Not another one of these. Yes I'm cheap but I'll still give atleast 15% and whatever rounds easily to the next dollar. But if for some reason I pay in cash don't but a douche and bring me only large bills expect me to wait for you to come back again with smaller bills for a tip.

fark, tipping thread time.
Also that article had a horrible amount of random hyphenation.

Yea, but that's mostly because the Fark admins add 15% every time we get a thread with more than 8 people posting.

Why does it seem like every time we hear about tipping etiquette the percentage creeps up some? 15% is fair.

2011-12-22 01:05:48 PM
Different article but allow me to reiterate it:

The tipping percentage has gone up (from 10 to 15 to 20 "standard" now) because the price of things has gone up.

..And that's why you're a waitress and not handling the important stuff.

/not really a jerk like that in person

Ok, serious question

Why are we tipping based on the size of the bill? Why do servers in expensive restaurants deserve more money than the people doing the EXACT SAME JOB in the cheaper places.

We should all tip the same amount no matter what the bill

$1

// Ok. maybe $1.50

2011-12-22 01:08:37 PM
The cheaper the bill, the higher my tip percentage goes.

2011-12-22 01:09:12 PM
When I go out to a restaurant, the first thing I do after I sit down is put a roll of quarters on the table. For any given meal, this is the maximum tip I'll give to any waitress but they don't know that. As the meal progresses, I start my deductions:

- Forget to fill my pop? Thats four quarters
- Too slow bringing the lemons and extra sugar so my wife can make lemonade? 2 quarters
- Any pink in the middle of my steak? You'd better believe thats 8 quarters.

And on and on.

My absolute favorite is when the roll is empty by the end of the meal. This means I have the pleasure of writing a note to the waitress on the inside of the roll explaining just how she failed me.

2011-12-22 01:11:18 PM
Any Canadians want to chime in on tipping? I never know what to tip up here since the servers actually make a living wage. Do you still do 15-20%?

No ketchup for your steak? 4 quarters.

So here's what I generally tip:

$-$$:
Poor service: 15%
Good service: 20%
Excellent (I mean really excellent): 25%

$$$-$$$$:
Poor/Good: 15%
Excellent: 20%

By $$$-$$$$ I mean I'm paying 80 or more for a meal. So yes, I expect slightly more from expensive restaurants than dives. But the guy at the $100 per plate restaurant, I guarantee you, is not doing 10 times as much work as the person at the $10 per plate restaurant. So I think it's reasonable.

Maybe you should just stay the FARK home, the wait staff and owners don't want your bullshiat anyway. And if your wife want's lemonade, order lemonade, don't expect the wait staff to cater to your off menu whims. Also, stop asking for a ruined steak.

Hey, they were smart enough to get a job at an upscale joint. Plus in general, they do tend to be better waitstaff. I'd probably add that the scale at the lower end is a little more generous than the middle and higher ends.

$40- every weekend 52 weeks a year - $40 is damn cheap

"We're just grateful to have those people as clients and we know that they probably don't have a lot of extra money to give us a tip on top of that
That's a nice thought but if you can't swing the whole thing then perhaps you should consider staying home.

You see, tips aren't extras - they are figured in to an employees wage as in the FARKING govt taxes you on an expected percentage of them and your boss pays you only 85% of minimum wage to compensate himself because he's a farking 1%er-- no lie though, here in CT the law is- 85% of minimum is legal.

So you know, if you're in a vets club - nobody's expecting anything-it's the way it is. Anywhere else though, a tip should be thought of as part of the check total- yeah pre tax is cool but don't get carried away.

And for the "blah blah blah then don't wait tables" crowd- don't worry everyone talks about you and how cheap you are and the next time you go in to the place - they'll be doing rock paper scissors to see who gets stuck with your cheap chapped ass. Short armed with deep pockets s.o.b.'s complete with pockets full of fishhooks. They've wasted their time with you when they could have worked even harder somewhere else to help another guest. So when you stiff the staff you've shorted them and another guest.

Don't mean to become inarticulate but I've seen waitstaff burned by amateur food critics. Can really ruin a fair night

CujoQuarrel: Ok, serious question

Volume. At a Denny's a server is basically hurling plates of food at a huge number of people and really spending very little time with each. At a good restaurant the server is dealing with far fewer tables, spending more time with each, and seeing a much slower turnover rate per table. If you're paying that much more and not getting the higher standard of service, then you shouldn't be eating there.

2011-12-22 01:44:09 PM
I still think the standard is fine at 15%.
I will pay 15% even if the service was bad.
If it is really bad, I still pay 15% and have a chat with the manager.
If the service is good, I'll go to 20% and possibly round up to the nearest 5.
