I heard the story on my way in to the office this morning. I understand where they're coming from, but I doubt they're going to change anything. Wait, no I don't even understand where they're coming from, I don't think anyone who hasn't been in their shoes can. But the fact of the matter is nobody really wants them to change. China likes the buffer, ROK doesn't want the economic impact of absorbing them much less the culture shock that would make German reunification look like nothing, and Russia doesn't particularly care one way or the other. They're a pawn in the game played by the global powers, really.

GAT_00: They also juxtapose pictures of Kim Jong Il with Libya's Moammar Gadhaif and Egypt's Hosni Mubarak, and provide descriptions of the Arab Spring.

Why exactly is this message going to resonate with people who have never heard of the Middle East?

The NK people consider a lot of the Middle East (particuarly Sadaam Hussein-backed Iraq of yesteryear) their allies. They know all about the "American Imperialism of the Middle East". And the NK government telling them things like that helps reinforce nationalism and the notion that "America is going to bomb us any minute!" I exceedingly doubt we'd ever mess with NK (no oil, too close with China) but you can see where info like that would make an insular people worried.

I recently watched a very good documentary about young gymnasts in the Mass Games over there and it was filmed during the Iraq invasion. Sadaam had already been kicked out of power and at least a week later, the North Korean people didn't know he was kicked out yet. The government hadn't told them. No doubt the North Korean people have NO idea of the Arab Spring, unless it was told through the eyes of American-backed evil uprisings.

Those videos that have come out about the 100,000s of "mourners" are pretty creepy. Feels like there were armed guards off camera "enticing" people to mourn, and a contest for an extra half-ration of food for who could wail the loudest.

Hyman Roth?

Later on he had an idea to build a city out of a kimchi jar for GI's on the way to the Yalu River. That kid's name was Kim Jong Il, and the city he invented was Pyongyang. This was a great man, a man of vision and guts. And there isn't even a plaque, or a signpost or a statue of him in that town! Someone put a rice grain through his eye. No one knows who gave the order. When I heard it, I wasn't angry; I knew Il, I knew he was head-strong, talking loud, saying stupid things. So when he turned up dead, I let it go. And I said to myself, this is the business we've chosen; I didn't ask who gave the order, because it had nothing to do with business!

It was worse with Kim il Sung's death.

The person who cries the loudest is the most loyal!!!! And if you aren't crying as much as the person next to you, you are putting yourself in line for the gulag.

The news reporter was, I think, faking some of those tears she had during the newscast of his death.

Yeah, the dramatic public mournings are creepy as shiat. Maybe the North Korean captives are exaggerating as a very subtle way of rebellion.

"Oh, you want me to mourn now? Sure, I'm gonna mourn so farking loud, his own family will be shamed by the contrast with their own pitiful efforts at grieving. No deceased leader in the history of mankind will ever be mourned as extravagantly as Kim Jong Il will be by me, motherfarkers."

Some of what I've read suggests that they're not so much mourning as stuck in a hysterical panic. For decades, the entire state media was telling them that their Dear Leader was all that stood between them and enslavement and torture by the west.

These people probably know better, but it's been blared at them with such intensity, and all other messages censored for so long that they're probably having some kind of mass hysteria coupled with grief and fear.

Not exactly, but close.

When the elder Kim died informers ratted on people who didn't show "enough grief" and they ended up in labor camps. People remember that and are making sure to seem adequately mournful.

It's a very common practice in Asia that you squat. It must feel better than standing, or using a chair is a sign of laziness or something? Maybe someone can chime in on why this is so common over there.

I don't remember the exact details, but I remember reading a story about how when the Communist party would meet in Russia, the entire room would stand and applaud someone - might have been Stalin, or whomever was the premier in later years. The point is, they'd all be standing there clapping nervously for 15 or 20 minutes or more because no one wanted to draw attention to themselves by being the first one to stop and sit down.

North Korea has to be one of the saddest countries in the world. A whole country either brainwashed or terrified into living like slaves. Makes me embarrassed of my species. I kind of hope this new prince turned king (there is nothing communist about this country) makes them all drink the kool-aid. Any worthwhile people must have long ago left or been killed.

I think you answered your own question. Castro might have been an improvement compared to the previous dictator, but he did not play ball with US corporations wanting to exploit his people. The US is willing to work with dictatorships far worse than Cuba as long as they play nice.

A little bit of time known as the Cuban Missile Crisis, the befriending and aiding of one of the worst tyrannical governments the world has ever seen (USSR) a mere 90 miles from our shores, and the whole murdering of the opposition for decades, might, and just maybe at that, have something to do with it too.

/I take it you don't know any older Cubans who remember their country before Castro
