gopher321: Which will be much appreciated by the pets I'm sure.

I live in Minneapolis. And I have a Greyhound I love dearly. Sweetest dogs ever. Even so, the incredibly low body-fat percentage they have as a result of genetics necessitates that she wears a coat in the winter in order to not shiver herself to pieces every time she goes out. And yes, I do get her a new one at Christmas.

So, sure. A Yorkie in a cardigan is probably unnecessary. But my Gracie LOVES her sweaters. So bite me.

The stuffing is coming out of my dog's bed, so he is getting a new one. He's a good dog who deserves a cozy bed, and I am a good human who deserves not to be sweeping up bits of fluff every day.

I have this urge to dress my cats up in elf costumes.

Mostly because they'd hate it and it would be hilarious.

As the caretaker of approximately twenty colobus monkeys dressed in Civil War outfits, I'm less concerned with this article than I am about the prospect of the monkeys escaping and hurting people.

Fair enough. But I wasn't necessarily referring to gifts that pets can, ya know, actually appreciate. I'm talking about the dimbulbs who spend hundreds or thousands on exotic imported dog food, or customized doghouses, etc.

It's their money to do with as they wish, but to the rest of us it just looks weird.

Why is it your business how people spend their hard earned money? I don't have a dog yet, but I am not the type who is going to dress my dog up. If I decide in the future that I want to dress my dog up, I will. FARK you! Stop being such and arsehole! Merry Christmas!

2011-12-22 02:15:07 PM
If my wife or myself want something we tend to buy it for ourselves well before Christmas. As a result, the gifts we give each other for Christmas tend to be cat toys. I get some catnip, she gets a mouse, and the cats get to play in the wrapping paper. Its win-win-win.

2011-12-22 02:15:30 PM
Cats got new nametags. $3.00 each. Maybe a new feather toy for the young one and a catnip mousey for the old one. $10 max. Wake me on Caturday for pictures.

Diogenes: Mom's thinking of getting one of the dog racing retirees. Did you raise yours from a pup?

I've known a few. In my experience, they're really sweet if somewhat neurotic. I don't know if it's the breed, the conditions they were raised in, or just the dogs I knew, but you get weird traits like being scared of certain parts of the floor, etc. Great dogs, though.

Also, I don't see what the problem is with buying your pets gifts. They like new toys and food and all that as much as any human. They don't get that it's for Christmas, but they'll understand that you're fawning over them while they get high on catnip or toss around a new squeaky toy.

Costumes and shiat are silly, though.

So instead of spending money, (money not racking up credit cards you're not going to pay off) people should pathologically horde their cash? Or just let it sit in the bank, cause the banks seem to do well with it.

I however, do not feel the need to dress my cats up.

2011-12-22 02:15:49 PM
I'm sorry subby has so little money he can't afford to buy gifts at the ninety nine cents store. There are worse things a person can do than spend on their pets.

On the other hand it's more funny than obnoxious that a person would spend on their pet like it was another person. What do the pets know? Especially cats, all they really love is the sound of a can opener opening up some cat food.

I find that people who depend on me almost completely for food, warmth, and the ability to out into the fresh air treat me pretty damn well.

I almost never have to use the hose.

Because 9 times out of 10 a pet will still be more appreciative for getting something than everyone else who whines and cries that it's "not the one I wanted!!"

My Great Dane, Justice, is the same way--150lbs but barely any body fat. Plus, she was raised in FL, so never knew cold weather until we got her 2 years ago. Without a coat, she's a shivering mess in even mildly cold weather. She's had the same one for 2 years & is getting a new one on Sunday. This is her last winter, helping my husband shovel snow by barking at it.

Or...It could be more for us, the owners, than the pet anyway. As long as we are buying/giving gifts, why would we want to leave out our pets?

I don't actually buy my cats anything "for" an occasion...however, 9 out of 10 times I come home from the grocery with something for them that's not the standard food and litter. They have more toys than are necessary, and I'm fine with that. Those three furry heads greet me every day when I come home, hang out with me watching tv, and take up the empty side of the bed. They fill an empty house.

You can't put a price tag on that subby, so fark you.

it's cool because chinese kids get the gift of hard work

and the waltons make a shiat ton of money on the stock market

and your kid gets a cheaply constructed, lead laiden toy

and those poor people still get to beg for change outside the wal mart

everybody wins!

Our cats are getting a new climbing tree. And yeah, it's in the garage, waiting for Christmas so "Santa" can leave. Hey, my kid is grown so it's not like we get to buy a ton of toys that we actually get to see a kid open (Toys for Tots, FTW...we still get to BUY them...) and it's a photo op for my cat-crazy friends.

The cats won't appreciate it as a Christmas gift, but they'll appreciate the bejeezus out of it while they lounge on it, looking out the window...

I bought my dogs a bunch of toys last year and shoved them all in a stocking. My little westie horded the toys and the stocking in front of the fireplace and wouldn't let the other dogs near them. I had to put her down on thanksgiving weekend. Yes certainly it could be classified as dumb that I spent money on dogs that have no concept of Christmas, and yes they either ruined or lost the toys within like one week, but I'm glad I have that memory and the accompanying photographs.

I never went out of my way to get my pets gifts until this year when my sister got a puppy, Jack. I wanted to get her dog gifts, so whatever I bought for Jack, I bought one for my dog Marley. It's not about the dogs - it's because I really wanted to get something for my sister.
Then I had to get the cats something or my step-daughter would give me a guilt trip, so they got a couple small toys.
I might have spent $20 total, so no big deal.

Last night my husband scolded me for showing him the dog's gift in front of her. I guess she's supposed to be surprised.

A costume and a hat are a small fortune?

I bought Beaglish girl a new Santa suit type jacket, but it's more a gift for my friend. I'll be at her house for xmas dinner and she LOVES seeing cutsie stuff like that. She will need a light jacket that night anyway. The small fortune invested was $5.99.

I usually have some dog related fine print sentiment on my home made xmas card was "For some dogs, every day is Christmas". Not as in getting crap, but as in their joy of every day living.

My xmas card from last year, I think I spent about $3 in prop antlers. (She's wearing support braces for her shoulders and wrists, they're not for fun.)

because its hillarious. We always got my dog a bag of treats, and put them in his stocking. and he could SMELL it. so we'd put the stocking on the floor, and he'd run around and try to dig in the stocking to get a treat. So we'd get him one out, and he'd chew for awhile. And while he was distracted, we'd get another one, and suddenly, OMG NEW CHEWIE. and so on. He'd hoard them all in a big pile.

We also bought a bunch that we gave to him later in the year.

now the cat, I got the cat a jingle bell collar because it pissed him off. and it was adorable. and he HATED it.
