She meant 'Nurse Who', right?

She may be able to pull off a Tom Baker.

/Best Doctor by far

I think they should go with an older dude, though. They missed the boat with David Morrissey as well.

As long as you don't count William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, or Matt Smith.

/don't you think she's a bit old for the role looks tired.

I think that would be awesome, but I wonder if she will do well with the manic type personality of Dr. Who.
She's always been kinda somber in most roles. Heck, she'd probably chew it up.
I'd also wonder if someone of her star caliber would stick out a commitment to a grueling TV series for a couple of year.

This would have been a great idea.

Love you Helen, but your a tad too old for that role.

Unless you're shooting for the Matlock demographic.

If there's going to be a female Doctor, and I think that's a fine idea, it should be Gina Bellman:

i2.listal.com

As much as I love Helen Mirren, she immediately disqualified herself by letting on that she doesn't know enough about the show or the character to know that the title of the show is a question, not his name.

2011-12-22 05:01:16 PM
Referring to the character as "Doctor Who" should automatically remove her from the applicant pool

2011-12-22 05:01:21 PM
Oh... and if the next Doctor isn't going to be woman, I hope it's Dylan Moran... I'd love a snarky Doctor.

Hipster? I would have thought that naming the three modern Doctors would have disqualified me from hipsterdom.

You forgot Paul McGann... oh wait, that movie with him really sucked.

She's be great in a story arc as a overlooked time-lord villain like the master.

Or maybe as "Romana". Isn't it still up in the air if Ramona was in E-Space when the Timelords were destroyed?

Since the novels from the interegnum are semi-canonaical, Romana was the president when the war started.

Isn't the next one technically the last regeneration the Doctor is supposed to have?
I'd love to see a Doctor a little more insane over that fact and wanting to capture glory. Like the brief glimmer of it in Tennant at the end of Waters of Mars. That would have been a great season theme, but we only got the brief Timelord victorious monologue and instant shiatcanning of the idea.

/A season of a darker Doctor would be perfectly topped by bringing back the Master at the end of it, forcing the Doctor to realize he's been just as bad, if not worse.

I'd play doctor with her.

The doctor as a female would ruin the show.

Sergeant Grumbles: Isn't the next one technically the last regeneration the Doctor is supposed to have?

I think they scripted that out with River Song giving him her regenerations. As long as their is a market for Dr. Who...they'll find a way out.

Yes, she'd be a great Rani. I agree perhaps too somber as the Doctor, but she could do it just because she's that versatile.

Ten years ago, watching her and Alex Kingston together might have been fapworthy.

BTW, almost nobody thinks Colin Baker was better than Tom Baker, and few think that docs 1-3 are superior.

sinanju: As much as I love Helen Mirren, she immediately disqualified herself by letting on that she doesn't know enough about the show or the character to know that the title of the show is a question, not his name.

These are actors. They don't have to be fans. IIRC, Matt Smith never watched the show before he auditioned, but he's quite successful.

No, the general consensus is "current is best" or "hey, we saw Tom Baker first because he was on the show for an ungodly amount of years and/or those were the only episodes shown in the US for years, so he must be the best!"

/and isn't Alex Kingston and Helen Mirren together still fapworthy, as long as you enjoy GILFs?

The Big Finish audio dramas with McGann were really good. Plus, McGann made that movie a tiny bit watchable, at least to me. I loved his display of innocence combined with his hidden deviousness. The part where he pickpockets the cop was really cool.

/the movie did suck ass

Uh... I don't quite think you got what he was going for. When someone says "Tom Baker was the best", and the reply is "yeah, he was the best as long as you don't count...", you're not going to list the original guy.

Now trolling... well, that's another subject entirely.

I liked what little I saw of Troughton, and I liked McCoy's darker, more manipulative Doctor. Tom Baker had some good episodes, but he's overrated.

We called them "Hooeys" or "Whooeys" when I helped a friend run his comic shop. They were almost as bad as "Warsies" in attitude.

Yes! That's who I was thinking of as a Evil Renegade Timelord. Helen MIrren could eat that role up.

Why do people have such a hardon to make the doctor into a woman? Is it so the nerd elite can stop feeling guilty for rubbing one out any time he gets mentioned?

All I know is, I watched the show a bit before he was the doctor

Then I watched every episode he was in at least three times

Then I stopped watching at all when he was replaced.

For me, he is the only doctor.

As if someone running a comic shop has room to poke fun at fans of anything.

Um, no. I still find Alex remarkably sexy, even though she's almost 15 years older than me. Helen Mirren is just old.

He's your David Tennant.

That's a Doctor I could get behind.

Seriously though, as I understand the concept (not a big who fan), the Doctor is a Time Lord who can be anyone. Why not a woman?

I guess,,
the thing is, with Tom Baker, there was this underlying feeling of menace,,, like he might, at any moment, turn around and do the most unspeakable things to K-9, or to the girl, you had to trust him - he was the Doctor after all, but you could never feel completely comfortable about it

that was lost after he left, now they are just crime-solvers with sonic screwdrivers

Of course not, you can always add another for some reason, as long as the fans can follow.

Hand Banana: The doctor as a female would ruin the show.

In theory, no. In practice, probably yes.

The thing is I see nothing wrong with it, but if they're going to do it just to have a woman in the role then it will likely be just a stunt and will signal that the show's producers are more interested in marketing gimmicks than plots.

2011-12-22 07:04:57 PM
I'm not a big fan of the idea of casting female Doctor, but even less a fan of casting a big name actor in the part. She'd probably pull a Chris Eccleston, i.e. get bored after one series and bail.

I mean he's already played God. Why not a Timelord?

Huh. I never get that from him. Menace to the real baddies, maybe, but most of them have pulled that off (even if Tennant sometimes chewed a bit of scenery to do it).
