There is that one commercial showing `present-day' Wendy. That's pretty terrifying.

But nothing will top the pure unadulterated evil that is The King. And don't tell me they got rid of him, I know he's just lurking in his bunker somewhere, planning his next move in the attempt to destroy the Earth.

I've never been inside a Burger King that didn't feel like total sadness and abject hopelessness. It's something corporate that permeates the entire restaurant -- employees' mood and demeanor, quality of food, decor -- everything. That creepy-ass mascot just puts it over the edge. I refuse to go in that place.

I don't normally eat a lot of fast food burgers, but a heavy driving schedule the last month put me in a drive-thru line more than usual, which means I had a chance to hit the roll-outs of both chains new products.

Tried the BK Chefs Choice burger with the 'new' fries last week. Tasted like a fairly standard backyard burger... was a tad dry as burgers go, and the smoky taste was more from the bacon. It was OK, but not a $7 combo meal OK. The fries? Nothing special. Didn't really notice much difference from the 'old' fries in taste and texture. Was not impressed overall.

Tried the new Dave's Burger as a single with the sea salt fries about a month ago. The burger was juicy as advertised, and the sandwich had a pretty pleasant, retro-diner taste to it - I recall thinking after a second bite that it was a tasty burger - it reminded me of a classic blue-plate special from the local coffee shop or diner. The fries were also a pleasant surprise; crispy and hot with a good salt smack to them, certainly tons better than the old grease sticks that Wendy's used to pass off as fries. For a non fast-foodie, I had to give Wendy's a nod - they certainly jumped ahead of BK and McD's in my consideration when a quick burger and fries is the food option du jour.

That said, I'd drive the extra 15 minutes to a Steak n Shake if we had one local... but so far, not so lucky.

Man, I thought it tasted like salt on a bun. Meh. Although we all know we can find a better burger at a local dive bar, Wendy's has really stepped up to the plate with the new burgers. They hadn't changed their menu in 65 years and McDonald's is so dominant now with their McCafe line.

I only wish Wendy's would bring back the best thing I have ever had at a fast food restaurant, the Wild Mountain Chicken Sandwich: "It starts with a hot & smoky southwestern pepper sauce, hickory smoked bacon, and Colby Jack. Made fresh on our Spicy Chicken Breast Fillet, with Wendy's own fiery blend of peppers and spices. It's a big bold taste that's unforgettable."

Wendy's burgers are sometimes cold before I can unwrap them and eat them. I have experienced this a 4 different locations. Also, there is something disgustingly satisfying about about a huge greasy messy Wopper w/cheese.

Yeah, I've noticed that the Wendy's near me stopped using foil. What's with that? Burger King uses paper, too, and McDonald's uses boxes. Where did all the foil wrappers go?

The last time I had wendy's was in kansas city around a year ago. I had been following my ex GF on her roadtrip from Phillidelphia to Los Angeles and desperately wanted a real meal besides nutrigrain bars. Not to mention that using diapers and water bottles gets really old after a while and I wanted a clean bathroom where I could relieve myself and take a quick bath.

Anyway, I stepped inside and went to the counter trying to order a delicious chicken sandwhich except I couldn't take my eyes off the most beautiful girl I have ever seen. There she was, sitting in a booth eating some fries and actually drawing a picture. An artist perhaps? Who knows but it was damn sexy and I literally had to use my hands to cover my expanding pants. I knew the only way I was going to get to talk to her was to get her alone. If this were mcdonalds I may have used the old "hide in the ballpit" trick but this time I needed to be extra sneaky. My first thoughts were how to get her mom distracted

...hold on I'll finish this later there's someone at the door

I get depressed by Burger King too, haven't been in one in years. Wendy's is pretty cheerful in comparison.

I'm surprised it took this long. I haven't been in a Burger King in the last 10 years that doesn't have burgers that reek of grease fire, fries that don't make me wonder if it's salt glued together with potato starch, and generally crappy service.

OK, you let me know when Burger King stops putting hydrogenated fats and HFCS in their buns and making fake onion rings, or has veggies as fresh as Wendy's.

I miss when you could still get a Wendy's junior bacon cheeseburger for $1. For me, value often trumps quality when it comes to the occasional fast food, so Wendy's usually ends up out of the equation.

That said, I have tried their new burgers and I was pleasantly surprised. Most people will pay for quality as long as it's reasonable. Wendy's seems to be figuring that out now, with burger patties you can actually taste, bacon that isn't a miserable shrunken mess, and fries that aren't soggy and cold the minute you get them.

2011-12-22 02:50:14 PM
Wendy's gets my order right. The local Burger King gets it wrong every other time. Really, the food isn't all that great either way, but given a choice I'll go to the one that screws up less.

I bet Five Guys goes great with PBR and Residents albums.

Wendys fries leave a bitter aftertaste in my mouth for some reason, which is too bad because of all the chains around here their friends are pretty good except for that aftertaste.

2011-12-22 02:51:38 PM
I don't if it always been this way, but it feels as if Burger King's burgers have been shrunk or something. I couldn't believe my eyes when I looked at my miserable piece of hamburger that was so very tiny.

I seriously haven't been to a burger king in probably 8 years. I completely agree with others' descriptions of every burger king being a cesspool. It's the Waffle House of the burger world. Ever since I heard they literally paint the burger I haven't wanted one. Their fries are awful. Their drinks are watered down. I mean how do you fark up a Coke? They do.

I'm honestly surprised they are still in business.

My town of just under 30,000 no longer has a Burger King. Closed about 7 years ago. The guy's lease was up and BK Corporate told him if he wanted to continue to be a Burger King, he would have to remodel or rebuild to modern BK standards. Guy chose to close. I haven't had BK since. Also, once I was with my dad there and he threw a big embarassing fit because they didn't get his burger right.

I'm not a burger king fan normally, but cold whoppers are second only to cold pizza as a too-lazy-to-cook-a-real-breakfast-breakfast. Better cold than hot.

Except Five Guys costs double and has the same prices as Claim Jumper and Red Robin, who have superior burger offerings than any of the fast food joints.

My main problem with Burger King is they don't have the standard double cheeseburger value meal. They have the Texas Double Whopper, but not just a regular Double Whopper.

/Yeah, yeah I know.

The problem with fast food restaurant reviews is the quality of the food varies wildly depending on how long they've left it sitting in the warmer after cooking. So does cashier surliness vary, with the exception of Chick-Fil-A -- they seem to go far in drilling a corporate customer service style into those folks.
