Remember Drake's RING DINGS, back when they were individually foil wrapped?

The key was unwrapping without tearing the foil, then fold it into nice Asian throwing weapon.

The '70s were awesome!

Who would have thought a company that caters to fat American's would have a hard time making ends meet? You'd think they be making more cash than an Indian casino.

I went on a diet, I'm sorry. I feared it would impact the economy, but I had to do it for the sake of my health.

If I quit drinking too, just hoard gold and stock up on ammo.

Tastykake > Hostess

We have a Hostess outlet near our house and my husband picked up a box of ho-hos and a box of twinkies one day - they were disgusting. Give me a Little Debbie any day of the week. That Hostess crap tastes like old grease.

I picked up my last box of Christmas Tree cakes this week. They are nearly impossible to find this close to Christmas and my favorite holiday treat.

Hostess should invest some money into getting marijuana legalized. They wouldn't need to worry about profits after that.

I haven't had any of their products since the 1970s and even then I realized Twinkies were gross.

I used to like Ding Dongs though, but I bet they're not the same anymore.

FTA:

"Neither of the unions has agreed to the concession.

A Hostess worker said, "We understand that, should we pursue some form of legal action to require the company to live up to the terms of the contract, they may close, but we have come to believe that they will close anyway."

So the worker would rather have no job with the union or have a job without the union?

You guys don't know how to read an entire paragraph. They said they believe it will close anyway.

Not necessarily From the previous paragraph:

"And private-equity firm Ripplewood Holdings, which holds a controlling ownership in Hostess, will not reinvest capital unless it gets its union concessions, one source said."

So it sounds like if the unions are willing to negotiate the plant would stay open.

Ah yes, union pensions have ruined another good company again.

2011-12-22 05:55:42 PM
Sounds like another company planning a strategic bankruptcy in order to tear up their union contracts and put pension plans in the trash bin while the company executives cash out millions. Kiss those decent wages and benefits and retirement for workers goodbye. And don't forget to duck to avoid getting hit by the executives and their golden parachutes.

2011-12-22 05:58:01 PM
Wow you people are something. The instant you see that letter U, you immediately make up your minds that "unions are teh debil!" without even possibly considering the whole picture.

The unions in this particular case have reason to believe that the company's woes are because of mismanagement. So why should they give up something they've already earned to avoid a restructuring that the company apparently needs?

If the captain is steering you into an iceberg, the solution isn't to start tossing things overboard in anticipation of taking on water.

Ripplewood Holdings, a company that exists solely to own other companies. Yeah the don't give a rat fart about the actual products that come off the shelf.

It doesn't sound like the employees or the unions give much of a damn about the product either. I don't want to get on a soap box here but people ask what happened to the manufacturing sector in this country and all you have to do is watch cases like this. Management makes poor decisions for the direction of the company because there are too many demands by the unions and government regulations. Rather than do what's right for the company to stay in business the employee I quoted (and bureaucrats) would rather let the company shut down and loose their job than take some concessions. It's what happened to American manufacturing and what's happening to the economy in California. Rather than try and fix it and take one for the team and keep your job let's watch the whole thing implode as we walk to the unemployment line and blame everyone else but themselves.

..or maybe, just maybe, management is incompetent, and rather than give up something they've already earned just to allow a vulture capitalist group to "save" them, they'd rather take a chance with restructuring actually fixing the company?

I wonder (bad pun) about this myself. They are selling established brands to a constantly growing and replenishing market - how tough could it be? It's not like selling Chevys where in 10 years you need completely upgraded product. Must be Michelle Obama's fault...

It's like when Rite-Aid® closed all its stores in Las Vegas years ago, and I remember somebody remarking at the fact that a company that seemed to sell mainly condoms, beer, and drugs somehow couldn't make a living in Las Vegas...

THIS! For crissakes, people, wise up!

Corporations don't give you five-day work weeks, safe working environments, 8-hour days, sick leave, vacation, and pensions out of the goodness of their hearts!

People fought and DIED for those things, union people!

Collective bargaining by labor is the ONLY real power we ordinary people HAVE.

Ah yes, union pensions have ruined another good company again.

Pensions? Pensions? Because those are less than Social Security as a total cost? Because management has been stealing from benefits for a decade -- or better yet see the fraud that Michael Milken pulled for a decade, looting pension funds to pay for acquisitions.

Crybaby Conservatives ought to be shot for treason .. or better yet jailed pre-emptively for terrorism.

They are selling established brands to a shrinking market, and since they're already controlled after one bankruptcy by a VC firm, there's no reason to believe they want to keep the company open.

The problem here is that they sell, essentially, gas station "dessert". They have been losing market share for over a decade. The other side of the problem is that any union labor is an increased cost over time. Union labor never gets cheaper, ever.

Now factor in the Venture Capitalists that bought Hostess the last time it was in bankruptcy - all they want is to get their money back. If they can't get their money back, then they want to get the most value for the dollar. Notice that neither of those goals is actually keeping the company in business.

That's where the union loses - they are betting the company will go through bankruptcy and they will have a say in the negotiations about how to handle that debt. What they don't realize is that the people running the company have no compelling need to keep the business running if they think they will make more money selling off the brand and shutting the whole thing down. If/When (probably When) that happens - everyone on the union end loses. When the company goes out of business the pension payments stop, and if it's dissolved the buyer won't have to cover those, either.

The biggest problem here is that the dissolution of a company can terminate a pension contract.

I'll bet that Bimbo buys them out for pennies on the Peso, and then two months later someone finds the severed finger of a Mexican drug cartel member baked into a Twinkie.

He isn't talking about leaving the union, but about the union making concessions. He says he´ll loose his job regardless.

Do you hate unions so much that you can read any text, and infer any meaning from it that fits your world view? Because your comment sure seems to indicate that you have no clue what you quoted.
