shiat.

Zero downtime for the last three years and responsive support are good enough for me!

2011-12-22 10:37:51 PM
If I change from GoDaddy do I have to then repay for registration? I got 8 years left on a domain I bought recently.

On the otherhand, it's still probably worth it.

2011-12-22 10:54:10 PM
Ugh. I never did use their hosting services, but I've had my domains registered with them from day 1. No longer.

They're a local company too, so that makes me extra sad.

This is going to go over for GoDaddy about as good as it did for NetFlix and their aborted Flixter (Or whatever it was called) attempt this summer. Or the big banks and their ATM fee debacle a few weeks ago.

GoDaddy just went into my "Never do business with" pile.

I switched to hostgator and they're awesome so far. Intelligent tech support, via phone or live chat. They migrated my site from my old host, and even modified my PHP files so my databases would be properly addressed and log-in before handing me the reigns.

I could use a recommendation on a DNS company since I am using Godaddy but will be switching because of this crap. Anyone want to help?

I've been with GoDaddy for years and until now have only found Parsons' antics to be irritatingly stupid. With his stance on SOPA, he's crossed over to dangerously stupid.

I'll be moving all my domains and hosting to 1 & 1.

Unfortunately I just reupped my Web hosting and domains for the year. I did, however, drop my highest-priced GoDaddy service a couple years ago...it was a hosted Exchange account that worked great with my iPhone 3G, but when I got an Android phone I moved the email part of my personal domain over to Google Apps for Business, which gives me a whole lot more email storage for less than half the price and a much better webmail interface. Of course, now iOS works just as well with Google Apps as it does with Exchange, so I would encourage anyone in the same boat to go over. Google Apps for Business also is fine with Outlook if you want that. If you aren't using a BlackBerry or Outlook, or a few other features, and don't mind ads and less storage, there's free Google Apps too.

/I do not work for Google, GoDaddy, or any other hosting provider.

Between this BS and the fact they farked over a friend of mine by yanking a profitable domain out from under him, they're getting the boot soon from my world. I've wanted to become an opensrs or enom reseller, but haven't had the spare funds for the sign up.

Prepare yourself for the flames. Briefly, as my train will be arriving in 2 min, SOPA has little to do with piracy and lots to do with giving corporations excessive, extrajudicial control of the net. Every major internet company taking a stance on it has been against it. Except GoDaddy, apparently. It violates at least two amandments, 1 & 4, and will make you impotent.

GoDaddy can [scatological reference] me. Months after I pulled all of my domains from them, they attempted to bill me for a recurring service I never signed up for. Took a day's worth of emails and phone calls to straighten it out. Am very happy with BlueHost now, kthx. Not to mention my current provider's config pages are much less garish and pushy.

Dyn Inc comes to mind. (dyn.com). Registrar, hosting and email hosting if you want that. Nice guys too - transferred my domains over there a while ago. I only use their registrar service though so I don't know how featured their hosting service is.

You will need to pay a transfer fee (sometimes as much as the renewal fee itself, sometimes less, as we do), but this will extend the registration period for another year beyond the current expiry. You won't lose anything, you'll get another year tacked on, and you'll be away from GoDaddy.
