Hey LAPD, 1995 called and they want their Groupwise back.

Seriously? Groupwise? I don't think I've had the misfortune of using and supporting a bigger POS (and as much as I hate Exchange, Groupwise is worse).

Maybe this is a clever way of masking the fact that Google Docs sucks schweddy balls.

I'm starting to run into the issue of privacy and cloud services now in a research environment, where it's never really been an issue for me before. The job I am moving in to as a Post-doctoral fellow after I defend my PhD in February (and I have been doing a little work for this group over the last few months) involves genomics of rare human hereditary diseases. We actually can't out data on any server located outside of Canada for privacy reasons and regulations from our funding. So while the group is pretty technologically forward thinking, and likes to share documents using Dropbox, we have to be really careful about we do and don't put in to dropbox folders.

We are still on Lotus Notes. An interface that hasn't changed since 1994.

/looking to migrate to Microsofts cloud solution
//google never made the short list due to security issues

As someone who just finished migrating 6000 users from Groupwise to Google, I couldn't agree more. It was secure, I'll give it that (everything's encrypted once it's in the system) but it was slow, extremely difficult to support, and mobile devices were a nightmare to use with it.

The biggest problem with Groupwise was that it only really worked well as long as everyone in the company was using it. That was by design. It did not integrate well with other systems and it took Novell three years to finally get something to sync calendar and contacts on an iPhone, which was three years too late.

The only thing our users have consistently complained about since the move is Google's calendaring system, which isn't as collaborative as Groupwise or Exchange (or Notes, I suspect).

Worked with LAPD on a project. They don't work very well with the "cloud". Everyone that has access to their data needs an FBI background check. This includes the janitor at the datacenter.

My company uses Groupwise. Everything about the calendar aspect of it is a pain in the ass.

Considering LAPD's long and proud tradition of corruption, good. Can you imagine if one of the cartels could get to one of the server techs at the cloud center?

Sure, but the janitor doesn't have a login or even know which rack the server is in and Google(in regards to this article) has umpteen datacenters across the US that the data is hosted at/run through. All in all, it's a redtape nightmare

Jesus the 33rd: My company uses Groupwise. Everything about the calendar aspect of it is a pain in the ass.

Well, that's what I thought, but people who have used one program for 15 years see it different. About the only "big" difference I'll give them is that assistants can't do real time busy searches for their bosses, so it's more difficult to schedule meetings for the bigwigs. Before they could get an instant report about who wasn't available at a certain time. Google will search everyone's calendar and suggest a time to schedule that everyone can attend, but that's not how the assistants were using busy searches. They were using them to make sure certain people couldn't attend a meeting. Go figure.

But yeah, you'll get no defense of Groupwise from me. It was difficult to support on the back end and chronically 8 years behind on the client side. Users didn't like it, they only liked particular features once they lost them.
