Prediction: next year they'll start pitching their deals in July.

Happened to me with Sears this year - guaranteed by 12/23 with expedited shipping, now UPS says 12/30. The nice Bengali lady on the customer service line apologized. I insisted on a refund of the shipping and she agreed. Then I got notice that they only gave me the difference between expedited and Ground back ($3.42). And I have to go buy a gift for that person, and then return the late one to Sears when it gets here.

Assholes.

My brother bought his fiancee a jewelry box for his fiancee off of Amazon a couple weeks ago. Checked on the expected ship date after the order processed - 4/30/2012. Ha! Of course he cancelled the order.

The shortages are a black eye for Best Buy (BBY), which has beefed up its online campaign to fight off intense competition from online retailers and discount stores. And the holiday season is crucial for retailers like Best Buy because it can make up to 40% of annual sales.

Congratulations on using the Netflix-business-model of doing the exact opposite of the thing you should do if you want to attract/maintain customers. I'm sure it will work out this time! Do you think anyone you burn on Christmas is going to ever come back to you for anything, ever?

I just bought an iPod touch off of Amazon today, getting it tomorrow, so I'm getting a kick out of this thread.

This is pretty messed up. Not long ago, I had a Best Buy order stick in "processing" for over 3 weeks that could not be canceled. I wonder if Best Buy kept these orders in limbo like that, refusing to cancel them, keeping people from ordering elsewhere. Now that it's too late to move the order, they finally announced that their customers are SOL. I'm not saying this is what happened but I'm wondering if that's how it went down.

My Kohl's order (placed on the 15th) was delayed for some unknown reason and won't arrive until the 27th. I honestly didn't care since it was something my parents wanted me to buy for me from them (they're not so keen to the series of tubes), but I complained anyway. Got my shipping refunded plus some more Kohl's cash, so I'm relatively satisfied.

In this type of situation, call Customer Service and request a cancellation. After you get off the phone, call your Credit Card company or bank and inform them that you called and canceled and they need to decline the charge. They wont decline the charge, but it will be in the system for you to do a quick charge back if they to charge you for the item.

Ordered a refurbed Samsung Series 9 laptop last Sunday for 1/2 what a new one cost - arrived this afternoon, surfing porn tonight.

Free shipping, no sales tax. NewEgg rocks.

I guess I got lucky. I bought items on Thanksgiving day online (well, technically phone order because their system refused to believe that my credit card number was accurate). They've shipped and I'm using them. Granted, those items are a washer/dryer (and not the BF deal, those were already sold out) so there's not exactly a lot of demand.

i bought some stuff from amazon on wednesday with amazon prime 2 day shipping and they were shipped that day.. they're both going to denver, colorado. one started in phoenix and today is in kentucky. one started in kentucky then went to pennsylvania and now is in illinois. i'm not feeling too good about them getting to denver and being delivered later today.

I am so glad I read this!

I decided to participate in a Holiday Wishlist at church. One kid that I know wanted a Nintendo 3DS and I was gonna get it because the dad is in the hospital and the mom got laid off just before Thanksgiving.

I just ordered it tonight, because my mom just told me about this and showed me the wishlist. I went online, ordered it and was planning on picking it up at instore pickup. I printed out my confirmation and everything.

Because of this headline, I decided to check my confirmation email. Here's what it says:

New Egg has a wonderful selection of discounted items, specifically some re-certified monitors... one of which is being shipped to me, yay! They are a good place to pick things up, some websites, like AMD, link to newegg for purchasing.

The more I think about your response, the more pissed off I get. Best Buy had several opportunites to tell me this item was out of stock. And there are several other places in town where I can get it. But now they have 180 bucks of my money and change tied up while I try to buy one somewhere else. And they're glad to resolve it...in 8 days.

But I guess that's my fault for not checking my confirmation email. I suppose you think Best Buy is no way responsible for selling and charging me for an item they knew they didn't have.

This is why you should buy before Thanksgiving. If you want to wait until the big sales then you are rolling the dice on whether or not you will actually get the item before christmas (or even get it at all).

TigerDirect has always been good to me, whether it's puter parts or electronic gadgets. On Monday, I ordered a refurb puter (which will be light years ahead of the 8 year old one I'm using now) at a huge discount and got it this afternoon.

If you want something electronic, ask a geek where he or she shops. Best Buy hasn't been good for electronics for a loooong time.

Hell, even without Amazon Prime, when they say something is in stock, it's in stock. Prime or otherwise, everything ships the same time - it's just transit time that Prime changes.

Not true. They prioritize Prime orders over non-Prime for the "handling" part of S&H. Usually the difference is not enough for the customer to notice, though.

Didn't know that, but it makes sense - but Amazon at least will say "X left in stock" if they start running low, so even if someone else's order is put in above yours, at least you have some inkling that things were running out while you were ordering.

Gordian Cipher: It boggles my mind that our entire retail industry would collapse without the boost in 4th quarter earnings.

Not really anything that amazing. If there wasn't a major gift-giving holiday at the end of the 4th quarter, people would spread their discretionary spending out across the year. I know lots of people who hold off on major purchases all year so they can get the same thing as a Christmas present. My wife is one of them.

2011-12-23 03:35:54 AM
The problem I have with Amazon is 3rd party sellers. For a 3rd party seller the S&H is not disclosed to you until after the order has gone through. So if what you want is offered by, lets say, 10 sellers you have to make 10 orders to actually compare prices than cancel 9 of them. And other such shenanigans. I had this problem just the other day when I was going to get a tri-wing screwdriver. I ended up ordering from a guy who offered free shipping but there were several others that charged less for the item but probably had high S&H. OK so it gets better. After ordering I checked the delivery date. It's mid January for standard shipping! So I go back and change the order to 2-day shipping, now S&H is $30. I cancelled it but it's that kind of crap that makes me avoid 3rd party selling through Amazon and to a lesser extent Amazon itself.

//Anyone know what a tri-wing screwdriver is? Yeah? Did you fix a Wii?
