That's a pretty strict attendance policy.

Does the school get a bounty for every kid they incarcerate? Because that would explain a lot.

What in these people's minds makes it ok to jail a person over a pair of socks?

No one along the chain of people involved (teachers, administrators, detention center employees) bothered to speak up and say 'What the fark are we doing?'

/but race obviously isn't an issue

This is all bullshiatt. Well, all except the socks. The socks were clearly gang-colors and the little gang banger should have been locked up. I am actually appalled that he only spent 3 days in jail.

Of course not. White kids have their parents drive them to school, black kids ride city buses.

In the case of the high school student, she had been arrested for shoplifting and had been told not to violate any of the school rules. "She shows up tardy one day and hears her name called over the loud speaker to come to the principal's office. She spends the next five days behind bars"

Subby accidently left that part out.

I know I'm not supposed to show real emotion on a Fark thread, but this is terrifying. The one where the kid gets put in jail for days because he wouldn't stop crying?

I think of my sons and yeah, precious snowflake and all that but, the thought of that actually happening? I would need to be sedated. I would have a serious full on panic attack at the idea of my small child being put in a detention facility over crying too much.

I know, I know, I need to buck up and stop raising a cry-baby~ but in all seriousness, this is unfathomable.

Im not defending it.....

But I think the issue is these kids may be in a detention center type of school, like you are there because you are about to go to jail school. I infer that from the article, not firsthand knowledge.

What I do know is that both the public schools and the zero tolerance policy are broken and need to be completely gutted.

The numbers on what we spend on poor kids are staggering, and the results just beggar the imagination. Most of them incarcerated or poor for life or harmed mentally by the system. It has to be somewhat intentional because only an idiot can look at the numbers of what we spend vs the results we achieve and say that the public schooling and welfare system are working for kids.

Sorry. In a civilized country, children don't get actually arrested for shoplifting either. They get a stern talking to, and are made to apologize to the shop keeper.

This.

Like a lot of kids, I had some behavioral issues. I regret to say a few of them still follow me as an adult. This was amongst them. I'm not hear to judge the child for what may be going on at home b/c my home life was at times pretty sad. Some kids don't have an emotional outlet and it comes out in the classroom.

And to paddle that kid? To send him away? Wow...you know what?

That makes me want to cry. My thoughts and prayers to youngster in question.

Shoplifting sure does (waits for eyes to finish rolling).

Problem with our schools are the people running them.

50% percent of the people involved in running our public schools should be fired, on the spot. That would be a good start

Whenever I hear politicians go after school spending...they focus too much on the teachers...never the people running the schools...which is why you get this nonsense.

Politicians keep the admin wonks because many politicians end up with those jobs when they leave politics

This stupid stuff is happening everywhere, not just Mississippi

No, the SPLC is a politically motivated shake-down racket - kind of like Jesse Jackson's "Rainbow Push" - only better organized, more litigious, better financed, and much more sinister.
