House Republicans on Thursday crumpled under the weight of White House and public pressure and have agreed to pass a two-month extension of the payroll-tax cut

Oooh, 2 months. Way to man up, there. The rematch is gonna be fun- right during the start of the primaries.

Actually, the whole thing is stupid. I feel stupid for having lived in this country while they got their collective stupid on these last 2 years.

FFS, about goddamn time.

Asshole children, the lot of em.

Dozens of Dem reps, and the President, each are reading this news, mouth agape, with a phone to their ear, listening to a dial-tone halfway through dialing Boehner's office to tell them "We cave! We cave!"

Bummer. I was hoping for a prolonged intra-party battle.

2011-12-22 04:11:12 PM
Don't worry. The Democrats still have time to figure out a way to much this up.

Dems: We want to accept your plan. We love you.
Repubs: NOT GOOD ENOUGH! We want it accepted . . . AND BLOWJOBS!
Dems: What? We can't!
Repubs: STAAAART SUCKIN!
Dems: Let us think about it
American People: You repubs are being awful
Repubs: Ok, just accept our plan
Dems: . . . .wait . . . is this a trap . . .let us just give you blowjobs anyway to be sure it's not a trap

I think they already did. If I were Harry Reid as soon as I saw the House GOP did their little voting trick, I would have put a straight up one year renewal of the payroll tax cut on the table, with nothing else attached, giving House Republicans the option of two things they didn't want to do but were going to be unpopular. Senate Republicans would not have filibustered it, seeing as how the PR was going.

But that's just me.

We've been saying this for a few years, now. Stick them in the uncomfortable light of having to vote against things like this. It's only happened once, and they folded like a cheap umbrella in a high speed wind. What did the Democrats do about this? A whole lot of nothing.

Nahh. The democrats leverage on this one is the fact that the two month extension cleared the Senate with bipartisan support. He did not have the votes to get the democratic version of a year long extension through. He played this well and has a leg up in conference but what you propose would have undermined that.

So instead of story being "Obama caves on Keystone" it'll be "GOP caves on middle class tax cut" Great work!

- Philip Klein (@philipaklein) December 22, 2011

2011-12-22 04:29:38 PM
GAT_00: Plus then the GOP could have gone "The Dems are playing politics too!" since straight up and down votes are political tricks these days.

"Since House Republicans have requested a 12 month extension, we have decided to attempt to pass a 12 month extension and send that to them for their consideration."

I guess it would take a talking points machine that stays in front of the story. So maybe it's good that Democrats didn't do it.

To the best of my knowledge, Obama has the option to thumbs down the Keystone project.

Does this include the unemployment extension?

2011-12-22 04:35:05 PM
They couldn't afford the risk of letting it happen in 2012 and giving Obama the "election-year tax cut."

The House made the move after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., agreed to appoint conferees to a committee to resolve differences between the Senate's two-month, 2 percentage point, payroll-tax cut and the House's one-year alternative.

Well that'll solve the problem for sure.

But it's the country of "You can't have this".

Which is not to be confused with the UK, which is the country of "If you have this, we will fine you, then take it away from you. Then arrest you."

feffer: Does this include the unemployment extension?

Yep; payroll tax cut, Medicare doc fix, and unemployment for two months + the pipeline stuff.

I love the way they are slightly modifying it to make it sound like a win. "Well, uh, make sure it mentions how much of a strain it is to businesses to not change the payroll tax that was expected to be extended and then have to potentially change it in 2 months when it is also expected to be extended."

2011-12-22 04:36:56 PM
I would have paid the $40 a paycheck to see the rest of the public absolutely turn on the GOP.

Sweet Heysus they are embarrassing.

It's a terrible thing when Republicans are forced to do their job instead of dictating how everyone else should behave.

It's really not that shocking. Boehner had no where to go.

2011-12-22 04:39:42 PM
Now we get to do it all over again in two months. Good thing there's not more important stuff for our government to focus upon.

Let's just see what happens.

The Tea Farters could still really, really, really screw over Boner.

Making everyone aware that republicans want to destroy the middle class and are bad for America in general is the most important work our government could be doing right now.

If only they hadn't screwed around the first time, adding unrelated things like a damn pipeline decision and other drek, we could've had the 1 year all along. Ah well.

And that's it in a nutshell: the GOP caving on something that they used as a major leg in their 2010 campaign.

I wonder how Boehner is going to sell this to the Tea Party caucus.

I'm torn. On the one side, I like the payroll-tax-funded safety net programs, and I like them so much that I like to pay for them. This cut makes it more politically tenable that those programs will be weakened in the future (though it doesn't hurt them directly at present).

On the other side, I love seeing the Teahadist wing shiat themselves.

Wat do?

Headso: Making everyone aware that republicans want to destroy the middle class and are bad for America in general is the most important work our government could be doing right now.

So you're saying the #1 priority of Democrats in congress is to make sure the Republicans don't have another term...Why does this sound so familiar?

DGS: If only they hadn't screwed around the first time, adding unrelated things like a damn pipeline decision and other drek, we could've had the 1 year all along. Ah well.

I guess the big question is whether that stuff will be included in the bill in two months or if they'll try to pass them as separate legislation? I'm sure they'll come up with some ridiculous bill that will pass but the tea party can vote against so everyone feels like the big winner.

Remember a year or so ago, when people thought that two years of Democratic rule was too slow to correct the destruction of the U.S. economy done over the 8 years by the Bush jr. gang? And they voted in a republican majority to congress?

/Idiots...............................

The Tea Fartiers are likely experiencing some political pressure from Boner's people right now. They've been offered to be allowed to live in exchange for their votes. We'll see.

It's a shame the Senate Dems were unwilling to consider a long term solution. The next time this goes to the wire they will only have themselves to blame.
